Deutéronome 9
1 Ecoute, Israël: tu vas traverser aujourd'hui le Jourdain, pour prendre le territoire de grandes nations beaucoup plus fortes que toi, et pour prendre de grandes villes, dont les remparts montent jusqu'au ciel,
Hear, O Israel: Thou goest this day across Jordan to inherit nations greater and stronger than yourselves, cities great and walled up to heaven;
2 Pour supplanter un peuple grand et nombreux, et de haute taille, les fils d'Enac, que tu connais; car, tu sais le proverbe: Qui résistera en face aux fils d'Enac?
a people great and many and tall, the sons of Enac, whom thou knowest, and concerning whom thou hast heard [say], Who can stand before the children of Enac?
3 Et tu vas savoir que le Seigneur ton Dieu lui-même marchera à ta tête; ton Dieu est un feu consumant; c'est lui qui les exterminera, c'est lui qui les chassera loin de ta face, et il les détruira promptement, comme te l'a dit le Seigneur.
And thou shalt know to-day, that the Lord thy God he shall go before thy face: he is a consuming fire; he shall destroy them, and he shall turn them back before thee, and shall destroy them quickly, as the Lord said to thee.
4 Garde-toi de dire en ton cœur, tandis que le Seigneur ton Dieu dissipera ces nations devant toi: C'est à cause de ma justice que le Seigneur m'a conduit, pour me donner en héritage cette terre fortunée. mais c'est à cause de l'iniquité de ces nations que le Seigneur détruira devant toi
Speak not in thine heart, when the Lord thy God has destroyed these nations before thy face, saying, For my righteousness the Lord brought me in to inherit this good land.
5 Non, ce n'est pas à cause de ta justice, ce n'est pas à cause de la sainteté de ton cœur que tu vas avoir leur terre pour héritage, mais c'est à cause de l'iniquité de ces nations que le Seigneur détruira devant toi, afin d'établir l'alliance que le Seigneur a jurée avec nos pères: Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.
Not for thy righteousness, nor for the holiness of thy heart, dost thou go in to inherit their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord will destroy them from before thee, and that he may establish the covenant, which the Lord sware to our fathers, to Abraam, and to Isaac, and to Jacob.
6 Tu connaîtras aujourd'hui que ce n'est point à cause de ta justice que le Seigneur ton Dieu te donne en héritage cette terre fortunée, à toi, peuple revêche que tu es.
And thou shalt know to-day, that [it is] not for thy righteousnesses the Lord thy God gives thee this good land to inherit, for thou art a stiff-necked people.
7 Souviens-toi, n'oublie point combien tu as irrité le Seigneur ton Dieu dans le désert, depuis le jour où vous êtes sortis d'Egypte, jusqu'à votre arrivée au lieu ou nous sommes; vous avez persévéré dans l'insoumission au Seigneur.
Remember, forget not, how much thou provokedst the Lord thy God in the wilderness: from the day that ye came forth out of Egypt, even till ye came into this place, ye continued to be disobedient toward the Lord.
8 En Horeb, vous avez irrité le Seigneur, et il s'est courroucé contre vous, au point de vouloir vous exterminer,
Also in Choreb ye provoked the Lord, and the Lord was angry with you to destroy you;
9 Comme j'étais monté sur la montagne pour prendre les tables de pierre, les tables de l'alliance que le Seigneur a faite avec vous; j'y restai quarante jours et quarante nuits, et je n'y mangeai pas de pain, et je n'y bus pas d'eau.
when I went up into the mountain to receive the tables of stone, the tables of the covenant, which the Lord made with you, and I was in the mountain forty days and forty nights, I ate no bread and drank no water.
10 Et Dieu me donna les deux tables de pierre, écrites du doigt du Seigneur; toutes les paroles que le Seigneur avait dites devant vous sur la montagne, au jour de l'Eglise, y étaient écrites.
And the Lord gave me the two tables of stone written with the finger of God, and on them there had been written all the words which the Lord spoke to you in the mountain in the day of the assembly.
11 Le Seigneur me donna donc les deux tables de pierre, les tables de l'alliance, après quarante jours et quarante nuits.
And it came to pass after forty days and forty nights, the Lord gave me the two tables of stone, the tables of the covenant.
12 Et le Seigneur me dit: Lève-toi, et descends bien vite d'ici; car ton peuple, que tu as fait sortir d'Egypte, s'est égaré. Ils se sont promptement écartés de la voie que je leur ai marquée et ils se sont fait une image en fonte.
And the Lord said to me, Arise, go down quickly from hence, for thy people whom thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt have transgressed; they have gone aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them, and have made themselves a molten image.
13 Et le Seigneur me dit: Je te l'ai répété plus d'une fois: je connais, j'ai vu ce peuple; c'est un peuple revêche.
And the Lord spoke to me, saying, I have spoken to thee once and again, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiff-necked people.
14 Laisse-moi donc les détruire, et j'effacerai leur nom sous le ciel, et je te mettrai à la tête d'une nation grande et forte, plus nombreuse que celle-ci.
And now suffer me utterly to destroy them, and I will blot out their name from under heaven, and will make of thee a nation great and strong, and more numerous than this.
15 Je partis donc; je descendis de la montagne. Or, la montagne était enflammée, et lançait du feu jusqu'au ciel, et je tenais dans mes deux mains les deux tables du témoignage.
And I turned and went down from the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire to heaven; and the two tables of the testimonies [were] in my two hands.
16 Et, quand je vis que vous aviez péché devant le Seigneur notre Dieu, que vous vous étiez fait une image en fonte, que vous vous étiez écartés de la voie où le Seigneur vous avait prescrit de marcher,
And when I saw that ye had sinned against the Lord your God, and had made to yourselves a molten image, and had gone astray out of the way, which the Lord commanded you to keep;
17 Je saisis les deux tables, je les jetai de mes deux mains, et je les brisai devant vous;
then I took hold of the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before you.
18 Et je priai devant le Seigneur une seconde fois, quarante jours et quarante nuits comme la première, et je ne mangeai pas de pain, et je ne bus point d'eau, et je priai pour tous vos péchés, pour le mal que vous aviez fait devant le Seigneur Dieu en l'irritant ainsi.
And I made my petition before the Lord as also at the first forty days and forty nights: I ate no bread and drank no water, on account of all your sins which ye sinned in doing evil before the Lord God to provoke him.
19 Je suis encore effrayé du courroux, de la fureur que ressentait le Seigneur contre vous, au point de vouloir vous exterminer; or, en ce temps-là, le Seigneur m'exauça.
And I was greatly terrified because of the wrath and anger, because the Lord was provoked with you utterly to destroy you; yet the Lord hearkened to me at this time also.
20 Mais il était courroucé contre Aaron, au point de vouloir l'exterminer; et, en ce temps-là, je priai aussi pour Aaron.
And he was angry with Aaron to destroy him utterly, and I prayed for Aaron also at that time.
21 Et votre péché, le veau que tous aviez fabriqué, je le consumai dans le feu, je le pilai, après l'avoir battu et réduit en lames très-minces; je le réduisis en poudre, et je jetai cette poussière dans le torrent qui descend de la montagne.
And your sin which ye had made, [even] the calf, I took, and burnt it with fire, and pounded it and ground it down till it became fine; and it became like dust, and I cast the dust into the brook that descended from the mountain.
22 Ensuite, au lieu de l'embrasement, au lieu de la tentation, au lieu des sépulcres de la concupiscence, vous irritâtes encore le Seigneur.
Also in the burning, and in the temptation, and at the graves of lust, ye provoked the Lord.
23 Et lorsque le Seigneur vous fit sortir de Cadès-Barné, disant: Montez et prenez possession de la terre que je vous donne, vous fûtes encore indociles à la parole du Seigneur votre Dieu, vous n'eûtes point foi en lui, et vous n'obéîtes point à sa voix.
And when the Lord sent you forth from Cades Barne, saying, Go up and inherit the land which I give to you, then ye disobeyed the word of the Lord your God, and believed him not, and hearkened not to his voice.
24 Vous avez été désobéissants envers le Seigneur, à partir du jour où il s'est fait connaître à vous.
Ye were disobedient in the things relating to the Lord from the day in which he became known to you.
25 Et je priai devant le Seigneur quarante jours et quarante nuits, le même temps que la première fois, car le Seigneur menaçait de vous exterminer.
And I prayed before the Lord forty days and forty nights, the number that I prayed [before], for the Lord said that he would utterly destroy you.
26 Et je priai Dieu, et je dis: Seigneur, roi des dieux, n'exterminez pas votre peuple, votre héritage que vous avez racheté, et que vous avez fait sortir de l'Egypte par votre grande force, par votre main puissante et votre bras très-haut.
And I prayed to God, and said, O Lord, King of gods, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, whom thou didst redeem, whom thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt with thy great power, and with thy strong hand, and with thy high arm.
27 Souvenez-vous d'Abraham, d'Isaac et de Jacob, vos serviteurs, à qui vous avez juré par vous-même; n'attachez point vos regards sur l'endurcissement de ce peuple, sur ses impiétés, sur ses péchés.
Remember Abraam, and Isaac, and Jacob thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thyself: look not upon the hardness of heart of this people, and their impieties, and their sins.
28 Prenez garde que les habitants de la terre d'où vous l'avez fait sortir ne disent: C'est parce qu'il n'a pu les introduire dans la terre dont il leur avait parlé, c'est aussi parce qu'il les avait en haine, que le Seigneur les a conduits dans le désert afin de les faire périr.
Lest the inhabitants of the land whence thou broughtest us out speak, saying, Because the Lord could not bring them into the land of which he spoke to them, and because he hated them, has he brought them forth to slay them in the wilderness.
29 Ce peuple est votre peuple, votre héritage, vous l'avez fait sortir d'Egypte par votre grande force, votre main puissante et votre bras très-haut.
And these [are] thy people and thy portion, whom thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt with thy great strength, and with thy mighty hand, and with thy high arm.
