Daniel 1
1 En la troisième année du règne de Joakim, roi de Juda, Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, vint à Jérusalem, et il l'investit.
In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and laid siege against it;
2 Et le Seigneur lui livra le roi Joakim avec une partie des vases du temple de Dieu, et il emporta ces vases en la terre de Sennaar, où était le temple de son dieu, et il les déposa dans la maison du trésor de son dieu.
and the Lord gave into his hand Jehoiakim king of Judah, and a part of the vessels of the house of God, and he brought them into the land of Shinar, into the house of his gods, —and, the vessels, brought he into the treasure-house of his gods.
3 Et le roi dit à Asphanez, chef de ses eunuques, de lui amener quelques-uns des fils des captifs d'Israël de la race royale et des princes,
Then did the king give word to Ashpenaz, the chief of his eunuchs, —that he should bring in, of the sons of Israel, even of the seed royal, and of the nobles,
4 Jeunes gens sans infirmité, beaux de formes, initiés à toute sagesse, savants, doués de prudence et dignes d'habiter le palais en présence du roi, et il lui ordonna de les instruire dans la langue et les lettres des Chaldéens.
youths in whom was no blemish, but comely of countenance, and skilful in all wisdom, and possessed of knowledge, and able to impart instruction, and who had vigour in them, to stand in the palace of the king, —and that they should be taught the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
5 Et le roi ordonna que chaque jour on les nourrit durant trois ans des mets de sa table royale, et du vin dont lui-même buvait, et qu'ensuite ils se tinssent en présence du roi.
And the king appointed them the provision of each day upon its day, out of the delicacies of the king and out of the wine which he drank, and so to let them grow three years, —and, at the end thereof, that they should stand before the king.
6 Et parmi eux se trouvèrent des fils de Juda, Daniel, Ananias, Azarias et Misaël.
Now there were, among them, out of the sons of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah;
7 Et le chef des eunuques leur donna des noms: il appela Daniel Baltasar, et Ananias Sidrach, et Misaël Misach, et Azarias Abdénago.
and the ruler of the eunuchs gave them names, —yea he gave to Daniel the name of Belteshazzar, and to Hananiah of Shadrach, and to Mishael of Meshach, and to Azariah of Abed-nego.
8 Mais Daniel eut à cœur de ne point se souiller des mets de la table du roi, ni du vin dont il faisait usage, et il pria le chef des eunuques de lui permettre de ne s'en point souiller.
But Daniel laid it upon his heart, that he would not defile himself with the delicacies of the king, nor with the wine which he drank, —therefore sought he of the ruler of the eunuchs, that he might not defile himself.
9 Et Dieu accorda que Daniel obtînt les bonnes grâces et la compassion du chef des eunuques.
But, although God had brought Daniel into lovingkindness and tender compassion, before the ruler of the eunuchs,
10 Et le chef des eunuques dit à Daniel: J'ai peur que le roi, mon maître, après m'avoir donné des ordres pour vos aliments et votre breuvage, ne vous voie peut-être mauvais visage, en comparaison des jeunes gens de votre âge; et vous me feriez condamner à mort par le roi.
yet said the ruler of the eunuchs unto Daniel, I do fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your food and your drink, —for why should he see your faces more sad than those of the youths of your own age? so should ye bring me under the penalty of mine own head unto the king.
11 Et Daniel dit à Amelsad, à qui le chef des eunuques avait confié la garde de Daniel, d'Ananias, de Misaël et d'Azarias:
Then said Daniel, unto the overseer whom the ruler of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
12 Éprouve tes serviteurs pendant dix jours, et fais nous donner quelques graines que nous mangerons; et nous boirons de l'eau.
I pray thee—prove thy servants, ten days, —and let them give us vegetable food, that we may eat, and water that we may drink:
13 Puis regarde notre visage et le visage des jeunes gens qui se seront nourris de la table du roi; et selon ce que tu auras vu, agis à l'égard de tes serviteurs.
then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenances of the youths who have been eating the delicacies of the king, —and, as thou shalt see, deal thou with thy servants.
14 Et il les exauça, et il les éprouva pendant dix jours.
So then he hearkened unto them, according to this word, —and proved them ten days;
15 Et au bout des dix jours il fut reconnu qu'ils avaient le visage meilleur et les chairs plus fermes que les jeunes gens nourris de la table du roi.
and, at the end of ten days, their countenances appeared more comely, and fatter in flesh, —than any of the youths who had been eating the delicacies of the king.
16 Alors Amelsad prit pour lui leurs mets et leur vin, et il leur donna des graines.
Thus it came about that the overseer continued taking away their delicacies, and the wine appointed them to drink, —and kept on giving them vegetable food.
17 Et Dieu doua ces quatre jeunes gens de l'intelligence et du savoir, dans tous les exercices; de la sagesse et des lettres; et Daniel sut interpréter les visions et les songes.
And, as for these four youths, God, gave them, knowledge and skill, in all learning and wisdom, —and, Daniel, had discernment, in all visions and dreams.
18 Et à la fin des jours que le roi avait fixés pour qu'on les lui amenât, le chef des eunuques les introduisit devant Nabuchodonosor.
Now, at the end of the days after which the king had given word to bring them in, then did the ruler of the eunuchs bring them in, before Nebuchadnezzar.
19 Et le roi leur parla, et, parmi tous ces jeunes gens, il ne s'en trouva point de comparables à Daniel, Ananias, Misaël et Azarias; et ils demeurèrent en présence du roi.
So then the king, spake with them, and there was not found, from among them all, one like unto Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, —therefore stood they before the king;
20 Et dans toutes les questions de sagesse et de science sur lesquelles le roi les interrogea, il les reconnut dix fois plus habiles que les devins et les mages qui étaient en tout son royaume.
and, in any matter of wisdom and discernment as to which the king, enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the sacred scribes—the magicians, who were in all his realm.
21 Et Daniel vécut ainsi jusqu'à la première année du règne de Cyrus.
Now Daniel continued, until the first year of Cyrus the king.
