Daniel 6
1 Et il plut à Darius d'instituer cent vingt satrapes pour être en tout son royaume;
It seemed good to Darius, and he appointed over the kingdom a hundred and twenty governors to be over his whole kingdom.
2 Et au-dessus d'eux, trois gouverneurs, dont l'un fut Daniel, pour que les satrapes leur rendissent compte, et que lui-même n'en fût pas surchargé.
And three princes over them, of whom Daniel was one: that the governors might give an account to them, and the king might have no trouble.
3 Et Daniel fut au-dessus d'eux, parce qu'il y avait en lui un esprit supérieur, et le roi le mit à la tête de tout son royaume.
And Daniel excelled all the princes, and governors: because a greater spirit of God was in him.
4 Or les autres gouverneurs et les satrapes s'efforcèrent de trouver un sujet d'accusation contre Daniel, et ils ne purent trouver contre lui ni grief, ni délit, ni soupçon, parce qu'il était fidèle.
And the king thought to set him over all the kingdom: whereupon the princes, and the governors sought to find occasion against Daniel with regard to the king: and they could find no cause, nor suspicion, because he was faithful, and no fault, nor suspicion was found in him.
5 Et les gouverneurs se dirent: Nous ne trouverons pas de sujet d'accusation contre Daniel, sinon à cause des lois de son Dieu.
Then these men said: We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, unless perhaps concerning the law of his God.
6 Alors les gouverneurs et les satrapes comparurent devant le roi, et lui dirent: Ô roi Darius, vis à jamais!
Then the princes, and the governors craftily suggested to the king, and spoke thus unto him: King Darius, live for ever:
7 Tous les officiers de ton royaume, généraux et satrapes, magistrats et intendants, ont tenu conseil pour qu'il fût rendu un édit royal, et formellement ordonné que tout homme qui durant trente jours fera une demande soit à un dieu, soit à un homme autre que le roi, sera jeté dans la fosse aux lions.
All the princes of the kingdom, the magistrates, and governors, the senators, and judges have consulted together, that an imperial decree, and an edict be published: That whosoever shall ask any petition of any god, or man, for thirty days, but of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions.
8 Maintenant, ô roi, rends l'édit, et publie-le, afin que rien ne soit changé à ce qu'ont résolu les Perses et les Mèdes.
Now, therefore, O king, confirm the sentence, and sign the decree: that what is decreed by the Medes and Persians may not be altered, nor any man be allowed to transgress it.
9 Et le roi Darius fit publier l'édit.
So king Darius set forth the decree, and established it.
10 Or Daniel, aussitôt qu'il sut ce que prescrivait l'édit, entra dans sa maison, à l'étage supérieur, les fenêtres ouvertes; tourné vers Jérusalem, trois fois par jour il se mit à genoux, priant son Dieu, et lui rendant grâces, comme il avait coutume de le faire auparavant.
Now when Daniel knew this, that is to say, that the law was made, he went into his house: and opening the windows in his upper chamber towards Jerusalem, he knelt down three times a day, and adored, and gave thanks before his God, as he had been accustomed to do before.
11 Cependant ces hommes l'épièrent, et ils surprirent Daniel rendant grâces à son Dieu et lui faisant sa prière.
Wherefore those men carefully watching him, found Daniel praying and making supplication to his God.
12 Et s'approchant du roi, ils lui dirent: Ô roi, n'as-tu point rendu cet édit, que tout homme qui, durant trente jours, fera une demande à un dieu ou à un homme autre que le roi, soit jeté dans la fosse aux lions? Et le roi répondit: Ce que vous dites est véritable, et l'édit des Perses et des Mèdes ne sera pas violé.
And they came and spoke to the king concerning the edict: O king, hast thou not decreed, that every man that should make a request to any of the gods, or men, for thirty days, but to thyself, O king, should be cast into the den of the lions? And the king answered them, saying: The word is true according to the decree of the Medes and Persians, which it is not lawful to violate.
13 Et ils reprirent, disant au roi: Daniel, l'un des fils des captifs de la Judée, ne s'est point soumis à ton édit, et trois fois par jour il demande à son Dieu ce qu'il veut lui demander.
Then they answered, and said before the king: Daniel, who is of the children of the captivity of Juda, hath not regarded thy law, nor the decree that thou hast made: but three times a day he maketh his prayer.
14 Aussitôt que le roi eut oui ces paroles, il en fut fort contristé, et il fut combattu par le désir de sauver Daniel, et jusqu'au soir il fut combattu par le désir de le sauver.
Now when the king had heard these words, he was very much grieved, and in behalf of Daniel he set his heart to deliver him and even till sunset he laboured to save him.
15 Mais ces hommes dirent à Darius: Sache, ô roi, qu'il est réglé chez les Mèdes et les Perses que nul changement ne peut être fait à un édit, à un décret du roi.
But those men perceiving the king’s design, said to him: Know thou, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, that no decree which the king hath made, may be altered.
16 Et le roi donna ses ordres, et l'on emmena Daniel, et on le jeta dans la fosse aux lions, et le roi dit à Daniel: Ton Dieu que tu sers avec constance, lui-même te délivrera.
Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of the lions. And the king said to Daniel: Thy God, whom thou always servest, he will deliver thee.
17 Et l'on apporta une pierre, et on la posa sur l'ouverture de la fosse, et le roi la scella de son anneau et de l'anneau de ses grands, afin que rien concernant Daniel ne fût changé.
And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den: which the king sealed with his own ring, and with the ring of his nobles, that nothing should be done against Daniel.
18 Et le roi rentra dans son palais; mais il se coucha sans avoir soupé; on ne lui présenta point d'aliments, et le sommeil s'éloigna de lui. Et Dieu ferma la gueule des lions, et ils ne firent aucun mal à Daniel.
And the king went away to his house and laid himself down without taking supper, and meat was not set before him, and even sleep departed from him.
19 Et le roi se leva de grand matin, dès les premières lueurs du jour, et il alla en toute hâte à la fosse aux lions.
Then the king rising very early in the morning, went in haste to the lions’ den:
20 Et, quand il fut près de la fosse, il cria à haute voix: Daniel, serviteur du Dieu vivant, ton Dieu, que tu sers avec constance, a-t-il pu te sauver de la gueule des lions?
And coming near to the den, cried with a lamentable voice to Daniel, and said to him: Daniel, servant of the living God, hath thy God, whom thou servest always, been able, thinkest thou, to deliver thee from the lions?
21 Et Daniel dit à Darius: Roi, vis à jamais
And Daniel answering the king, said: O king, live for ever:
22 Mon Dieu m'a envoyé son ange, et il a fermé la gueule des lions, et ils ne m'ont fait aucun mal, parce qu'à ses yeux j'ai été trouvé juste, et qu'à ton égard, ô roi, je n'ai fait aucune offense.
My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut up the mouths of the lions, and they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him justice hath been found in me: yea and before thee, O king, I have done no offence.
23 À ces mots le roi fut extrêmement réjoui, et il ordonna de retirer Daniel de la fosse, et il fut trouvé sain et sauf, parce qu'il avait mis sa confiance en Dieu.
Then was the king exceeding glad for him, and he commanded that Daniel should be taken out of the den: and Daniel was taken out of the den, and no hurt was found in him, because he believed in his God.
24 Et le roi donna ses ordres, et l'on amena les hommes qui avaient accusé Daniel, et on les jeta dans la fosse aux lions, eux, leurs fils et leurs femmes; et avant qu'ils eussent touché le fond de la fosse, les lions s'en emparèrent et leur broyèrent tous les os.
And by the king’s commandment, those men were brought that bad accused Daniel: and they were cast into the lions’ den, they and their children, and their wives: and they did not reach the bottom of the den, before the lions caught them, and broke all their bones in pieces.
25 Alors le roi Darius écrivit à tous les peuples, aux tribus, aux hommes de toutes langues, à tous les habitants de la terre: Que la paix se multiplie parmi vous!
Then king Darius wrote to all people, tribes, and languages, dwelling in the whole earth: PEACE be multiplied unto you.
26 Le présent édit est rendu par moi pour toutes les principautés de mon royaume, afin que chacun soit plein de crainte et de tremblement devant la force du Dieu de Daniel; car lui seul est le Dieu vivant, et il demeure dans tous les siècles, et son royaume ne périra jamais, et son règne durera jusqu'à la fin des temps.
It is decreed by me, that in all my empire and my kingdom all men dread and fear the God of Daniel. For he is the living and eternal God for ever: and his kingdom shall not be destroyed, and his power shall be for ever.
27 Il protège et il sauve, et il fait des signes et des miracles dans le ciel et sur la terre; c'est lui qui a tiré Daniel de la griffe des lions.
He is the deliverer, and saviour, doing signs and wonders in heaven, and in earth: who hath delivered Daniel out of the lions’ den.
28 Et Daniel vécut plein de prospérité, sous le règne de Darius et sous le règne de Cyrus le Perse.
Now Daniel continued unto the reign of Darius, and the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
