Daniel 5
1 Le roi Baltasar offrit un magnifique repas à ses grands au nombre de mille, et devant les mille convives il y avait du vin.
Belshazzar the king made a great feast for a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.
2 Et Balthasar buvait, et dans l'ivresse du vin il dit que l'on apportât les vases d'or et d'argent enlevés par Nabuchodonosor son père au temple de Jérusalem, et que le roi et ses grands, ses concubines et ses femmes, bussent dans ces vases.
Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem, that the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, might drink from there.
3 Et l'on apporta les vases d'or et d'argent que l'on avait rapportés du temple de Jérusalem, et le roi et ses grands, ses concubines et ses femmes burent dans ces vases.
Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem. And the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, drank from them.
4 Ils burent du vin, et ils louèrent leurs dieux d'or et d'argent, d'airain, de fer, de pierre et de bois.
They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.
5 Au même instant apparurent des doigts d'homme, et ils écrivirent devant le luminaire sur l'enduit du mur du palais du roi, et le roi suivait du regard le mouvement des phalanges de la main qui écrivait.
In the same hour the fingers of a man's hand came forth, and wrote opposite the lampstand upon the plaster of the wall of the king's palace. And the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.
6 Alors le roi changea de visage, et ses pensées le troublèrent, et la ceinture de ses reins se dénoua, ses genoux s'entre-choquèrent.
Then the king's countenance was changed in him, and his thoughts troubled him. And the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.
7 Et le roi, criant de toute sa force, ordonna d'amener les mages, les Chaldéens et les sorciers. Et il dit aux sages de Babylone: Celui qui lira ce qui est écrit, et qui m'en fera connaître l'interprétation, sera revêtu de pourpre, et il aura autour du cou un collier d'or, et dans mon royaume il commandera le troisième après moi.
The king cried aloud to bring in the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spoke and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whoever shall read this writing, and show me the interpretation of it, shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.
8 Et tous les sages du roi s'avancèrent, et ils ne purent lire ce qui était écrit ni en donner au roi l'interprétation.
Then all the king's wise men came in, but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation.
9 Et le roi Baltasar fut troublé, et il changea de visage, et ses grands furent troublés comme lui.
Then king Belshazzar was greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were perplexed.
10 Et la reine entra dans la salle du festin, et elle dit: Roi, vis à jamais, que tes pensées ne se troublent pas, et ne change pas de visage!
Now the queen came into the banquet house because of the words of the king and his lords. The queen spoke and said, O king, live forever. Let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed.
11 Il est dans ton royaume un homme en qui est l'Esprit de Dieu; et du temps de ton père la vigilance et la sagesse furent trouvées en lui, et le roi Nabuchodonosor ton père le fit chef des devins, des mages, des Chaldéens et des sorciers,
There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods. And in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him. And the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made him master of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and soothsayers,
12 Parce que l'esprit était supérieur en lui, et que la prudence et la sagesse étaient en lui pour interpréter les songes, pour répondre aux questions difficiles, pour dénouer les choses inextricables; c'est Daniel, et ton père l'appelait Baltasar; maintenant donc, qu'on l'appelle, et il te fera connaître son interprétation.
inasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and showing of dark sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will show the interpretation.
13 Alors Daniel fut introduit devant le roi, et le roi dit à Daniel: Es-tu Daniel, l'un des fils des captifs de la Judée qu'a transportés mon père?
Then Daniel was brought in before the king. The king spoke and said to Daniel, Are thou that Daniel, who are of the sons of the captivity of Judah, whom my father the king brought out of Judah?
14 J'ai oui dire que l'Esprit de Dieu est en toi, et que la vigilance, l'intelligence et une sagesse supérieure ont été trouvées en toi.
I have heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in thee.
15 Or maintenant les sages, les mages, les sorciers sont venus devant moi, pour lire cette écriture, et m'en faire connaître l'interprétation; et ils n'ont pu me rien dire.
And now the wise men, the enchanters, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known to me the interpretation of it, but they could not show the interpretation of the thing.
16 Et moi, j'ai appris que tu peux interpréter les jugements; si donc tu peux lire cette écriture et me l'interpréter, tu seras revêtu de pourpre, tu auras un collier d'or autour du cou, et tu commanderas dans mon royaume, le troisième après moi.
But I have heard of thee, that thou can give interpretations, and dissolve doubts. Now if thou can read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation of it, thou shall be clothed with purple, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.
17 Et Daniel dit en présence du roi: Que tes présents te restent, donne à un autre les dons de ton palais; pour moi, je te lirai ce qui est écrit, et je t'en ferai connaître l'interprétation.
Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another. Nevertheless I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation.
18 Roi, le Dieu très-haut a donné à Nabuchodonosor ton père la royauté et la magnificence, les honneurs et la gloire.
O thou king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father the kingdom and greatness and glory and majesty.
19 Et devant la grandeur que Dieu lui avait donnée, les peuples, les tribus, les hommes de toutes langues étaient tremblants et pleins de crainte devant son visage; ceux d'entre eux qu'il voulait tuer, il les tuait; ceux qu'il voulait frapper, il les frappait; ceux qu'il voulait glorifier, il les glorifiait; et ceux qu'il voulait humilier, il les humiliait.
And because of the greatness that he gave him, all the peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. Whom he wanted, he killed, and whom he wanted, he kept alive, and whom he wanted, he raised up, and whom he wanted, he put down.
20 Et quand son cœur se fut élevé, et que son esprit se fut endurci dans son orgueil, il fut précipité du trône, et ses honneurs lui furent enlevés.
But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne. And they took his glory from him,
21 Et il fut chassé loin des hommes, et un cœur lui fut donné comme aux bêtes, et sa demeure fut parmi les ânes sauvages; on lui donna sa part de fourrage comme à un bœuf, et son corps fut baigné par la rosée du ciel, jusqu'à ce qu'il eût reconnu que le Dieu très-haut est le maître du royaume des hommes, et qu'il le donne à qui bon lui semble.
and he was driven from the sons of men. And his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. He was fed with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, until he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and that he sets up over it whomever he will.
22 Et toi donc, son fils Baltasar, tu n'as pas non plus humilié ton cœur devant Dieu: ne sais-tu point toutes ces choses?
And thou his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled thy heart, though thou knew all this,
23 Tu t'es enorgueilli contre le Seigneur Dieu du ciel, et l'on a apporté devant toi les vases de son temple; et toi et tes grands, tes concubines et tes femmes, vous avez bu du vin dans ces vases; et tu as loué les dieux d'or et d'argent, d'airain, de fer, de pierre et de bois, qui ne voient, n'entendent ni ne comprennent; et le Dieu qui tient en sa main ton souffle et toutes tes voies, tu ne l'as point glorifié.
but have lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven. And they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy lords, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine from them. And thou have praised the gods of silver and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor know. And the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, thou have not glorified.
24 C'est pourquoi il a envoyé de devant lui les doigts de cette main, et lui a ordonné de tracer cette inscription.
Then the part of the hand was sent from before him, and this writing was inscribed.
25 Or, cette inscription, la voici: Mané, Thécel, Pharès.
And this is the writing that was inscribed: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.
26 Et voici l'interprétation de ces paroles: Mané, Dieu a mesuré ton règne, et en a marqué la fin.
This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE, God has numbered thy kingdom, and brought it to an end.
27 Thécel, ta royauté a été placée sur la balance, et elle a été trouvée trop légère.
TEKEL, thou are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting.
28 Pharès, ton royaume a été divisé, et donné aux Mèdes et aux Perses.
PERES, thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.
29 Et Baltasar donna ses ordres: et l'on revêtit Daniel de pourpre, et on lui mit autour du cou un collier d'or, et le roi lui-même le proclama le troisième chef du royaume.
Then Belshazzar commanded, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.
30 Et cette même nuit fut tué Baltasar, le roi chaldéen.
In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean King was slain.
31 Et le Mède Darius reçut le gouvernement de son royaume, à l'âge de soixante-deux ans.
And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.
