2 Samuel 3

1 Et la guerre se prolongea entre la maison de David et celle de Saül. Avec le temps la première se fortifia, l'autre s'affaiblit.

And the war between the house of Saul and the house of David was prolonged, —and, David, waxed stronger and stronger, and, the house of Saul, became weaker and weaker.

2 Et des fils naquirent à David en Hébron; son premier-né fut Amnon, fils d'Achinoam la Jezraélite;

And there were born unto David, sons, in Hebron, —and it came to press that—His firstborn was Amnon, by Ahinoam, the Jezreelitess;

3 Le second fut Daluia, fils d'Abigall du Carmel; le troisième, Absalon, fils de Mucha, fille de Tholmi, roi de Gessir;

And his second Chileab, by Abigail, wife of Nabal the Carmelite, And the third Absolom, son of Maachah, daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur;

4 Le quatrième, Ornia, fils d'Agith; le cinquième, Saphatia, fils d'Abital,

And the fourth Adonijah, son of Higgith, —And the fifth Shephatiah, son of Abital;

5 Et le sixième, Jethéraam, fils d'Egal, femme de David; tels furent les fils qui naquirent à David en Hébron.

And the sixth Ithream, by Eglah wife of David. These, were born unto David, in Hebron.

6 Pendant la guerre entre la maison de Saül et la maison de David, Abner commandait les forces de la maison de Saül.

And it came to pass, while the war continued between the house of Saul and the house of David, that, Abner, shewed himself courageous for the house of Saul.

7 Or, Respha, fille de Jol, avait été concubine de Saül. Et Isboseth, fils de Saül, dit à Abner: Pourquoi as-tu commerce avec la concubine de mon père?

Now, Saul, had a concubine, whose name, was Rizpah daughter of Aiah, —and [Ish-bosheth] said unto Abner, Why, wentest thou in, unto my father’s concubine?

8 Abner ressentit un grand courroux, à cause de cette parole d'Isboseth, et il lui dit: Est-ce que je suis une tête de chien? J'ai eu compassion de la maison de Saül ton père, et de ses frères, et de ses proches; je n'ai point passé au camp de David, et tu m'accuses, et tu me trouves en faute au sujet d'une femme?

And it provoked Abner greatly, on account of the words of Ish-bosheth, and he said—Am I, the head of the dogs, that pertain unto Judah? To-day, would I deal in lovingkindness with the house of Saul thy father, towards his brethren, and towards his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, —and yet thou hast charged upon me the transgression of the woman, today.

9 Que le Seigneur punisse Abner, et qu'il le punisse encore, si, ce jour même, je n'agis pas selon la promesse que le Seigneur a faite à David,

So, may God do unto Abner, and, so, may he add to him, —if, as Yahweh hath sworn unto David, even so, I deal not with him;

10 D'enlever la royauté à la maison de Saül, et d'élever le trône de David sur Israël et sur Juda, depuis Dan jusqu'à Bersabée.

by turning over the kingdom from the house of Saul, —and establishing the throne of David, over Israel and over Judah, from Dan, even unto Beer-sheba.

11 Isboseth n'eut pas la force de répondre un mot à Abner, tant il le craignait.

And he could no further answer Abner, a word, —because he feared him.

12 Et Abner envoya des messagers à David en Thélam, où il se trouvait alors, et il lui dit: Fais alliance avec moi, et voilà que ma main est à toi, pour te ramener toute la maison d'Israël.

So Abner sent messengers unto David, on the spot, saying—Whose, is the land? Saying [also] —Solemnise thy covenant with me; and lo! my hand, shall be with thee, to bring round unto thee, all Israel.

13 Et David dit: Je ferai volontiers; alliance avec toi, sauf une condition que je te demande; la voici: Tu ne verras point ma face, si tu ne m'amènes Michol, fille de Saül, lorsque tu reviendras pour voir ma face.

And he said—Good! I, will solemnise with thee a covenant, —but, one thing, must I ask of thee, saying—Thou shalt not see my face, except thou have brought in Michal, Saul’s daughter, when thou comest to see my face.

14 Et David envoya des messagers à Isboseth, fils de Saül, disant: Rends-moi ma femme Michol, que j'ai épousée quand j'eus pris cent prépuces de Philistins.

And David sent messengers unto Ish-bosheth son of Saul, saying, —Give up my wife, Michal, whom I espoused to myself, for a hundred foreskins of Philistines.

15 Isboseth l'envoya reprendre à son mari Phaltiel.

So Ish-bosheth sent and took her from her husband, —from Paltiel, son of Laish.

16 Et son mari la suivit, en pleurant, jusqu'à Baracira, où Abner lui dit: Va-t'en, retourne chez toi. Alors, il s'en retourna.

And her husband went along with her, weeping as he went behind her, as far as Behurim, —when Abner said unto him—Go, return. And he returned.

17 Abner dit ensuite aux anciens d'Israël: Précédemment, vous désiriez que David régnât sur vous.

Then had Abner, speech, with the elders of Israel, saying, —In times past, ye were seeking David, to be king over you.

18 Faites-le donc roi, car le Seigneur a dit de David: Par la main de mon serviteur David, je délivrerai Israël des mains des Philistins et de tous ses ennemis.

Now, therefore, act, —for Yahweh, spake unto David, saying, By the hand of David my servant, will I save my people Israel, out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.

19 Abner parla de même aux fils de Benjamin, et il vint à Hébron dire à David tout ce qui était agréable à Israël et à la maison de Benjamin.

And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin, —and Abner also went to speak in the ears of David, in Hebron, all that was pleasing in the eyes of Israel, and in the eyes of all the house of Benjamin.

20 Abner arriva chez David, à Hébron, accompagné de vingt hommes, et David leur fit un festin.

So, when Abner came in unto David, in Hebron, and, with him, twenty men, David made, for Abner, and for the men who were with him, a banquet.

21 Et Abner dit à David: Je vais me mettre en campagne; je rassemblerai tout Israël en faveur du roi mon maître, et je ferai alliance avec le peuple, et tu seras roi de tous ceux sur qui en ton âme tu désires régner. Après cela, David congédia Abner, qui se retira en paix.

Then said Abner unto David—I will verily arise and go, and gather together unto my lord the king, all Israel—that they may solemnise with thee a covenant, so shalt thou reign over all that thy soul desireth. And David let Abner go, and he departed in peace.

22 A ce moment, les serviteurs de David avec Joab revenaient d'une incursion, et ils rapportaient de nombreuses dépouilles; Abner, quittant Hébron, parce que David l'avait congédié, s'en allait en paix.

And lo! the servants of David, and Joab, came in from a raid, and, great spoil, brought they in with them; but, Abner, was not with David in Hebron, for he had let him go, and he had departed in peace.

23 Quand Joab et toute sa troupe survinrent, on alla dire à Joab: Abner, fils de Ner, est venu chez David, et celui-ci l'a congédié, et il est parti en paix.

When, Joab, and all the host that was with him, had come in, then told they Joab, saying, Abner son of Ner hath been in unto the king, and he hath let him go, and he hath departed in peace.

24 Et Joab, entrant auprès du roi, lui dit: Pourquoi as-tu fait cela? Voilà qu'Abner t'est venu trouver, et tu l'as congédié, et il est parti en paix?

Then Joab came in unto the king, and said—What hast thou done? Lo! Abner came in unto thee. Wherefore is it that thou didst let him go, so that he is clean departed?

25 Ne connais-tu pas la méchanceté d'Abner, fils de Ner; ne sais-tu pas qu'il est arrivé pour te tromper, pour épier tes allées et venues, et s'informer de toutes tes actions?

Thou knowest Abner son of Ner, that, to deceive thee, he came, —and to take knowledge of thy going out, and thy coming in, and to take knowledge of all that thou art doing.

26 Et Joab sortit, et il envoya après Abner des messagers qui le ramenèrent du puits de Seïram; mais David n'en sut rien.

And, when Joab had come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, and brought him back from the well of Sirah, —but, David, knew it not.

27 Abner revint donc à Hébron. Or, Joab le conduisit traîtreusement à l'écart près de la porte, sous prétexte de lui parler, et il le frappa au ventre; et Abner mourut en expiation du sang d'Asaël, frère de Joab.

So Abner returned to Hebron, and Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate, to speak with him quietly, —and then smote him there, in the belly, that he died, for the blood of Asahel the brother of Joab.

28 David ne tarda pas à l'apprendre, et il s'écria: Je suis innocent, et mon royaume est innocent à toujours, devant le Seigneur, du sang d'Abner, fils de Ner.

And, when David heard of it, after that, he said—Guiltless, am I and my kingdom before Yahweh, unto times age-abiding, —of the blood of Abner son of Ner.

29 Qu'il retombe sur la tête de Joab et sur toute la maison de son père; qu'il y ait toujours en sa famille des malsains, des lépreux, des infirmes s'appuyant sur un bâton, des hommes périssant par l'épée, et d'autres manquant de pain.

Let it be hurled upon the head of Joab, and against all his father’s house, —and let there not fail from the house of Joab—one that hath an issue, or a leper, or one that leaneth on a crutch, or that falleth by the sword, or that lacketh bread.

30 Or, Joab et son frère Abessa avaient constamment épié Abner, parce qu'en Gabaon, pendant la bataille, il avait tué leur frère Asaël.

Thus, Joab and Abishai his brother, slew Abner, —because he had caused the death of Asahel their brother, in Gibeon, in the battle.

31 Et David dit à Joab et à toute la troupe qui était avec lui: Déchirez vos vêtements, couvrez-vous de cilices, et pleurez sur Abner. Et le roi David marcha derrière le brancard.

And David said unto Joab, and unto all the people who were with him, —Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and lament aloud before Abner. And, King David himself, was following the bier.

32 On ensevelit Abner en Hébron, et David éleva la voix, et il pleura sur le sépulcre, et tout le peuple pleura sur Abner.

And they buried Abner in Hebron, —and the king lifted up his voice and wept, at the grave of Abner, and all the people wept.

33 Et le roi fit une lamentation sur Abner, et il dit: La mort d'Abner sera- t-elle comme la mort d'un Nabal?

And the king addressed his dirge unto Abner, and said, —As a base man dieth, should Abner have died?

34 On ne t'a point amené pieds et mains liés comme un Nabal; tu es tombé devant des fils d'iniquité; et tout le peuple assemblé pleura.

Thy hands, were not bound, And, thy feet, near to fetters, were not brought, As one falleth before assassins, so didst thou fall! And again all the people wept over him.

35 Et tout le peuple s'approcha de David pour l'exhorter à manger du pain; or, il faisait encore jour, et David jura, disant: Que le Seigneur me punisse et me punisse encore, si, avant le coucher du soleil, je goûte ni pain ni quoi que ce soit.

And, when all the people came near to get David to eat bread, while yet it was day, David sware, saying—So, let God do to me, and, so, let him add, if, before the sun go in, I taste bread, or anything else.

36 Et le peuple vit la vérité, et il eut pour agréable ce que le roi avait fait devant lui.

And, all the people, took note of it, and it was noble in their eyes, —as, all that the king did, was, in the eyes of all the people, noble.

37 Tout le peuple et tout Israël, ce jour-là, reconnurent que ce n'était point par la volonté du roi qu'Abner, fils de Ner, avait été mis à mort.

So then all the people, and all Israel, took note, that day, that it was not of the king, to cause the death of Abner son of Ner.

38 Et le roi dit à ses serviteurs: Ne savez-vous pas qu'un grand prince est tombé aujourd'hui en Israël,

And the king said unto his servants, —Will ye not take note that, a prince and a great man, hath fallen this day, in Israel?

39 Et que, pour moi, je ne suis encore que comme un parent, un vassal de roi? Les fils de Sarvia sont plus durs que moi. Que le Seigneur traite, selon leur méchanceté, ceux qui font le mal.

And, I myself, this day, am weak, though anointed king, but, these men, the sons of Zeruiah, are more severe than I: Yahweh repay, the doer of wickedness, according to his wickedness.
