2 Samuel 20

1 Et il y avait là, parmi les hommes inculpés, un homme pervers; il se nommait Sabé, fils de Bochori, de la famille de Jémini; il sonna du cor, et il dit: Nos champs ne dépendent point de David; nous ne tenons pas notre héritage du fils de Jessé. Israël, que chacun de nous retourne sous sa tente.

And there happened to be a worthless man, whose name was Sheba', the son of Bichri, a Benjamite; and he blew the cornet, and said, We have no part in David, nor have we any inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to his tents, O Israel!

2 Et tous ceux d'Israël qui suivaient David s'en allèrent avec Sabé, fils de Bochori; et ceux de Juda se serrèrent autour de leur roi, depuis le Jourdain jusqu'à Jérusalem.

So every man of Israel went off from David, following Sheba' the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah adhered unto their king, from the Jordan even to Jerusalem.

3 Et le roi rentra en sa demeure à Jérusalem; là, il prit ses dix concubines qu'il avait laissées pour garder le palais, les fit renfermer et les pourrit; mais il ne s'approcha plus d'elles, et elles furent recluses jusqu'au jour de leur mort, vivant comme des veuves.

And David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten women, the concubines, whom he had left to guard the house, and put them in a guard-house, and provided for them, but went not in unto them. So they were confined until the day of their death, living in widowhood.

4 Après cela, le roi dit à Amessaï: Fais-moi venir dans trois jours les hommes de Juda, et reviens ici.

Then said the king to 'Amassa, Call together for me the men of Judah within three days, and thou present thyself here [then].

5 Et Amessaï partit pour convoquer Juda; mais il tarda plus que ne le lui avait prescrit David.

So 'Amassa went to call Judah together; but he remained out longer than the set time which he had appointed him.

6 Et David dit à Abessa: Maintenant Sabé, fils de Bochori, va nous faire plus de mal qu'Absalon; prends donc avec toi les serviteurs de ton maître, et poursuis-le, avant qu'il ait trouvé quelque ville forte, car alors il obscurcirait nos yeux.

And David said to Abishai, Now will Sheba' the son of Bichri do us more harm than [did] Abshalom: take thou the servants of thy Lord, and pursue after him, lest he succeed in reaching fortified cities, and withdraw himself from our eyes.

7 Et Abessa sortit pour le poursuivre avec les hommes de Joab, et Chéléthi, et Phéléthi et tous les vaillants; tous sortirent de Jérusalem afin de poursuivre Sabé, fils de Bochori.

And there went out after him Joab's men, and the Kerethites, and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men: and they went forth out of Jerusalem, to pursue after Sheba' the son of Bichri.

8 Ils étaient vers la grande pierre que l'on voit en Gabaon, quand Amessaï arriva devant l'armée. Joab avait une casaque sur son vêtement, et par-dessus la ceinture, une dague dont le fourreau était attaché le long de sa hanche; cette dague n'était pas plutôt tirée qu'elle frappait.

They were close by the great stone which is at Gib'on, as 'Amassa came before them. And Joab was girded with his coat, his [usual] garment, and upon it the girdle of the sword which was fastened upon his loins in its sheath; and as he went forth it fell out.

9 Et Joab dit à Amessaï: Es-tu en bonne santé, mon frère? En même temps, de la main droite, il lui prit la barbe pour l'embrasser.

And Joab said to 'Amassa, Art thou in health, my brother? And Joab's right hand took hold of 'Amassa's beard to kiss him.

10 Amessaï ne prit point garde à la dague que Joab tenait à la main; celui- ci le frappa au ventre; les entrailles se répandirent à terre, et il ne lui porta pas un second coup, car il était mort; puis Joab, avec son frère Abessa, se mit à la poursuite de Sabé, fils de Bochori.

And 'Amassa did not guard himself against the sword that was in Joab's hand: so he smote him therewith in the fifth rib and shed out his bowels to the ground, and struck him not again; and he died. But Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba' the son of Bichri.

11 Cependant, un serviteur de Joab s'arrêtant près du corps d'Amessaï, dit: Qui veut Joab; qui est pour David, et veut suivre Joab?

And one man of Joab's people remained standing by him, and said, He that favoreth Joab, and he that is for David, follow Joab.

12 Et Amessaï, baigné dans son sang, gisait au milieu du chemin, quand un homme, voyant que toute l'armée s'arrêtait, traîna le corps dans un champ voisin, et le couvrit d'un manteau, parce qu'il avait remarqué que chacun s'arrêtait auprès de lui.

And 'Amassa was wallowing in his blood in the midst of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he put 'Amassa aside out of the highway into the field, and threw a garment over him, when he saw that every one that came by him stood still.

13 Aussitôt qu'il l'eut retiré du chemin, tout Israël passa, et se mit avec Joab à la poursuite de Sabé, fils de Bochori.

When he was removed out of the highway, every man passed on after Joab, to pursue after Sheba' the son of Bichri.

14 Celui-ci, à travers toutes les tribus d'Israël, atteignit Abel et Bethmacha; à ce moment, tous ceux de Charrhi étaient rassemblés, et ils le suivirent.

And this one passed through all the tribes of Israel unto Abel, which is of Beth-ma'achah, and all the Berim: and they assembled themselves together, and went also after him.

15 On le rejoignit, on l'assiégea dans Abel et Permacha; on l'entoura de terrasses qu'on poussa jusqu'aux remparts; et toute l'armée de Joab se préparait à les saper.

And they came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-ma'achah, and they cast up a trench against the city, and it stood enclosed by the troops: and all the people that were with Joab were battering to throw down the wall.

16 Quand une femme expérimentée cria du haut de la muraille: Écoutez, écoutez, dites à Joab qu'il approche, j'ai à lui parler.

Then called a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear: say, I pray you, unto Joab, Come near as far as hither, that I may speak with thee.

17 Il s'approcha d'elle, et la femme dit: Es-tu Joab? Je le suis, dit-il; et elle reprit: Écoute un mot de ta servante. Il répliqua: Je t'écoute.

And when he was come near unto her, the woman said, Art thou Joab? And he said, I am. Then said she unto him, Hear the words of thy hand-maid. And he said, I do hear.

18 Alors, elle dit: Il y avait un proverbe chez nos pères; lorsque parmi les fidèles d'Israël, un de leurs desseins venait à manquer, on disait: Il faut consulter et consulter à Abel ou à Dan. Maintenant tes hommes consultent et consultent en Abel, après avoir, eux aussi, défailli.

Then said she, thus, They ought surely first to have spoken, saying, “Let them ask at least in Abel:” and so would they have come to an end.

19 Or, Abel te répond: Je suis pacifique parmi les appuis d'Israël, et toi, tu cherches à faire périr une ville et une métropole d'Israël; pourquoi veux- tu jeter dans l'abîme l'héritage du Seigneur?

I am one of the peaceful and faithful [cities] in Israel; thou seekest to overthrow a city and a metropolis in Israel: why wilt thou destroy the inheritance of the Lord?

20 Et Joab prit la parole, et il dit: Dieu me soit propice, qu'il me soit propice, je ne veux ni abîmer, ni détruire.

And Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should destroy or ruin.

21 Ce n'est point de cela qu'il s'agit, mais un homme des montagnes d'Ephraïm qui se nomme Sabé, fils de Bochori, a levé la main contre le roi David. Livrez-moi celui-là seul, et je m'éloignerai soudain de la ville. Et la femme dit à Joab: Voilà que sa tète va tomber devant toi du haut de la muraille.

The matter is not so; but a man from the mountains of Ephraim, Sheba' the son of Bichri is his name, hath lifted up his hand against the king, against David: give him up alone, and I will withdraw from the city. And the woman said unto Joab, Behold, his head shall be cast down to thee over the wall.

22 Aussitôt, la femme entra à l'assemblée du peuple, et elle parla sagement à toute la ville. On trancha la tête de Sabé, fils de Bochori, et on la jeta devant Joab; celui-ci fit sonner du cor; l'armée se dispersa, chacun retourna en sa demeure. Et Joab revint à Jérusalem auprès du roi.

And the woman came unto all the people with her wisdom; and they cut off the head of Sheba' the son of Bichri, and cast it down to Joab: and he blew the cornet, and they scattered themselves from the city, every man to his tents. And Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.

23 Joab commandait toute l'armée d'Israël; Banaïas, fils de Joiada, avait sous ses ordres Chéléthi et Phéléthi.

Now Joab was over all the army of Israel; and Benayah the son of Yehoyada' was over the Kerethites and over the Pelethites;

24 Adoniram était intendant des impôts, et Josaphath, fils d'Achilud, garde des actes publics.

And Adoram was over the tribute; and Jehoshaphat the son of Achilud was recorder;

25 Susa était scribe, Sadoc et Abiathar, prêtres.

And Sheva was scribe; and Zadok and Ebyathar were priests;

26 Iras, fils d'Iarin, était prêtre de David.

And 'Ira also the Yairite was an officer of state unto David.
