2 Samuel 18
1 Et David inspecta le, peuple qui était avec lui, et lui donna des centeniers et des commandants de mille hommes.
David organized the men who were with him and put commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds in charge of them.
2 Puis, il fit partir le tiers de son armée avec Joab; le second tiers avec Abessa, fils de Sarvia, frère de Joab; le dernier tiers avec Ethi le Géthéen; et David dit aux siens: Moi aussi je me mettrai en campagne avec vous.
David sent the army out divided into three sections. One third was commanded by Joab, one third was commanded by Abishai, son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and one third was commanded by Ittai the Gittite. The king told the men, “I myself will go out into battle with you.”
3 Et ils s'écrièrent: Ne sors point; car, si nous venions à fuir, ce n'est pas nous que tes ennemis ont à cœur; si la moitié de nous venait à périr, ce n'est pas nous qu'ils ont à cœur, parce que tu vaux dix mille de nous. Il est bon maintenant que tu restes dans la ville, où tu es notre soutien.
But the men replied, “No, you must not go out into battle! For if we have to run away, they won't care about us. Even if half of us die, they won't care about that either. But you are worth ten thousand of us, so it's better if you stay here and send us help from the town.”
4 Le roi reprit: Je ferai ce qui est agréable à vos yeux. Et le roi se tint à deux pas de la porte, tandis que sa troupe entière sortait par corps de cent et de mille hommes.
“I will do whatever you think best,” the king replied. The king stood beside the gate while all his men marched out by hundreds and by thousands.
5 Et le roi donna des ordres à Joab, Abessa et Elhi, disant: Pour l'amour de moi, épargnez Absalon; toute l'armée entendit ce que le roi prescrivait aux chefs, concernant Absalon.
The king ordered Joab, Abishai and Ittai, “Treat young Absalom gently for me.” All the men heard the king giving orders to each of his commanders about Absalom.
6 Toute l'armée étant sortie, se rangea en face d'Israël dans la forêt, et la bataille fut livrée dans la forêt d'Ephraïm.
David's army marched out to face the Israelites in battle, which was fought in the forest of Ephraim.
7 Là, Israël échoua contre les serviteurs de David; il y eut, en ce jour- là, un grand carnage; Israël perdit vingt mille hommes.
The Israelites were defeated by David's men and many were killed that day—some twenty thousand.
8 Le combat s'étendit sur toute la terre environnante, et le nombre de ceux que dévora la forêt surpassa le nombre de ceux que le glaive avait dévorés.
The battle covered the whole countryside, and that day more died because of the forest than were killed by the sword.
9 Or, Absalon se trouva face à face avec des serviteurs de David; il était monté sur sa mule, la mule entra sous le branchage touffu d'un grand chêne, et la tête d'Absalon fut prise dans le chêne; il resta donc suspendu entre le ciel et la terre, et la mule s'échappa.
Absalom ran into some of David's men while he was riding on his mule. As the mule went under the twisted branches of a large oak tree, Absalom's hair got caught in the tree. The mule he was riding kept going, leaving him hanging between earth and sky.
10 Un homme le vit, en informa Joab, et lui dit: Voilà que j'ai vu Absalon suspendu sous un chêne.
One of David's men saw what happened, so he told Joab, “I just saw Absalom hanging from an oak tree!”
11 Et Joab dit à l'homme qui lui apportait cette nouvelle: Tu l'as vu; et pourquoi ne l'as-tu pas d'un seul coup jeté à terre? Je t'aurais donné dix sicles d'argent avec une ceinture.
“What! You saw him like that?” Joab said to the man. “Why didn't you kill him right then and there? I would have given you ten shekels of silver and a soldier's belt as a reward!”
12 L'homme reprit: Pour moi, quand même j'aurais reçu mille sicles d'argent, je ne porterais pas la main sur le fils du roi, parce que nous avons ouï le roi donner ses ordres à toi, à Abessa et à Ethi, disant: Pour l'amour de moi, épargnez mon fils Absalon;
But the man replied, “Even if you gave me a thousand shekels of silver, I wouldn't hurt the king's son. We all heard the king give the order to you, Abishai, and Ittai, ‘Look after young Absalom for me.’
13 Que l'on n'attente pas à sa vie. Toute l'affaire serait connue de David, et toi-même tu serais contre moi.
If I had disobeyed and killed Absalom—and the king finds out everything—you yourself wouldn't have defended me.”
14 Alors, Joab s'écria: C'est donc moi qui le ferai; je ne resterai pas ainsi devant toi. A ces mots, il prit en ses mains trois traits et il les lança dans le cœur d'Absalon, qui vivait encore, suspendu au milieu du chêne.
“I'm not going to waste time waiting around like this with you!” Joab told him. He grabbed three spears and drove them into Absalom's heart while he was still alive, hanging from the oak tree.
15 Puis, dix serviteurs, qui portaient les armes de Joab, entourèrent Absalon, et le frappant, ils l'achevèrent.
Ten of Joab's armor-bearers surrounded Absalom and hacked him to death.
16 Et Joab fit sonner du cor; et l'armée, revenant sur ses pas, cessa de poursuivre Israël, et Joab épargna le peuple.
Then Joab blew the ram's horn, and his men stopped chasing the Israelites because Joab had signaled them to stop.
17 Ensuite, il prit Absalon, le jeta au fond d'une crevasse; sous la chênaie, dans une fosse profonde, et le recouvrit d'un grand monceau de pierres; tout Israël s'enfuit chacun sous sa tente.
They took Absalom and threw him into a deep pit in the forest, and piled a large heap of stones over him. All the Israelites ran away to their homes.
18 Absalon, de son vivant, avait dressé pour lui une colonne, près de laquelle il fut pris; et il l'avait ainsi dressée afin d'avoir une colonne dans le val du Roi; car, disait-il, je n'ai point de fils qui perpétuerait la mémoire de mon nom. Et de nos jours encore on nomme cette colonne, la Main d'Absalon.
Absalom while he was alive had made a stone pillar and set it up in the King's Valley as a memorial to himself, for he thought to himself, “I don't have a son to keep the memory of my name alive.” He named the pillar after himself, and it's called Absalom's Monument even today.
19 Or, Achimaas, fils de Sadoc, dit: Je vais courir et porter au roi la bonne nouvelle que le Seigneur l'a tiré des mains de ses ennemis.
Then Ahimaaz, son of Zadok, said, “Please let me run and take the good news to the king that the Lord has vindicated him over his enemies.”
20 Mais, Joab lui répondit Aujourd'hui tu ne serais pas le messager d'une bonne nouvelle, un autre jour tu la porteras plus à propos. A ce moment ce ne serait pas une bonne nouvelle, parce que le fils du roi est mort.
“You're not the man to take the good news today,” Joab replied. “You can do it some other time, but don't do it today, because the king's son is dead.”
21 Et Joab dit à Chusaï: Va rapporter au roi ce que tu as vu. Chusaï se prosterna devant Joab et partit.
So Joab said to a man from Ethiopia, “Go and tell the king what you have seen.” He bowed to Joab and ran off.
22 Achimaas, fils de Sadoc, reprit la parole et dit à Joab: Je vais courir après Chusaï. Mon fils, répondit Joab, pourquoi veux-tu courir? Reste; ce n'est point une bonne nouvelle, et tu n'auras aucun profit à la porter.
Ahimaaz asked Joab again, “Never mind what happens, please let me run too, after the Ethiopian!” “Son, why do you want to run—you won't get anything for it?” Joab replied.
23 La sentinelle élevant la voix l'annonça au roi, et le roi dit: S'il est seul, il a sur les lèvres une bonne nouvelle. Or, l'homme allait toujours et il approchait.
“Doesn't matter, I want to run anyway,” he said. “Fine, start running!” Joab told him. Ahimaaz took the route over flatter ground and overtook the Ethiopian.
24 Or, David était assis entre les deux portes, quand une sentinelle placée sur la plate-forme de la porte du rempart leva les yeux, et vit un homme seul qui courait devant elle.
David was sitting between the inside and outside gates. The watchman climbed up to the roof of the gateway by the wall. He looked out, and saw a man running by himself.
25 La sentinelle élevant la voix l'annonça au roi, et le roi dit: S'il est seul, il a sur les lèvres une bonne nouvelle. Or, l'homme allait toujours et il approchait.
So he shouted down to tell the king. “If he's by himself then he's bringing good news,” the king replied. As the first runner got closer,
26 Et la sentinelle, voyant un autre homme qui courait, cria pour être entendue au bas de la porte, et dit: Voilà un autre homme qui court seul, et le roi dit: Celui-ci encore apporte une bonne nouvelle.
the watchman saw someone else running, and he shouted down to the gatekeeper, “Look! There's another man running by himself!” “He'll also be bringing good news,” said the king.
27 La sentinelle reprit: Je reconnais à sa manière de courir que le premier est Achimaas, fils de Sadoc. C'est un homme bon, dit le roi, il n'arrivera qu'avec une bonne nouvelle.
“The first man seems to me to be running like Ahimaaz, son of Zadok,” said the watchman. “He's a good man,” he king replied. “He'll bring good news.”
28 Et Achimaas éleva la voix, et il cria: La paix; puis, il se prosterna devant le roi la face contre terre, et il dit: Béni soit le Seigneur Dieu qui a fait échouer les hommes dont la main s'était levée contre le roi mon maître.
Ahimaaz shouted out greetings to the king, Then he came and he bowed facedown before the king. “Blessed be the Lord your God!” he said. “He has defeated the men who rebelled against Your Majesty!”
29 David répondit: Mon fils Absalon se porte-t-il bien? Et Achimaas reprit: J'ai vu une grande multitude au moment où Joab venait d'envoyer le serviteur du roi et ton serviteur, mais je n'ai point su ce qui se passait.
“How is young Absalom? Is he alright?” the king asked. Ahimaaz answered, “It was very chaotic when your officer Joab sent me, your servant. I really don't know what was happening.”
30 Et le roi dit: Mets-toi de coté et reste ici. Achirimas se détourna et ne bougea plus.
“Stand to one side and wait,” the king told him. So Ahimaaz stood to one side and waited.
31 Alors, Chusaï arriva, et il dit: Bonne nouvelle pour le roi mon maître! le Seigneur t'a vengé aujourd'hui de ceux qui s'étaient levés contre toi.
Right then the Ethiopian arrived and said, “Your Majesty, listen to the good news! Today the Lord has defeated all those who rebelled against you!”
32 Le roi répondit: Mon fils Absalon se porte-t-il bien? Et Chusaï répondit: Puissent les mêmes maux qui ont frappé le jeune homme atteindre tous tes ennemis, et ceux qui se sont levés contre toi.
“How is young Absalom? Is he alright?” the king asked. The Ethiopian replied, “May what has happened to the young man happen to Your Majesty's enemies, and to everyone who rebels against you!”
33 Et le roi fut troublé; il monta dans la salle au-dessus de la porte, il pleura, et en s'y promenant il s'écriait: Mon fils Absalon, mon fils, mon fils Absalon, qui m'accordera de mourir au lieu de toi? Ma mort au lieu de la tienne, mon fils Absalon, mon fils!
The king broke down. He went up to the room over the gate and cried. As he walked, he sobbed out, “My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! I wish I'd died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son!”
