1 Or, dans le temps que le Seigneur ravit Elie, comme au ciel au milieu d'un tourbillon, Elie et Elisée sortirent de Galgala.
Shortly before the LORD took Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal,
2 Et Elie dit à Elisée: Reste ici, car Dieu veut que j'aille jusqu'à Béthel. Elisée répondit: Vive le Seigneur, et vive ton 'âme, je ne te quitterai pas. Ils entrèrent donc à Béthel.
and Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to Bethel.” But Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel.
3 Et les fils des prophètes qui étaient à Béthel, s'approchèrent d'Elisée, et ils lui dirent: Ne sais-tu pas qu'aujourd'hui le Seigneur doit ravir ton maître au-dessus de ta tête? Il répondit Oui, je le sais, gardez le silence.
Then the sons of the prophets at Bethel came out to Elisha and said, “Do you know that the LORD will take your master away from you today?” “Yes, I know,” he replied. “Do not speak of it.”
4 Elie dit ensuite à Elisée: Reste ici, car Dieu veut que j'aille jusqu'à Jéricho. Et il répondit: Vive le Seigneur, et vive ton âme! je ne te quitterai pas. Ils entrèrent donc à Jéricho.
And Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to Jericho.” But Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went to Jericho.
5 Et les fils des prophètes qui étaient à Jéricho s'approchèrent d'Elisée, et ils lui dirent Ne sais-tu pas qu'aujourd'hui le Seigneur doit ravir ton maître au-dessus de ta tête? Il répondit: Oui, je le sais, gardez le silence.
Then the sons of the prophets at Jericho came up to Elisha and said, “Do you know that the LORD will take your master away from you today?” “Yes, I know,” he replied. “Do not speak of it.”
6 Elie lui dit ensuite: Reste ici, le Seigneur veut que j'aille jusqu'au Jourdain. Elisée répondit: Vive le Seigneur et vive ton âme! je ne te quitterai point. Ils marchèrent donc tous les deux.
And Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to the Jordan.” But Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on.
7 Or, il y avait au loin, vis-à-vis d'eux, cinquante fils des prophètes, et ils s'arrêtèrent l'un et l'autre aux bords du fleuve.
Then a company of fifty of the sons of the prophets went and stood at a distance, facing Elijah and Elisha as the two of them stood by the Jordan.
8 Et Elie prit sa peau de brebis, la fit tourner, et en frappa l'eau du fleuve: et l'eau se sépara à leur droite et à leur gauche; ils passèrent tous les deux, et ils s'en furent dans le désert.
And Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up, and struck the waters, which parted to the right and to the left, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground.
9 Pendant qu'ils traversaient le Jourdain, Elie dit à Elisée: Demande ce que je ferai pour toi avant d'être ravi loin de toi. Elisée répondit: Que j'aie part à ton double esprit.
After they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken away from you?” “Please, let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied.
10 Elie reprit: Tu as demandé une chose difficile: si tu me vois quand je serai ravi d'auprès de toi, il en sera pour toi ainsi; sinon, cela ne sera pas.
“You have requested a difficult thing,” said Elijah. “Nevertheless, if you see me as I am taken from you, it will be yours. But if not, then it will not be so.”
11 Ils parlaient ainsi en marchant, et voilà qu'un char de feu et des chevaux de feu les séparèrent l'un de l'autre; puis, Elie fut ravi dans un tourbillon comme au ciel.
As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire with horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up into heaven in a whirlwind.
12 Et Elisée le vit, et il cria: Père, père, char et conducteur d'Israël. Bientôt il ne le vit plus; et il saisit ses vêtements, et il les déchira en deux lambeaux.
As Elisha watched, he cried out, “My father, my father, the chariots and horsemen of Israel!” And he saw Elijah no more. So taking hold of his own clothes, he tore them in two.
13 Ensuite, Elisée ramassa la peau de brebis qui était tombée de dessus Elie, et s'en retourna. Il s'arrêta aux bords du Jourdain.
Elisha also picked up the cloak that had fallen from Elijah, and he went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan.
14 Et il prit la peau de brebis qui était tombée de dessus Elie, en frappa l'eau du fleuve, et dit: Où est maintenant le Dieu d'Elfe? Et il frappa les eaux, qui s'ouvrirent à droite et à gauche, et Elisée passa.
Then he took the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the waters. “Where now is the LORD, the God of Elijah?” he asked. And when he had struck the waters, they parted to the right and to the left, and Elisha crossed over.
15 Les fils des prophètes qui étaient à Jéricho, sur la rive opposée, le virent alors arriver, et dirent: L'esprit d'Elie est resté sur Elisée. Et ils allèrent à sa rencontre, et se prosternèrent devant lui la face contre terre.
When the sons of the prophets who were facing him from Jericho saw what had happened, they said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” And they went to meet him and bowed down to the ground before him.
16 Puis, ils lui dirent: Il y a avec tes serviteurs cinquante hommes vaillants; qu'ils partent, qu'ils s'informent de ton maître; est-ce que l'Esprit du Seigneur l'a ravi, et l'a jeté dans le Jourdain ou sur l'une des montagnes, ou sur l'une des collines? Mais Elisée répondit: N'envoyez pas.
“Look now,” they said to Elisha, “we your servants have fifty valiant men. Please let them go and search for your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the LORD has taken him up and put him on one of the mountains or in one of the valleys.” “Do not send them,” Elisha replied.
17 Ils le pressèrent tant qu'il en eut honte, il dit enfin: Envoyez; en conséquence, ils firent partir cinquante hommes qui cherchèrent trois jours, et ne trouvèrent point Elie.
But when they pressed him to the point of embarrassment, he said, “Send them.” And they sent fifty men, who searched for three days but did not find Elijah.
18 Ils revinrent auprès d'Elisée, car il s'était établi à Jéricho, et il leur dit: Ne vous avais-je point dit: Ne partez pas.
When they returned to Elisha, who was staying in Jericho, he said to them, “Didn’t I tell you not to go?”
19 Or, les hommes de la ville dirent à Elisée: Voilà que la ville est bien située comme celles que regarde le Seigneur, mais les eaux y sont mauvaises et la terre est stérile.
Then the men of the city said to Elisha, “Please note, our lord, that the city’s location is good, as you can see. But the water is bad and the land is unfruitful.”
20 Et Elisée dit: Prenez-moi une cruche neuve et mettez-y du sel. Ils prirent donc une cruche, et la lui apportèrent.
“Bring me a new bowl,” he replied, “and put some salt in it.” So they brought it to him,
21 Ensuite, Elisée alla à la source, y versa le sel, et dit: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: J'ai assaini ces eaux; il n'y aura plus ici ni mortalité ni stérilité.
and Elisha went out to the spring, cast the salt into it, and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘I have healed this water. No longer will it cause death or unfruitfulness.’”
22 Et les eaux sont restées saines jusqu'à nos jours, selon la parole qu'avait dite Elisée.
And the waters there have been healthy to this day, according to the word spoken by Elisha.
23 De là, il monta à Béthel, et comme il marchait dans le chemin, de petits enfants sortirent de la ville, le raillèrent, et lui dirent: Monte, chauve, monte.
From there, Elisha went up to Bethel, and as he was walking up the road, a group of boys came out of the city and jeered at him, chanting, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!”
24 Il se retourna, les vit, et les maudit au nom du Seigneur; or, voilà que deux ours s'élancèrent de la forêt, et mirent en pièces quarante-deux de ces enfants.
Then he turned around, looked at them, and called down a curse on them in the name of the LORD. Suddenly two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys.
25 De là, il alla au mont Carmel, puis il retourna à Samarie.
And Elisha went on to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.
