1 En la vingt-troisième année du règne de Joas, fils d'Ochozias, roi de Juda, Joachaz, fils de Jéhu, commença en Samarie un règne qui dura dix-sept ans.
In the twenty-third year of Joash son of Ahaziah king of Judah, began Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, to reign over Israel, in Samaria, [and he reigned] seventeen years.
2 Et il fit le mal aux 'yeux du Seigneur; il marcha dans les péchés où Jéroboam, fils de Nabat, avait fait tomber les fils d'Israël, et il ne s'en retira point.
And he did the thing that was wicked in the eyes of Yahweh, —and went after the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat which he caused, Israel, to commit, he departed not therefrom.
3 Et le Seigneur se courrouça contre Israël; il les livra aux mains d'Azaël, roi de Syrie, et aux mains d'Ader, fils d'Azaël, tant que ces rois vécurent.
Then was kindled the anger of Yahweh against Israel—and he delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Syria, and into the hand of Ben-hadad son of Hazael, continually.
4 Mais Joachaz implora le Seigneur, et le Seigneur l'écouta, parce qu'il vit l'affliction d'Israël; car le roi de Syrie l'affligeait.
And Jehoahaz appeased the face of Yahweh, —and Yahweh hearkened unto him, because he had seen the oppression of Israel, for that, the king of Syria, oppressed them.
5 Et le Seigneur sauva Israël; le peuple fut affranchi du joug des Syriens, et les fils d'Israël furent tranquilles en leurs demeures comme autrefois.
So Yahweh gave unto Israel a saviour, and they went forth from under the hand of Syria, —and the sons of Israel dwelt in their own homes, as aforetime.
6 Cependant, ils ne se retirèrent point des péchés où la maison de Jéroboam avait lait tomber Israël; ils marchèrent dans ces péchés, et laissèrent debout le bois sacré en Samarie.
Howbeit they departed not from the sins of the house of Jeroboam which he caused, Israel, to commit, therein, they walked, —moreover also, the Sacred Stem, still stood in Samaria.
7 Or, Joachaz n'avait plus d'armée, sauf cinquante cavaliers, dix chars et dix mille piétons, parce que le roi de Syrie avait détruit ses troupes, et les avait broyées comme la poussière que l'on foule aux pieds.
For he had not left remaining unto Jehoahaz a people, save only fifty horsemen, and ten chariots, and ten thousand footmen, —for the king of Syria had destroyed them, and had made them like dust in threshing.
8 Quant au reste de l'histoire de Joachaz, aux actions qu'il fit en sa puissance, ne sont-ils pas écrits au livre des Faits et gestes des rois d'Israël.
Now, the rest of the story of Jehoahaz, and all that he did, and his might, are, they, not written in the book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
9 Et Joachaz s'endormit avec ses pères; on l'ensevelit en Samarie, et Joas, son fils, régna à sa place.
So then Jehoahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria, —and, Joash his son, reigned, in his stead.
10 En la trente-septième année du règne de Joas, roi de Juda, Joas, fils de Joachaz, roi d'Israël, commença en Samarie un règne qui dura seize ans.
In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, began Jehoash son of Jehoahaz to reign over Israel, in Samaria, [and he reigned] sixteen years.
11 Et il fit le mal aux yeux du Seigneur, et il ne se retira point des péchés où Jéroboam avait fait tomber Israël; il marcha dans ces péchés.
And he did that which was wicked in the eyes of Yahweh, —he turned not away from all the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he caused, Israel, to commit, therein, he walked.
12 Quant au reste de l'histoire de Joas, roi d'Israël, et à ses combats avec Amasias, roi de Juda, ne sont-ils pas écrits au livre des Faits et gestes des rois d'Israël?
Now, the rest of the story of Joash, and all that he did, and his might, wherewith he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, are, they, not written in the book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
13 Et Joas s'endormit avec ses pères; il avait assis sur son trône Jéroboam, et il fut enseveli en Samarie avec les rois d'Israël.
So then Joash slept with his fathers, and, Jeroboam, took his seat on his throne, —and Joash was buried in Samaria, with the kings of Israel.
14 Et Elisée tomba malade, de la maladie dont il mourut; Joas, roi d'Israël, l'alla trouver; il pleura devant lui, et il dit: Père, père, char et conducteur d'Israël.
Now, Elisha, had fallen sick of his sickness whereof he was about to die, —so then Joash king of Israel came down unto him, and wept upon his face, and said, My father! my father! The chariots of Israel and the horsemen thereof!
15 Elisée lui dit: Prends un arc et une flèche; il prit donc un arc et une flèche.
And Elisha said unto him, Take bow and arrows. So he took unto him bow and arrows.
16 Puis, le prophète dit au roi: Place ta main sur l'arc. Joas y plaça la main, et Elisée imposa ses mains sur les mains du roi.
Then said he unto the king of Israel, Let thy hand rest upon the bow. So he let his hand rest thereon. Then Elisha put his own hands upon the hands of the king;
17 Ensuite, il dit: Ouvre la fenêtre du côté de l'orient. Le roi ouvrit, et Elisée lui dit: Lance le trait. Il le lança, et le prophète dit: Trait de salut du Seigneur, trait de salut contre la Syrie; tu triompheras de la Syrie en Aphec, jusqu'à ce que tu l'aies consumée.
and said—Open the lattice eastward. And he opened it. Then said Elisha—Shoot! And he shot. Then he said, —The arrow of victory by Yahweh, yea the arrow of victory over Syria, therefore shalt thou smite Syria in Aphek, till it be consumed.
18 Elisée lui dit encore: Prends l'arc et les flèches. Le roi les prit, et le prophète dit au roi: Frappe la terre. Et le roi frappa trois fois; puis, il s'arrêta.
And he said—Take the arrows. So he took them. Then said he unto the king of Israel—Smite unto the ground. So he smote three times, and then stayed.
19 L'homme de Dieu s'en affligea sur lui, et il dit: Si tu avais frappé cinq ou six fois, tu aurais frappé la Syrie jusqu'à ce que tu l'eusses consumée. Maintenant, tu ne remporteras sur elle que trois victoires.
Then was the man of God wroth against him, and said—Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times, then, hadst thou smitten Syria, until it had been consumed; But, now, three times, shalt thou smite Syria.
20 Et le prophète mourut, et on l'ensevelit; et des maraudeurs de Moab, au commencement de cette année, vinrent dans la terre promise.
And Elisha died, and they buried him, —now, troops of Moabites, used to enter the land, at the coming in of the year;
21 Or, ceci advint: pendant qu'on ensevelissait Elisée, on vit le corps d'un maraudeur; on le jeta dans la fosse du prophète; il y roula, il toucha les ossements d'Elisée, il ressuscita et il se leva sur ses pieds.
and it came to pass, as, they, were burying a man, that, lo! they saw a troop, so they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha, —and, as soon as the man touched the bones of Elisha, he came to life again, and rose up on his feet.
22 Azaël avait grandement affligé le peuple tout le temps de la vie de Joachaz.
And, Hazael king of Syria, had oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz.
23 Mais le Seigneur eut pitié et compassion des fils d'Israël; il les regarda favorablement, à cause de son alliance avec Abraham, Isaac et Jacob; et le Seigneur ne voulut pas les détruire, il ne les rejeta pas de devant sa face.
Then was Yahweh gracious unto them, and had compassion upon them, and turned unto them, for the sake of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, —and was not willing to destroy them, nor to cast them off from his presence, as yet.
24 Et Azaël mourut, et son fils Ader régna après lui.
So then Hazael king of Syria died; and, Ben-hadad his son, reigned, in his stead.
25 Alors, Joas, fils de Joachaz, se remit en campagne, et il prit à Ader les villes que son père avait prises à Joachaz. Joas remporta trois victoires, et il reprit les villes d'Israël.
And Jehoash son of Jehoahaz again took the cities out of the hand of Ben-hadad son of Hazael, which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father, in war, —three times, did Joash smite him, and recover the cities of Israel.
