1 Et Athalie, mère d'Ochosias, ayant vu que son fils était mort, détruisit toute la race royale.
When Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, saw that her son was dead, she had all the rest of the royal family murdered.
2 Mais Josabeth, fille du roi Joram, sœur d'Ochosias, enleva Joas, fils de son frère; elle le déroba du milieu des fils du roi que l'on massacrait, et le mit, avec sa nourrice, dans une alcôve des chambres à coucher; puis, elle le cacha d'Athalie, et il ne fut point tué.
But Jehosheba, daughter of King Jehoram, sister of Ahaziah, took Ahaziah's son Joash, stealing him away from the rest of the sons of the king who were being killed. She put him and his nurse in a bedroom to hide him from Athaliah, and he was not murdered.
3 Il resta six ans caché avec elle dans le temple du Seigneur, pendant qu'Athalie régnait sur la terre.
Joash stayed hidden in the Lord's Temple for six years while Athaliah ruled the country.
4 Dans la septième année, Joïada envoya des messagers, et convoqua les centeniers des gardes et des coureurs; il les emmena dans le temple du Seigneur, et il fit avec eux l'alliance du Seigneur; il leur fit prêter serment, leur montra le fils du roi,
In the seventh year, Jehoiada sent for the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, and the guards, and brought them into the Lord's Temple. He made an agreement with them and made them swear an oath. There in the Lord's Temple he showed them the king's son
5 Et leur donna ses ordres, disant: Voilà ce que vous ferez. Le tiers de vos hommes, entrant en semaine, gardera la porte qui mène au palais du roi;
and ordered them, “This is what you are going to do: One third of you who come on duty on the Sabbath will guard the royal palace.
6 Un autre tiers gardera la porte de la grande rue, et le dernier tiers la porte derrière les coureurs; vous garderez tous le temple,
One third will be at the Sur Gate, and one third at the gate behind the guards. You will alternate in guarding the palace.
7 Et vous formerez deux troupes; tous ceux qui sortiront de semaine garderont aussi le temple du Seigneur auprès du roi.
The two divisions that would normally go off duty on the Sabbath will guard the Lord's Temple for the king.
8 Ils entoureront le roi les armes à la main; quiconque entrera dans les rangs mourra; ils ne quitteront pas le roi, soit qu'il entre, soit qu'il sorte.
Surround the king with weapons drawn, and anyone who approaches this line must be killed. Stay close to the king wherever he goes.”
9 Et les centeniers firent tout ce que leur avait prescrit le sage Joïada. Chacun d'eux prit ses hommes; et ceux qui entraient en semaine se réunirent à ceux qui en sortaient, et ils s'introduisirent auprès de Joïada le prêtre.
The commanders of hundreds followed all the instructions that Jehoiada the priest had given. They each took their own men, those who were coming on duty on the Sabbath and those going off duty, and came to Jehoiada the priest.
10 Et le prêtre leur donna les épées et les lances du roi David qui étaient dans le temple du Seigneur.
Then the priest handed over to the commanders of hundreds the spears and shields that had belonged to King David which were kept in the Lord's Temple.
11 Et chacun des coureurs se tenait, les armes à la main, tant à droite qu'à gauche de l'autel, occupant les deux ailes du temple et entourant le roi.
The guards stood with weapons drawn surrounding the king by the altar, and in a line around the Temple, from the south side to the north side of the Temple.
12 Alors, Joïada leur présenta le fils du roi Ochozias; il lui donna la couronne et le livre de la loi, il le proclama roi et il le sacra; et les assistants battirent des mains, et ils crièrent: Vive le roi!
Then Jehoiada led out the king's son, placed the crown on him, and handed him a copy of God's Law. They proclaimed him king and anointed him. The people clapped, and shouted, “Long live the king!”
13 Et Athalie entendit la clameur de ceux du peuple qui couraient; elle entra, parmi le peuple, dans le temple du Seigneur.
When Athaliah heard the noise of the guards and the people, she rushed to the crowds at the Lord's Temple.
14 Elle vit le roi assis sur son trône selon la coutume; puis, autour de lui, les chanteurs, les trompettes. Et tout le peuple de la terre, plein de joie, sonnait de la trompette. Et Athalie déchira ses vêtements, et elle cria: Complot! complot!
She saw the king standing by his pillar as the custom was. The commanders and trumpeters were with the king, and everyone was celebrating and blowing trumpets. Athaliah ripped her clothes and screamed out, “Treason! Treason!”
15 Et le prêtre Joïada donna ses ordres aux centeniers, chefs de l'armée; il leur dit: Entraînez-la hors des rangs; quiconque la suivra, mourra de mort par l'épée. Et le prêtre ajouta: Qu'elle ne meure point dans le temple du Seigneur.
Jehoiada ordered the army commanders, “Bring her to the men standing in front of the Temple, and kill anyone who follows her.” Earlier the priest had made it clear, “She must not be killed in the Lord's Temple.”
16 Ils mirent donc la main sur elle; et ils sortirent, prenant le chemin par où passaient les chevaux de la maison du roi, et là, ils la tuèrent.
They grabbed hold of her, took her to where the horses enter the palace grounds and they killed her there.
17 Et Joïada fit alliance entre le Seigneur et le roi; puis, entre le Seigneur et le peuple, pour que le peuple demeurât le peuple de Dieu; puis, enfin, entre le roi et le peuple.
Then Jehoiada made a solemn agreement between the Lord, the king, and the people that they would be the Lord's people. He also made an agreement between the king and the people.
18 Et tout le peuple de la terre entra dans le temple de Baal; ils le renversèrent, ils brisèrent ses autels et ses images, et ils tuèrent devant l'autel Mathan, prêtre de Baal. Ensuite, Joïada plaça des surveillants dans le temple du Seigneur.
Everyone went to the Temple of Baal and tore down its altars and smashed the idols to pieces. They killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, right in front of the altar. Then Jehoiada the priest had guards posted at the Lord's Temple.
19 Il se mit à la tête des centeniers, des gardes, des coureurs et de tout le peuple de la terre; ils emmenèrent le roi du temple du Seigneur, et ils prirent la rue de la porte des coureurs du roi, et ils le firent asseoir sur le trône royal.
Along with the commanders, the nobles, the governors of the people, and all the people, he led the king in a procession down from the Lord's Temple, entering through the upper gate to the royal palace. There they set the king on the royal throne.
20 Et tout le peuple de la terre fut en joie; la ville resta calme; Athalie avait péri par l'épée dans le palais du roi.
All throughout the land people celebrated, and Jerusalem was at peace, because Athaliah had been killed by the sword at the palace.
21 Joas avait sept ans quand commença son règne.
Joash was seven when he became king.
