2 Chroniques 32
1 Or, après ces choses faites avec sincérité, Sennachérib, roi des Assyriens, vint envahir Juda, et campa devant les villes fortes pour s'en emparer.
Now after these things and this true-hearted work, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, came into Judah, and put his army in position before the walled towns of Judah, designing to make his way into them by force.
2 Et Ezéchias vit que Sennachérib s'avançait et menaçait Jérusalem.
And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come for the purpose of fighting against Jerusalem,
3 Et il tint conseil avec ses anciens et ses vaillants, leur proposant de clore les fontaines hors de la ville; et ils l'appuyèrent de toute leur force.
He took up with his rulers and men of war the question of stopping up the water-springs outside the town; and they gave him their support.
4 Il assembla donc beaucoup de monde, et il renferma en des murs les eaux des fontaines, ainsi que le ruisseau qui traverse la ville, disant: C'est de peur que le roi d'Assyrie, venant, ne trouve une abondance d'eau qui le fortifierait.
So they got together a great number of people, and had all the water-springs and the stream flowing through the land stopped up, saying, Why let the kings of Assyria come and have much water?
5 Et Ezéchias augmenta ses défenses; il rétablit toutes les parties des remparts qui s'étaient écroulées et les tours; il bâtit en dehors une seconde enceinte, il releva les fortifications de la ville de David; enfin, il fit faire beaucoup d'armes.
Then he took heart, building up the wall where it was broken down, and making its towers higher, and building another wall outside; and he made strong the Millo in the town of David, and got together a great store of all sorts of instruments of war.
6 Ensuite, il mit des chefs de guerre à la tête du peuple qui s'assembla devant lui sur l'esplanade, vers la porte de la Vallée, et il lui parla au cœur, disant:
And he put war chiefs over the people, and sent for them all to come together to him in the wide place at the doorway into the town, and to give them heart he said to them,
7 Soyez forts, agissez en hommes, n'ayez ni crainte ni faiblesse devant le roi d'Assyrie, et devant les peuples qui le suivent; car il y a plus d'auxiliaires avec nous qu'avec lui.
Be strong and take heart; have no fear, and do not be troubled on account of the king of Assyria and all the great army with him: for there is a greater with us.
8 Il a pour lui des bras de chair; nous, nous avons le Seigneur notre Dieu, qui combattra pour nous et nous sauvera. Et le peuple fut encouragé par le discours d'Ezéchias, roi de Juda.
With him is an arm of flesh; but we have the Lord our God, helping us and fighting for us. And the people put their faith in what Hezekiah, king of Judah, said.
9 Après cela, Sennachérib, roi des Assyriens, envoya ses serviteurs à Jérusalem, et lui-même, avec toute son armée, était autour de Lachis, et il envoya ses serviteurs au roi Ezéchias et à tout le peuple de Juda renfermé dans Jérusalem, disant:
After this, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, sent his servants to Jerusalem (at that time he was stationed with all his army in front of Lachish), to say to Hezekiah and all the men of Judah in Jerusalem,
10 Voici ce que dit Sennachérib, roi des Assyriens: Sur quoi vous appuyez- vous pour rester immobiles dans l'enceinte de Jérusalem?
Sennacherib, king of Assyria, says, In what are you placing your hope, waiting here in the walled town of Jerusalem?
11 Ezéchias ne vous a-t-il pas trompés, pour vous livrer à la faim, à la soif, à la mort, quand il vous a dit: Le Seigneur notre Dieu nous sauvera des mains du roi d'Assyrie?
Is it not Hezekiah who has got you to do it, causing your death from need of food and water, by saying, The Lord our God will give us salvation out of the hands of the king of Assyria?
12 N'est-ce point cet Ezéchias qui a détruit ses autels et ses hauts lieux, et qui a dit à Juda et à Jérusalem: Vous adorerez sur cet autel, et, sur cet autel, vous offrirez de l'encens?
Has not this same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, Give worship before one altar only, burning offerings on it?
13 Ignorez-vous ce que moi et mes pères avons fait aux peuples de toute la terre? Parmi les dieux des nations de la terre, en est-il un seul qui ait pu sauver son peuple de mes mains?
Have you no knowledge of what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of every land? were the gods of the nations of those lands able to keep their land from falling into my hands?
14 Qui l'a fait, parmi les dieux des nations que nos pères ont exterminées? Si nul d'eux n'a pu sauver son peuple de nos mains, votre Dieu pourra t-il le faire?
Who was there among all the gods of those nations, which my fathers put to destruction, who was able to keep his people safe from my hands? and is it possible that your God will keep you safe from my hands?
15 Qu'Ezéchias cesse donc de vous tromper, qu'il ne vous inspire pas une folle confiance, ne le croyez pas; car nul, des dieux des nations et des royaumes, n'a pu sauver son peuple de mes mains et des mains de nos pères, et votre Dieu ne vous sauvera pas non plus.
So do not be tricked by Hezekiah or let him get you to do this, and do not put any faith in what he says: for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to keep his people safe from my hands, or the hands of my fathers: how much less will your God keep you safe from my hands!
16 Or, les serviteurs de Sennachérib continuèrent de parler contre le Seigneur Dieu et contre son serviteur Ezéchias.
And his servants said even more against the Lord God and against his servant Hezekiah.
17 Lui-même écrivit une lettre pour outrager le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël, et il dit: De même que les dieux des nations de la terre n'ont pu délivrer leurs peuples de mes mains, le Dieu d'Ezéchias ne pourra en aucune manière sauver son peuple.
And he sent letters, in addition, to put shame on the Lord, the God of Israel, and to say evil against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not been able to keep their people safe from my hands, no more will the God of Hezekiah keep his people safe from my hands.
18 Et l'un des serviteurs cria, en langue judaïque, au peuple de Jérusalem qui se tenait sur les remparts, l'invitant à haute voix à les seconder à démolir les murailles, à leur livrer la ville.
These things they said, crying out with a loud voice in the Jews' language, to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, with the purpose of troubling them and putting fear into them, so that they might take the town;
19 Il parla aussi contre le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël, de la même manière que contre les dieux des nations de la terre, œuvres des mains des hommes.
Talking of the God of Jerusalem as if he was like the gods of the peoples of the earth, the work of men's hands.
20 Et, sur ces paroles, le roi Ezéchias et le prophète Isaïe, fils d'Amos, prièrent, et crièrent au ciel.
And Hezekiah the king, and Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, made prayer because of this, crying out to heaven.
21 Et le Seigneur envoya un ange, et il extermina dans le camp assyrien tous les combattants, les chefs et les généraux. Et Sennachérib, la honte au front, retourna en son royaume, et il entra dans le temple de son Dieu; et des hommes, issus de son sang, le firent périr par le glaive.
And the Lord sent an angel who put to death all the men of war and the chiefs and the captains in the army of the king of Assyria. So he went back to his country in shame. And when he came into the house of his god, his sons, the offspring of his body, put him to death there with the sword.
22 Et le Seigneur sauva Ezéchias, ainsi que les habitants de Jérusalem, des mains de Sennachérib, roi d'Assyrie, et des mains de tous les rois, et il leur donna le repos tout alentour.
So the Lord gave Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem salvation from the power of Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, and from all others, giving them rest on every side.
23 Et nombre de gens apportèrent à Jérusalem des présents pour le Seigneur et pour Ezéchias, roi de Juda, et, après cela, il fut glorifié aux yeux de toutes les nations.
And great numbers came to Jerusalem with offerings for the Lord, and things of great price for Hezekiah, king of Judah: so that he was honoured among all nations from that time.
24 En ces jours-là, Ezéchias tomba malade à en mourir, et il pria le Seigneur, et le Seigneur l'exauça, et il lui donna un signe.
In those days Hezekiah was ill and near death; and he made prayer to the Lord, and the Lord in answer gave him a sign.
25 Mais Ezéchias ne lui rendit pas selon ce qu'il en avait reçu; son cœur s'enorgueillit, et la colère du Seigneur éclata contre le roi, contre Juda, contre Jérusalem.
But Hezekiah did not do as had been done to him; for his heart was lifted up in pride; and so wrath came on him and on Judah and Jerusalem.
26 Et Ezéchias s'humilia de s'être enorgueilli en son cœur, et, avec lui, tous les habitants de Jérusalem; et la colère du Seigneur ne vint plus sur eux tant que vécut Ezéchias.
But then, Hezekiah, in sorrow for what he had done, put away his pride; and he and all Jerusalem made themselves low, so that the wrath of the Lord did not come on them in Hezekiah's life-time.
27 Et Ezéchias eut beaucoup de gloire et de richesses; il amassa, en ses trésors, de l'or, de l'argent, des pierreries; il eut des épices, des vases de prix et des arsenaux.
And Hezekiah had very great wealth and honour; and he made himself store-houses for his gold and silver and jewels and spices, and for body-covers and all sorts of beautiful vessels.
28 Il eut des villes où l'on conservait du blé, du vin et de l'huile; il eut des villages et des étables pour toute sorte de bétail, et des bergeries pour les menus troupeaux.
And store-houses for the produce of grain and wine and oil; and buildings for all sorts of beasts and flocks.
29 Il eut des villes, qu'il bâtit pour lui-même, et une grande abondance de bœufs et de brebis; car le Seigneur lui donna d'immenses richesses.
And he made towns for himself, and got together much property in flocks and herds: for God had given him great wealth.
30 Ce fut Ezéchias qui fit l'aqueduc qui amena les eaux de la haute fontaine de Gihon en la ville basse de David, au midi. Ezéchias réussit en toutes ses entreprises.
It was Hezekiah who had the higher spring of the water of Gihon stopped, and the water taken down on the west side of the town of David. In everything he undertook, Hezekiah did well.
31 Néanmoins, le Seigneur l'abandonna pour l'éprouver et savoir ce qu'il avait dans le cœur, lorsque les envoyés des chefs de Babylone vinrent le trouver et le questionner sur le prodige qui avait éclaté en la terre promise.
However, in the business of the representatives sent by the rulers of Babylon to get news of the wonder which had taken place in the land, God gave up guiding him, testing him to see what was in his heart.
32 Le reste des actes d'Ezéchias et sa miséricorde sont écrits en la prophétie d'Isaïe, fils d'Amos, le prophète, et au livre des Rois de Juda et d'Israël.
Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and the good he did, are recorded in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, and in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
33 Et Ezéchias s'endormit avec ses pères, et on l'ensevelit au-dessus des sépulcres des fils de David; et tout Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem l'honorèrent et le glorifièrent à sa mort. Et Manassé, son fils, régna à sa place.
So Hezekiah went to rest with his fathers, and they put his body into the higher part of the resting-places of the sons of David: and all Judah and the people of Jerusalem gave him honour at his death. And Manasseh his son became king in his place.
