1 Samuel 7
1 Et les hommes de Cariath-Iarim vinrent; ils emmenèrent l'arche de l'alliance du Seigneur, et ils l'introduisirent dans la maison qu'Aminadab possédait sur la colline. Puis ils sanctifièrent son fils Eléazar, afin qu'il gardât l'arche de l'alliance du Seigneur.
The men of Kiriath Jearim came, took the ark of Yahweh, and brought it into the house of Abinadab on the hill. They set apart his son Eleazar to keep the ark of Yahweh.
2 A partir du jour où l'arche entra à Cariath-Iarim, bien des jours s'écoulèrent, elle y était déjà depuis vingt ans, quand tout Israël se tourna vers le Seigneur.
From the day the ark remained in Kiriath Jearim, a long time passed, twenty years. All the house of Israel lamented and wished to turn to Yahweh.
3 Alors, Samuel parla à toute la maison d'Israël, disant: Si c'est de tout votre cœur que vous revenez à Dieu, chassez du milieu de vous les dieux étrangers, détruisez leurs bois sacrés, préparez vos âmes pour le Seigneur Dieu, ne servez que lui seul; et il vous affranchira du joug des Philistins.
Samuel said to the entire house of Israel, “If you return to Yahweh with your whole heart, remove the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths from among you, turn your hearts to Yahweh, and worship him only, then he will rescue you from the hand of the Philistines.”
4 Les fils d'Israël chassèrent donc Baal; ils détruisirent les bois sacrés d'Astaroth, et ils ne servirent que le Seigneur.
Then the people of Israel removed the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and worshiped Yahweh only.
5 Et Samuel dit: Réunissez tout Israël en Masphath; et je prierai pour vous le Seigneur.
Then Samuel said, “Bring together all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to Yahweh for you.”
6 Et ils se rassemblèrent en Masphath; ils puisèrent de l'eau, et la répandirent sur la terre devant le Seigneur; ce jour-là ils jeûnèrent, et ils dirent: Nous avons péché devant le Seigneur. Puis, Samuel jugea les fils d'Israël en Masphath.
They gathered at Mizpah, drew water and poured it out before Yahweh. They fasted that day and said, “We have sinned against Yahweh.” It was there that Samuel decided disputes for the people of Israel and led the people.
7 Et les Philistins apprirent que tous les fils d'Israël étaient assemblés en Masphath, les chefs des Philistins se mirent aussitôt en marche contre Israël; les fils d'Israël le surent, et ils eurent crainte des étrangers.
Now when the Philistines heard the people of Israel had gathered at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines attacked Israel. When the people of Israel heard of it, they were afraid of the Philistines.
8 Et les fils d'Israël dirent à Samuel: Ne cesse pas de crier pour nous au Seigneur ton Dieu; il nous sauvera des mains de nos ennemis.
Then the people of Israel said to Samuel, “Do not stop calling out to Yahweh our God for us, so he will save us from the hand of the Philistines.”
9 Samuel prit un agneau de lait, et avec tout le peuple, il l'offrit en holocauste au Seigneur; Samuel cria au Seigneur en faveur du peuple, et le Seigneur l'exauça.
Samuel took a nursing lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to Yahweh. Then Samuel cried out to Yahweh for Israel, and Yahweh answered him.
10 Samuel était à offrir l'holocauste pendant que les Philistins s'avançaient pour combattre Israël; et ce jour-là le Seigneur fit entendre contre les Philistins la grande voix du tonnerre; ils furent confondus, et ils s'enfuirent devant Israël.
As Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines approached to attack Israel. But Yahweh thundered with a loud sound that day against the Philistines and threw them into confusion, and they were routed before Israel.
11 Et les hommes d'Israël sortirent de Masphath, poursuivirent les Philistins, et les taillèrent en pièces jusqu'au-dessous de Bethchor.
The men of Israel went from Mizpah, and they pursued the Philistines and killed them as far as below Beth Kar.
12 Après cela, Samuel prit une pierre qu'il dressa entre Masphath et la vieille ville; et il l'appela Abenézer, Pierre du Secours, et il dit: ici le Seigneur nous a secourus.
Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far Yahweh has helped us.”
13 Ainsi, le Seigneur humilia les Philistins; ils cessèrent d'envahir le territoire d'Israël, et la main du Seigneur se tourna contre les Philistins durant tous les jours de Samuel.
So the Philistines were subdued and they did not enter the border of Israel. The hand of Yahweh was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
14 Et les Philistins rendirent toutes les villes qu'ils avaient prises aux fils d'Israël; ils les rendirent à Israël depuis Ascalon jusqu'à Azot. Israël recouvra ses limites qu'il reprit aux Philistins; cependant la paix régnait entre Israël et l'Amorrhéen.
The towns that the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron to Gath; Israel brought back their territory from the Philistines. Then there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
15 Ensuite, Samuel jugea le peuple, durant tons les jours de sa vie.
Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.
16 Tous les ans il voyageait; il passait dans sa tournée par Béthel, Galgala et Masphath; et en tous ces lieux saints, il jugeait Israël.
Each year he went on a circuit to Bethel, to Gilgal, and to Mizpah. He decided disputes for Israel in all these places.
17 Enfin, il rentrait en Armathem, où était sa demeure; il y jugeait Israël, et il y bâtit un autel au Seigneur.
Then he would return to Ramah, because his house was there; and there also he decided disputes for Israel. He also built an altar there to Yahweh.
