1 Samuel 29

1 Cependant, les Philistins concentrèrent toutes leurs forces vers Apha, et Israël campa à Endor en Jezraël.

Now the Philistines brought all their forces together at Aphek, while Israel camped by the spring in Jezreel.

2 Et les chefs des Philistins allaient en avant, par troupes de cent et de mille hommes; et David, suivi de ses gens, marchaient au dernier rang avec Achis.

As the Philistine leaders marched out their units of hundreds and thousands, David and his men marched behind them with Achish.

3 Or, les chefs des Philistins dirent: Qui sont ceux-là qui nous suivent? Achis leur répondit: N'est-ce pas David le serviteur de Saül, roi d'Israël; voilà bien des jours qu'il est avec nous; la seconde année commence, et, depuis qu'il s'est attaché à moi, jusqu'à ce moment, je n'ai trouvé en lui rien à redire.

Then the commanders of the Philistines asked, “What about these Hebrews?” Achish replied, “Is this not David, the servant of King Saul of Israel? He has been with me all these days, even years, and from the day he defected until today I have found no fault in him.”

4 Les chefs des Philistins s'offensèrent de sa réponse, et ils lui dirent: Renvoie cet homme, qu'il s'en aille en la demeure où tu l'as établi; ne le laisse pas ici, et qu'il ne vienne point avec nous au combat; craignons qu'il ne nous trahisse. Comment se réconcilierait-il avec son maître, sinon avec les têtes de nos hommes?

But the commanders of the Philistines were angry with Achish and told him, “Send that man back and let him return to the place you assigned him. He must not go down with us into battle only to become our adversary during the war. What better way for him to regain the favor of his master than with the heads of our men?

5 N'est-ce pas ce David de qui l'on chantait, en dansant: Saül les a tués par milliers, David les a tués par myriades?

Is this not the David about whom they sing in their dances: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands’?”

6 Achis fit donc appeler David, et il lui dit: Vive le Seigneur! tu es à mes yeux droit et bon; tu sors du camp et tu y rentres avec moi, et je n'ai découvert eu toi aucune méchanceté, depuis le jour où tu es venu me trouver, jusqu'à ce moment. Mais, aux yeux des chefs, tu n'es point bon.

So Achish summoned David and told him, “As surely as the LORD lives, you have been upright in my sight, and it seems right that you should march in and out with me in the army, because I have found no fault in you from the day you came to me until this day. But you have no favor in the sight of the leaders.

7 Ainsi, retire-toi; pars en paix; c'est le moyen de ne rien faire qui semble mal aux chefs des Philistins.

Therefore turn back now and go in peace, so that you will not do anything to displease the leaders of the Philistines.”

8 Et David dit à Achis: Que t'ai-je fait, et qu'as-tu à reprocher à ton serviteur, depuis le jour où je suis arrivé devant toi, jusqu'à ce moment, pour que l'on me défende de combattre les ennemis du roi mon maître?

“But what have I done?” David replied. “What have you found against your servant, from the day I came to you until today, to keep me from going along to fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”

9 Achis répondit à David: A mes yeux, tu es bon; mais les chefs des Philistins ont dit: Il ne viendra pas au combat avec nous.

Achish replied, “I know that you are as pleasing in my sight as an angel of God. But the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He must not go into battle with us.’

10 Lève-toi donc demain de grand matin, emmène tes serviteurs; retournez au lieu où je vous ai établis, et ne laisse point entrer en ton cœur de mauvaise pensée, parce que, selon moi, tu es bon. Levez-vous pour vous mettre en route avant qu'il fasse jours et partez.

Now then, get up early in the morning, along with your master’s servants who came with you, and go as soon as it is light.”

11 Et David avec ses gens se leva de grand matin; ils partirent pour garder la terre des Philistins, et ceux-ci allèrent à Jezraël pour livrer bataille.

So David and his men got up early in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
