1 Samuel 22

1 Ainsi, David s'éloigna et il fut sauvé; il se réfugia dans la caverne d'Odollam; ses frères, la famille de son père, l'apprirent, et ils l'y allèrent trouver.

David therefore went from thence and fled to the cave of Odollam. And when his brethren, and all his father’s house had heard of it, they went down to him thither;

2 Et ils lui amenèrent tous les nécessiteux, tous les hommes perdus de dettes, tous ceux qui souffraient en leur âme; il fut leur chef, et il eut autour de lui quatre cents hommes.

And all that were in distress and oppressed with debt, and under affliction of mind gathered themselves unto him: and he became their prince, and there were with him about four hundred men.

3 Et David partit pour Maspha en Moab, et il dit au roi des Moabites: Que mon père et ma mère demeurent chez toi jusqu'à ce que je sache ce que fera de moi le Seigneur.

And David departed from thence into Maspha of Moab: and he said to the king of Moab: Let my father and my mother tarry with you, I beseech thee, till I know what God will do for me.

4 Il toucha le roi de Moab, et ses parents demeurèrent auprès du roi tout le temps que David passa dans le fort.

And he left them under the eyes of the king of Moab, and they abode with him all the days that David was in the hold.

5 Enfin, Gad le prophète dit à David: Ne te tiens pas renfermé dans une forteresse; mets-toi en campagne, et tu entreras en la terre de Juda. David partit donc, et il s'établit dans la ville de Saric.

And Gad the prophet said to David: Abide not in the hold, depart, and go into the land of Juda. And David departed, and came into the forest of Haret.

6 Et Saül fut informé que l'on avait reconnu David et les hommes qui l'accompagnaient. Saül demeurait alors sur la colline qui domine les champs de Rhama; il avait en main sa javeline, et tous ses serviteurs l'entouraient.

And Saul heard that David was seen, and the men that were with him. Now whilst Saul abode in Gabaa, and was in the wood, which is by Rama, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him,

7 Et Saül dit à ses serviteurs qui l'entouraient: Écoutez-moi, fils de Benjamin; croyez-vous que véritablement le fils de Jessé vous donne à tous des terres ou des vignes, qu'il fasse de vous tous des centeniers ou des commandants de mille hommes,

He said to his servants that stood about him: Hear me now, ye sons of Jemini: will the son of Isai give everyone of you fields, and vineyards, and make you all tribunes, and centurions:

8 Vous qui êtes tous conjurés contre moi, sans que nul m'informe de l'alliance faite entre mon fils Jonathan et le fils de Jessé, sans que nul ait souci de moi et m'apprenne que mon fils a excité contre moi mon serviteur pour m'en faire un ennemi, comme il l'est maintenant?

That all of you have conspired against me, and there is no one to inform me, especially when even my son hath entered into league with the soil of Isai? There is not one of you that pitieth my case, nor that giveth me any information: because my son hath raised up my servant against me, plotting against me to this day.

9 Et Doeg le Syrien, le surveillant des mulets de Saül, répondit: J'ai vu le fils de Jessé à Nomba chez Abimélech le prêtre, fils d'Achitob.

And Doeg the Edomite who stood by, and was the chief among the servants of Saul, answering, said: I saw the son of Isai, in Nobe with Achimelech the son of Achitob the priest.

10 Le prêtre a consulté pour lui le Seigneur; il lui a donné des vivres, et il lui a donné le glaive de Goliath le Philistin.

And he consulted the Lord for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.

11 Le roi envoya chercher Abimélech, fils d'Achitob, et tous les fils de son père, et les prêtres de Nomba; ils comparurent tous devant Saül.

Then the king sent to call for Achimelech the priest the son of Achitob, and all his father’s house, the priests that were in Nobe, and they came all of them to the king.

12 Et le roi dit: Écoute, fils d'Achitob. Sur quoi l'autre dit: Me voici; parle, seigneur.

And Saul said to Achimelech: Hear, thou son of Achitob. He answered: Here I am, my lord.

13 Et Saül reprit: Pourquoi es-tu d'intelligence contre moi avec le fils de Jessé? Ne lui as-tu pas donné des pains? N'as-tu pas pour lui consulté le Seigneur, afin qu'il se déclarât mon ennemi, comme il l'est maintenant?

And Saul said to him: Why have you conspired against me, thou, and the son of Isai, and thou hast given him bread and a sword, and hast consulted the Lord for him, that he should rise up against me, continuing a traitor to this day.

14 Il répondit au roi: Qui donc, parmi tes serviteurs, t'était fidèle autant que David? N'était-il point le gendre du roi, le ministre de tes commandements, honoré en ta maison?

And Achimelech answering the king, said: And who amongst all thy servants is so faithful as David, who is the king’s son in law, and goeth forth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thy house?

15 Est-ce aujourd'hui la première fois que j'aurais consulté pour lui le Seigneur? Nullement. Que le roi ne porte point une telle accusation contre son serviteur et contre toute la famille de mon père; car ton serviteur ne savait de ce qui se passe nulle chose, ni grande ni petite

Did I begin today to consult the Lord for him? far be this from me: let not the king suspect such a thing against his servant, or any one in all my father’s house: for thy servant knew nothing of this matter, either little or great.

16 Et le roi Saül dit: Tu mourras, Abimélech, toi et toute la famille de ton père.

And the king said: Dying thou shalt die, Achimelech, thou and all thy father’s house.

17 Puis, le roi dit aux émissaires qui se tenaient auprès de lui: Emmenez les prêtres du Seigneur, et mettez-les à mort; parce que leur main est avec David; ils le savaient en fuite, et ils ne me l'ont point révélé. Mais les serviteurs du roi refusèrent de porter la main sur les prêtres du Seigneur.

And the king said to the messengers that stood about him: Turn, and kill the priests of the Lord, for their hand is with David, because they knew that he was fled, and they told it not to me. And the king’s servants would not put forth their hands against the priests of the Lord.

18 Le roi dit donc à Doeg: Ceci te regarde, tombe sur les prêtres. Et Doeg le Syrien s'en chargea; et, ce jour-là, il tua tous les prêtres du Seigneur, au nombre de trois cent cinq hommes, tous portant l'éphod.

And the king said to Doeg: Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and fell upon the priests and slew in that day eighty-five men that wore the linen ephod.

19 Ensuite, il passa au fil de l'épée Nomba, la ville des prêtres: hommes et femmes, nourrissons et nourrices; bœufs, ânes et brebis.

And Nobe the city of the priests he smote with the edge of his sword, both men and women, children, and sucklings, and ox and ass, and sheep with the edge of the sword.

20 Un seul fils d'Abimélech, fils d'Achitob, fut sauvé; il se nommait Abiathar, et il se réfugia auprès de David.

But one of the sons of Achimelech the son of Achitob, whose name was Abiathar, escaped, and fled to David,

21 Et Abiathar apprit à David que Saül avait fait périr tous les prêtres du Seigneur.

And told him that Saul had slain the priests of the Lord.

22 Et David dit à Abiathar: J'avais prévu, ce jour-là, que Doeg le Syrien dirait tout à Saül. Je suis cause de la mort de ton père et de sa famille.

And David said to Abiathar: I knew that day when Doeg the Edomite was there, that without doubt he would tell Saul: I have been the occasion of the death of all the souls of thy father’s house.

23 Demeure avec moi, n'aie point de crainte; car partout où je chercherai à mettre en sûreté ma vie, je chercherai à mettre en sûreté la tienne, puisque tu t'es placé sous ma garde.

Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life, seeketh thy life also, and with me thou shalt be saved.
