1 Samuel 15
1 Et Samuel dit à Saül: Le Seigneur m'a jadis envoyé pour t'oindre roi d'Israël; maintenant, écoute la voix du Seigneur.
And Samuel said unto Saul, Me did the Lord send to anoint thee as king over his people, over Israel; and now hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the Lord.
2 Voici ce que dit le Seigneur sabaoth: Je veux tirer vengeance de ce qu'a fait Amalec contre Israël lorsqu'il est venu à sa rencontre sur sa voie, comme il revenait d'Égypte.
Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, I remember what Amalek did to Israel, how he lay in wait for him on the way, when he came up from Egypt.
3 Marche donc, et tu frapperas Amalec et Hiérim, et ce qui lui appartient; tu ne t'en approprieras rien, tu extermineras tout. Amalec sera anathème avec tout ce qui lui appartient; tu n'en épargneras aucune chose. Tu mettras à mort hommes et femmes, nourrissons et nourrices, bœufs et brebis, chamelles et ânesses.
Now go and smite 'Amalek, and devote all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and lamb, camel and ass.
4 Et Saül convoqua le peuple, et il passa en revue, à Galgala, quatre cent mille combattants, outre trente mille hommes de Juda.
And Saul ordered the people to assemble, and he numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand men on foot, and ten thousand of the men of Judah.
5 Puis, Saül marcha sur la ville d'Amalec, et il se mit en embuscade dans le torrent.
And Saul came to the city of 'Amalek, and he fought in the valley.
6 Et Saül dit au Cénéen: Éloigne-toi et te sépare des Amalécites, de peur que je ne te confonde avec eux, car tu as été miséricordieux pour les fils d'Israël quand ils revenaient d'Égypte. Et le Cénéen se sépara d'Amalec.
And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from the midst of the 'Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; whereas ye acted kindly with all the children of Israel, at their coming up out of Egypt. And the Kenites departed from the midst of the 'Amalekites.
7 Et Saül battit Amalec, depuis Evilat jusqu'à Sur, en face de l'Égypte.
And Saul smote the 'Amalekites from Chavilah until thou comest to Shur, that is before Egypt.
8 Il prit vivant Agag, roi d'Amalec, et il passa au fil de l'épée tout le peuple, tout Hiérim.
And he caught Agag the king of the 'Amalekites alive, and all the people he devoted to the edge of the sword.
9 Mais Saül et tout le peuple laissèrent vivre Agag; ils épargnèrent ce qu'il y avait de meilleur parmi ses brebis, ses bœufs, ses vivres, le vin de ses vignes, tous ses biens; ils résolurent de ne les point détruire, et ils détruisirent toutes les choses viles ou de peu de valeur.
But Saul together with the people had pity on Agag, and on the best of the flocks, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the fat lambs, and all that was good, and they would not destroy them; but all the cattle that was of little value and weak, that they destroyed.
10 Et la parole du Seigneur vint à Samuel, disant:
And the word of the Lord came unto Samuel, saying,
11 Je me reproche d'avoir fait roi Saül, parce qu'il a cessé de me suivre, et qu'il n'a point observé mes ordres; Samuel en fut abattu, et il cria toute la nuit au Seigneur.
I repent that I have set up Saul as king; for he hath turned back from following me, and my word hath he not performed: and it displeased Samuel, and he cried unto the Lord all the night.
12 Et Samuel se leva de grand matin; dès l'aurore, il partit à la rencontre d'Israël. On l'alla rapporter à Saül, disant: Samuel est arrivé au mont Carmel; il a levé une poignée d'hommes. A ce moment, Samuel tourna son char, et il descendit à Galgala vers Saül, comme celui-ci offrait en holocauste au Seigneur les prémices des dépouilles qu'il avait amenées d'Amalec.
And Samuel rose up early to meet Saul in the morning; and it was told to Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set himself up a monument, and then went about, and passed on, and went down to Gilgal.
13 Samuel s'approcha de Saül, et Saül lui dit: Béni sois-tu au nom du Seigneur, j'ai fait tout ce qu'a ordonné le Seigneur.
And Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou unto the Lord, I have performed the word of the Lord.
14 Mais Samuel dit à Saül: Quels sont donc ces bêlements de brebis qui parviennent à mes oreilles, et ces mugissements de bœufs que je viens d'entendre?
And Samuel said, What is then this bleating of the flocks in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?
15 Et Saül lui dit: J'ai amené ce bétail d'Amalec; le peuple a épargné les plus belles têtes pour les sacrifier au Seigneur; j'ai détruit tout le reste.
And Saul said, From the 'Amalekites have they brought them; because the people had pity on the best of the flocks and of the oxen, in order to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God; and the rest have we destroyed.
16 Alors, Samuel dit à Saül: Permets, je vais te dévoiler ce que cette nuit m'a dit le Seigneur. Et Saül répondit: Parle.
And Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the Lord said to me this night: and he said unto him, Speak.
17 Et Samuel dit à Saül: N'es-tu point petit à ses yeux, toi qui règnes sur les tribus d'Israël? C'est le Seigneur qui t'a sacré roi.
And Samuel said, Is it not that, however little thou wast in thy own eyes, thou art the head of the tribes of Israel? and the Lord anointed thee as king over Israel?
18 Et le Seigneur t'a envoyé contre Amalec, et il t'a dit: Marche, et extermine. Mets à mort ce peuple qui a péché contre moi; fais-lui la guerre jusqu'à ce que tu l'aies détruit.
And the Lord sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and destroy the sinners, the 'Amalekites, and thou shalt fight against them until they be consumed.
19 Pourquoi donc n'as-tu pas été docile à la voix du Seigneur? Pourquoi as- tu pris sur toi de disposer du butin? Pourquoi as-tu fait le mal devant le Seigneur?
Wherefore then didst thou not hearken unto the voice of the Lord, and didst fly upon the spoil, and didst the evil in the eyes of the Lord?
20 C'est, reprit Saül, pour avoir écouté la clameur du peuple; je suivais la voie que m'avait indiquée le Seigneur; j'avais fait prisonnier Agag, et exterminé Amalec;
And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have fully hearkened unto the voice of the Lord; and I went on the way which the Lord had sent me; and I have brought Agag the king of 'Amalek; and the 'Amalekites have I destroyed.
21 Mais le peuple prit des dépouilles ce qu'il y avait de meilleur, parmi les brebis et les bœufs, pour les sacrifier, en Galgala, au Seigneur notre Dieu.
And the people took of the spoil, of the flocks and oxen, the chief of the devoted things, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God in Gilgal.
22 Les holocaustes, dit Samuel, et les victimes sont-ils plus agréables au Seigneur que l'obéissance à sa voix? La docilité vaut mieux que les offrandes; l'obéissance vaut mieux que la graisse des béliers.
And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as much delight in burnt-offerings and in sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to attend more than the fat of the rams.
23 La désobéissance est un péché comme la divination; les theraphim amènent peines et douleurs. Parce que tu as dédaigné la parole du Seigneur, le Seigneur te rejettera du trône d'Israël.
For the sin of witchcraft is rebellion, and idolatry and image-worship, stubbornness; inasmuch as thou hast despised the word of the Lord, he hath also despised thee that thou shalt not be king.
24 J'ai péché, répondit Saül, en transgressant l'ordre du Seigneur et le tien; j'ai eu crainte du peuple, et j'ai écouté sa clameur.
And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned; for I have transgressed the will of the Lord, and thy words; because I feared the people, and I hearkened to their voice.
25 Maintenant, ôte-moi mon péché, reviens avec moi, et j'adorerai le Seigneur ton Dieu.
And now, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and return with me, that I may prostrate myself to the Lord.
26 Mais Samuel dit à Saül: Je ne reviendrai plus vers toi; parce que tu as méprisé la parole du Seigneur, le Seigneur te méprisera; tu ne seras plus roi d'Israël.
And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee; for thou didst despise the word of the Lord, and the Lord hath despised thee, that thou shalt not be king over Israel.
27 Et Samuel se retourna pour partir, mais Saül saisit le pan de son double manteau, et il le déchira.
And Samuel turned about to go: and he laid hold on the corner of his mantle, and it was rent.
28 Et Samuel lui dit: Le Seigneur, par tes mains, a déchiré aujourd'hui ta royauté en Israël; il la donnera à ton prochain qui vaut mieux que toi.
And Samuel said unto him, The Lord hath rent the kingdom of Israel from off thee this day, and hath given it to thy associate, who is better than thou.
29 Israël aussi sera déchiré en deux parts; le Seigneur ne changera pas, et il ne se repentira pas; car il n'est point comme un homme pour se repentir.
And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent.
30 Et Saül dit: J'ai péché; mais ne laisse pas de m'honorer devant les anciens d'Israël et devant mon peuple; viens-t'en avec moi, et j'adorerai ton Dieu.
And he said, I have sinned; [yet] honor me now, I pray thee, in the presence of the elders of my people, and in the presence of Israel, and return with me, that I may prostrate myself unto the Lord thy God.
31 Et Samuel revint auprès de Saül, et celui-ci adora le Seigneur.
So Samuel returned, following Saul; and Saul prostrated himself to the Lord.
32 Samuel dit ensuite: Amenez-moi Agag, roi d'Amalec; et Agag arriva tout tremblant. Et Agag dit: Faut-il que la mort soit si amère?
And Samuel said, Bring ye hither unto me Agag the king of the 'Amalekites: and Agag came unto him cheerfully; and Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.
33 Et Samuel dit à Agag: De même que par ton glaive les femmes sont restées sans enfants, ta mère, parmi les femmes, tout à l'heure n'aura plus d'enfant. Et Samuel égorgea Agag devant le Seigneur, à Galgala.
And Samuel said, As thy sword did make women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women; and Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.
34 Puis, Samuel retourna en Armathem, et Saül partit pour sa demeure à Gabaa.
Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house at Gib'ah of Saul.
35 Et Samuel cessa de visiter Saül jusqu'au jour de sa mort; mais il pleurait sur lui, parce que le Seigneur s'était repenti d'avoir fait Saül roi d'Israël.
And Samuel did not see Saul any more until the day of his death; because Samuel mourned for Saul; and the Lord repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
