1 Samuel 13
1 Après cela, Saül choisit trois mille hommes, parmi ceux d'Israël. Il y en eut avec lui deux mille à Machmas et en la montagne de Béthel, et avec Jonathan mille, à Gabaa en Benjamin. Le reste du peuple fut congédié, et chacun retourna en sa demeure.
Saul was...years old when he became king; and he reigned two years over Israel.
2 Après cela, Saül choisit trois mille hommes, parmi ceux d'Israël. Il y en eut avec lui deux mille à Machmas et en la montagne de Béthel, et avec Jonathan mille, à Gabaa en Benjamin. Le reste du peuple fut congédié, et chacun retourna en sa demeure.
And Saul chose him three thousand men out of Israel: there were with Saul two thousand in Michmash and in mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin; and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.
3 Jonathan battit le Nasib, étranger qui demeurait sur la colline; les Philistins l'apprirent, et Saül fit retentir la trompette en toute la terre promise, disant: Les esclaves secouent le joug.
And Jonathan smote the outpost of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard [of it]. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.
4 Et tout Israël écouta ceux qui publiaient: Saül a détruit le Nasib étranger; et Israël se souleva contre les Philistins, et tous les fils d'Israël suivirent Saül en Galgala.
And all Israel heard say, Saul has smitten the garrison of the Philistines, and Israel also has become odious to the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.
5 Cependant, les Philistins se réunirent pour porter la guerre en Israël; ils firent marcher contre Israël trente mille chars, six mille cavaliers et des piétons nombreux comme le sable de la mer; ils campèrent à Machmas, en face de Béthoron du Midi.
And the Philistines were assembled together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea-shore in multitude; and they came up, and encamped in Michmash, eastward from Beth-Aven.
6 Or, Israël vit qu'il était trop faible pour les aborder; et le peuple se cacha dans les cavernes, dans les lieux fermés, dans les rochers, dans les puits, dans les citernes.
And the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed); and the people hid themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in cliffs, and in strongholds, and in pits.
7 Ceux qui avaient passé le Jourdain le traversèrent encore pour se réfugier dans les territoires de Gad et de Galaad. Et Saül était encore à Galgala, et toute la troupe qui le suivait était frappée d'effroi.
And the Hebrews went over the Jordan into the land of Gad and Gilead. And Saul was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
8 Il laissa écouler sept jours, comme le lui avait dit Samuel; mais Samuel ne vint pas le trouver en Galgala, et la troupe qui l'entourait se dispersa.
And he waited seven days, according to the set time that Samuel [had appointed]; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
9 Et Saül dit: Amenez ici des victimes pour que je prépare un holocauste et des hosties pacifiques; puis, il offrit l'holocauste.
And Saul said, Bring hither to me the burnt-offering and the peace-offerings. And he offered up the burnt-offering.
10 Comme il achevait le sacrifice, Samuel arriva, et Saül sortit à sa rencontre afin de lui rendre hommage.
And it came to pass, as soon as he had ended offering up the burnt-offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.
11 Et Samuel dit: Qu'as-tu fait? Et Saül répondit: J'ai vu que le peuple autour de moi se dispersait, que tu n'étais point venu au temps indiqué, et que les Philistins étaient réunis à Machmas,
And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou didst not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines were assembled at Michmash,
12 Et j'ai dit: Maintenant les Philistins vont descendre sur moi à Galgala et je n'ai point prié devant le Seigneur: je me suis donc résolu à offrir l'holocauste.
I said, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to Jehovah; and I forced myself, and offered up the burnt-offering.
13 Et Samuel dit à Saül: Tu as agi en insensé, car tu n'as point obéi à mon ordre, à l'ordre du Seigneur, au moment où le Seigneur t'avait préparé sur son peuple une royauté perpétuelle.
And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of Jehovah thy God which he commanded thee; for now would Jehovah have established thy kingdom over Israel for ever.
14 Maintenant donc cette royauté ne te restera pas, et Dieu se cherchera un homme selon son cœur; et le Seigneur le chargera de gouverner son peuple, parce que tu n'as pas observé le commandement du Seigneur.
But now thy kingdom shall not continue: Jehovah has sought him a man after his own heart, and Jehovah has appointed him ruler over his people; for thou hast not kept what Jehovah commanded thee.
15 Et Samuel partit, il quitta Galgala, et ce qu'il y avait encore là de peuple suivit Saül pour rejoindre les hommes de guerre. Quand ils furent arrivés de Galgala en Gabaa, Saül passa en revue la troupe qui se trouvait avec lui; elle était réduite à six cents hommes.
And Samuel arose and went up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were found with him, about six hundred men.
16 Et Saül, avec son fils Jonathan et la troupe qui les avait suivis, s'arrêta à Gabaa en Benjamin, où tous pleurèrent; cependant les Philistins étaient campés à Machmas.
And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were found with them, abode in Geba of Benjamin; and the Philistines encamped in Michmash.
17 Et ceux-ci, portant avec eux le ravage, sortirent de leur camp en trois troupes: l'une prit le chemin de Gophera sur le territoire de Sogal.
And the ravagers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned the way of Ophrah, into the land of Shual;
18 Une autre prit la route de Béthoron; la troisième, le chemin de Gabaa, qui fait un détour vers Haï des Sabim.
and another company turned the way to Beth-horon; and the other company turned the way to the district that looks over the ravine of Zeboim toward the wilderness.
19 Et, sur tout le territoire d'Israël, on ne trouvait pas un seul forgeron, parce que les Philistins avaient dit: Il ne faut pas que les Hébreux fabriquent lance ou épée.
Now there was no smith found throughout the land of Israel; for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears.
20 Et tout Israël descendait chez les Philistins pour forger chacun sa faucille, ses outils, sa hache ou sa faux.
And all Israel went down to the Philistines, every man to get his ploughshare, and his hoe, and his axe, and his sickle sharpened,
21 On était près de vendanger; or, pour un outil à dents, il fallait payer trois sicles, et autant pour une hache ou pour une faux.
when the edges of the sickles, and the hoes, and the forks, and the axes were blunted; and to set the goads.
22 Et, dans les jours de la guerre de Machmas, on ne trouva pas une épée ni une lance dans la main de l'un des fils d'Israël qui accompagnaient Saül et Jonathan; on n'en eût trouvé que dans les mains du roi et de son fils.
And it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan; but with Saul and with Jonathan his son there was found.
23 Cependant, des Philistins étaient sortis du côté opposé au camp de Machmas.
And a garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.
