1 Et Hiram, roi de Tyr, envoya ses serviteurs, sachant que Salomon avait été oint à la place de David, son père; car Hiram avait aimé David tous les jours de sa vie.
And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon, for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the place of his father, for Hiram was ever a devotee of David.
2 Salomon envoya aussi des messagers à Hiram, disant:
And Solomon sent to Hiram, saying,
3 Tu sais que David, mon père, n'a pu bâtir un temple au nom du Seigneur mon Dieu, à cause des guerres qui ont éclaté tout alentour, jusqu'à ce que le Seigneur eût abattu ses ennemis sous la plante de ses pieds.
Thou know how that David my father could not build a house for the name of Jehovah his God for the wars which were about him on every side, until Jehovah put them under the soles of his feet.
4 Maintenant, le Seigneur mon Dieu m'a donné la paix tout alentour; il n'est point de complot contre moi ni de mauvais desseins.
But now Jehovah my God has given me rest on every side; there is neither adversary, nor evil occurrence.
5 Et voilà que j'ai résolu de bâtir un temple au nom du Seigneur mon Dieu, comme le Seigneur Dieu l'a dit à David mon père: C'est ton fils, que je mettrai sur le trône à ta place, qui bâtira un temple à mon nom.
And, behold, I purpose to build a house for the name of Jehovah my God, as Jehovah spoke to David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy place, he shall build the house for my name.
6 Donne donc tes ordres, et que l'on coupe des arbres du Liban; voici mes serviteurs pour aider les tiens, et je te paierai le salaire de tes services comme tu le demanderas; car tu sais que parmi nous personne n'est aussi habile que les Sidoniens à travailler le bois.
Now therefore command thou that they cut for me cedar trees out of Lebanon. And my servants shall be with thy servants. And I will give thee wages for thy servants according to all that thou shall say, for thou know that there is not among us any that knows how to cut timber like the Sidonians.
7 Or, Hiram fut grandement réjoui d'entendre ces paroles, et il dit: Béni soit aujourd'hui le Seigneur, qui a donné à David un fils aussi sage pour gouverner ce peuple nombreux.
And it came to pass, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be Jehovah this day, who has given to David a wise son over this great people.
8 Puis, il envoya dire à Salomon: J'ai ouï toutes les choses au sujet desquelles tu as envoyé près de moi; je ferai tout ce que tu veux; cèdres et sapins,
And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, I have heard that which thou have sent to me. I will do all thy desire concerning timber of cedar, and concerning timber of fir.
9 Mes serviteurs transporteront tout du Liban à la mer; on en formera des radeaux jusqu'au lieu que tu m'indiqueras; là, je les ferai délier, et tu les enlèveras, et tu feras tout ce que je désire en donnant des vivres à ma maison.
My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon to the sea. And I will make them into rafts to go by sea to the place that thou shall appoint me, and will cause them to be broken up there, and thou shall receive them. And thou shall accomplish my desire in giving food for my household.
10 Hiram donna donc à Salomon des cèdres, des sapins et tout ce qu'il voulut.
So Hiram gave Solomon timber of cedar and timber of fir according to all his desire.
11 Et Salomon donna à Hiram vingt mille mesures de froment pour alimenter sa maison, et vingt mille mesures d'huile battue; voilà ce que Salomon donna par an à Hiram.
And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat for food to his household, and twenty measures of pure oil; thus Solomon gave to Hiram year by year.
12 Or, le Seigneur avait donné à Salomon la sagesse comme il le lui avait dit. Et la paix régnait entre Hiram et Salomon, qui contractèrent entre eux une alliance.
And Jehovah gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him. And there was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and the two made a league together.
13 Le roi imposa une corvée à tout Israël, et il requit pour ce service trente mille hommes.
And king Solomon raised a conscription out of all Israel, and the conscription was thirty thousand men.
14 Il les fit partir pour le Liban, dix mille par dix mille qui se relevaient mois par mois; ils passaient un mois au Liban et deux mois chez eux. Adoniram était à leur tête.
And he sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month by courses. They were in Lebanon a month, and at home two months. And Adoniram was over the men subject to task work.
15 Et Salomon employait soixante-dix mille hommes à transporter les matériaux, et quatre-vingt mille à tailler des pierres dans la montagne,
And Solomon had seventy thousand who bore burdens, and eighty thousand who were hewers in the mountains,
16 Sans compter les conducteurs des travaux; il y en avait trois mille six cents habiles à ces sortes d'œuvres.
besides Solomon's chief officers who were over the work: three thousand and three hundred who bore rule over the people that labored in the work.
17 Et l'on mit trois ans à préparer les pierres et les bois.
And the king commanded, and they hewed out great stones, costly stones, to lay the foundation of the house with shaped stone.
18 Et l'on mit trois ans à préparer les pierres et les bois.
And Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders and the Gebalites fashioned them, and prepared the timber and the stones to build the house.
