1 Mais le peuple sacrifiait encore sur les hauts lieux, parce que le temple du Seigneur n'était pas encore bâti.
And the wisdom of Solomon abounded exceedingly beyond the wisdom of all the ancients, and beyond all the wise men of Egypt: and he took the daughter of Pharao, and brought her into the city of David, until he had finished building his own house, and the house of the Lord first, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.
2 Mais le peuple sacrifiait encore sur les hauts lieux, parce que le temple du Seigneur n'était pas encore bâti.
Nevertheless the people burnt incense on the high places, because a house had not yet been built to the Lord.
3 Or, Salomon aimait le Seigneur, et marchait en la voie des commandements du roi David son père; seulement il sacrifiait et encensait sur, les hauts lieux.
And Solomon loved the Lord, [so as] to walk in the ordinances of David his father; only he sacrificed and burnt incense on the high places.
4 Et il partit pour Gabaon, afin d'y offrir un sacrifice; car c'était le lieu le plus élevé et le plus célèbre. Salomon offrit en holocauste mille victimes sur l'autel de Gabaon.
And he arose and went to Gabaon to sacrifice there, for that [was] the highest place, and great: Solomon offered a whole-burnt-offering of a thousand [victims] on the altar in Gabaon.
5 Et la nuit venue, le Seigneur apparut à Salomon pendant son sommeil, et le Seigneur lui dit: Demande-moi quelque chose pour toi.
And the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and the Lord said to Solomon, Ask some petition for thyself.
6 Et Salomon répondit: Vous avez usé d'une grande miséricorde envers mon père David votre serviteur, parce qu'il avait marché devant vous dans les voies de la vérité et de la justice, et dans la droiture du cœur. Et gardant envers lui cette grande miséricorde, vous avez fait monter son fils sur le trône où il est aujourd'hui.
And Solomon said, Thou hast dealt very mercifully with thy servant David my father according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee, and thou hast kept for him this great mercy, to set his son upon his throne, as [it is] this day.
7 Vous venez, Seigneur mon Dieu, de mettre à la place de David mon père, moi votre serviteur, moi qui suis encore un jeune adolescent, et qui ne sais encore ni entrer, ni sortir.
And now, O Lord my God, thou hast appointed thy servant in the room of David my father; and I am a little child, and know not my going out an my coming in.
8 Et votre serviteur se trouve au milieu de votre peuple, du peuple nombreux que vous vous êtes choisi, d'un peuple innombrable.
But thy servant [is] in the midst of thy people, whom thou hast chosen, a great people, which as this day cannot be numbered.
9 Donnez donc à votre serviteur un cœur qui écoute, qui juge votre peuple selon la justice, et qui sache discerner le bien et le mal; car qui pourrait juger votre peuple, ce peuple puissant?
Thou shalt give therefore to thy servant a heart to hear and to judge thy people justly, and to discern between good and evil: for who will be able to judge this thy great people?
10 Et il fut agréable au Seigneur que Salomon eût fait cette demande.
And it was pleasing before the Lord, that Solomon asked this thing.
11 Et le Seigneur lui dit: Parce que tu m'as demandé cette chose, et que tu ne m'as pas demandé pour toi de longs jours, que tu ne m'as pas demandé des richesses, que tu ne m'as pas demandé la mort de tes ennemis, mais que tu m'as demandé pour toi la sagesse, afin de discerner ce qui est juste,
And the Lord said to him, Because thou hast asked this thing of me, and hast not asked for thyself long life, and hast not asked wealth, nor hast asked the lives of thine enemies, but hast asked for thyself understanding to hear judgment;
12 J'ai déjà fait selon ta parole: voilà que je t'ai doué d'un cœur prudent et sage; il n'a existé avant toi personne qui te ressemble, et après toi, on ne verra jamais ton semblable.
behold, I have done according to thy word: behold, I have given thee an understanding and wise heart: there has not been [any one] like thee before thee, and after thee there shall not arise one like thee.
13 Je t'ai donné, en outre, ce que tu n'as pas demandé, la richesse et la gloire, au point que nul des rois ne t'a jamais égalé.
And I have given thee what thou hast not asked, wealth and glory, so that there has not been any one like thee among kings.
14 Si tu marches en ma voie comme a marché David ton père, en gardant mes commandements et mes ordonnances, je t'accorderai, de plus, de longs jours.
And if thou wilt walk in my way, to keep my commandments and my ordinances, as David thy father walked, then will I multiply thy days.
15 Et Salomon s'éveilla, et il n'oublia point ce songe; il se leva, et rentra dans Jérusalem; il se plaça debout devant l'autel et devant l'arche du Seigneur en Sion; puis, il sacrifia des holocaustes et des hosties pacifiques; enfin il fit préparer un grand festin pour lui-même et pour tous ses serviteurs.
And Solomon awoke, and, behold, [it was] a dream: and he arose and came to Jerusalem, and stood before the altar that was in front of the ark of the covenant of the Lord in Sion: and he offered whole-burnt-offerings, and sacrificed peace-offerings, and made a great banquet for himself and all his servants.
16 Alors, deux femmes prostituées apparurent en présence du roi, et elles se tinrent debout devant lui.
Then there appeared two harlots before the king, and they stood before him.
17 L'une des deux femmes dit: Je te prie, Seigneur: Moi et cette femme nous habitons la même maison, et dans cette maison nous avons enfanté.
And the one woman said, Hear me, [my] lord; I and this woman dwelt in one house, and we were delivered in the house.
18 Trois jours après que je fus accouchée, cette femme est accouchée aussi; nous étions ensemble, et il n'y avait personne que nous deux dans la maison.
And it came to pass on the third day after I was delivered, this woman also was delivered: and we [were] together; and there was no one with us besides our two selves in the house.
19 Or, l'enfant de cette femme est mort la nuit dernière, parce qu'elle s'était couchée sur lui.
And this woman's child died in the night; because she overlaid it.
20 Et elle s'est levée au milieu de la nuit; et elle a pris mon enfant dans mes bras, et elle l'a mis en son sein; et son fils mort elle l'a placé en mon sein.
and she arose in the middle of the night, and took my son from my arms, and laid him in her bosom, and laid her dead son in my bosom.
21 Je me suis réveillée de grand matin pour allaiter mon fils, et l'enfant était mort; or, comme je le regardais bien attentivement aux premières lueurs du jour, je vis que ce n'était pas le fils que j'avais enfanté.
and I arose in the morning to suckle my son, and he was dead: and, behold, I considered him in the morning, and, behold, it was not my son whom I bore.
22 L'autre femme s'écria: Du tout, mais mon fils est vivant, c'est ton fils qui est mort. Et elles parlaient ainsi devant le roi.
And the other woman said, No, but the living [is] my son, and the dead [is] thy son. So they spoke before the king.
23 Et le roi dit à l'une: Tu dis: Celui-ci, le vivant, est mon fils, et le fils de cette femme est mort; puis il dit à l'autre: Tu dis: Du tout, mais mon fils est vivant, et c'est ton fils qui est mort.
and the king said to them, Thou sayest, This [is] my son, [even] the living [one], and this woman's son [is] the dead one: and thou sayest, No, but the living [is] my son, and the dead [is] thy son.
24 Et le roi ajouta: Que l'on prenne un glaive. Et l'on apporta un glaive devant le roi.
And the king said, Fetch a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.
25 Et le roi dit: Coupez en deux cet enfant vivant qui est à la mamelle, donnez-en la moitié à celle-ci, la moitié à celle-là.
And the king said, Divide the live child, the suckling, in two; and give half of it to one, and half of it to the other.
26 Et la femme à qui était l'enfant vivant se hâta de parler au roi, car ses entrailles étaient troublées à cause de son fils, et elle dit: Je te prie, Seigneur, qu'on lui donne l'enfant, qu'on ne le fasse pas mourir. Mais l'autre dit: Qu'il ne soit ni pour elle, ni pour moi, partagez-le.
And the woman whose the living child was, answered and said to the king, (for her bowels yearned over her son) and she said, I pray thee, [my] lord, give her the child, and in nowise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor hers; divide [it].
27 Et le roi prit la parole, et il dit: Donnez l'enfant à celle qui a dit: Donnez-lui l'enfant, ne le faites pas mourir; celle-là est sa mère.
Then the king answered and said, Give the child to her that said, 'Give it to her, and by no means slay it:' she [is] its mother.
28 Et tout Israël citât le jugement qu'avait rendu le roi, et ils eurent crainte du roi, car ils virent que la sagesse de Dieu était en lui quand il rendait la justice.
and all Israel heard this judgment which the king judged, and they feared before the king; because they saw that the wisdom of God [was] in him, to execute judgment.
