1 Et Naboth le Jezraélite avait une vigne attenante à l'aire d'Achab, roi de Samarie.
Then Ben-hadad the King of Aram assembled all his armie, and two and thirtie Kings with him, with horses, and charets, and went vp and besieged Samaria, and fought against it.
2 Et Achab parla à Naboth, disant: Donne-moi ta vigne, j'en ferai mon jardin potager, car elle près de ma demeure; je te donnerai une vigne meilleure que la tienne. Si tu le préfères, je te donnerai de l'argent pour prix de ta vigne, et elle sera mon jardin potager.
And he sent messengers to Ahab King of Israel, into the citie,
3 Mais, Nabaoth dit à Achab: Dieu me préserve de te donner l'héritage de mon père.
And sayd vnto him, Thus sayth Ben-hadad, Thy siluer and thy golde is mine: also thy women, and thy fayre children are mine.
4 Et l'esprit d'Achab fut troublé; il s'étendit sur sa couche, se voila le visage, et ne mangea pas de pain.
And the King of Israel answered, and sayd, My lord King, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I haue.
5 Et Jézabel sa femme entra vers lui, et elle lui dit: D'où vient que tu as l'esprit troublé, et que tu ne manges pas de pain?
And when the messengers came againe, they said, Thus commandeth Ben-hadad, and saith, When I shall send vnto thee, and command, thou shalt deliuer me thy siluer and thy golde, and thy women, and thy children,
6 Il lui répondit: C'est parce que j'ai parlé à Naboth le Jezraélite, disant: Donne-moi à prix d'argent ta vigne, ou, si tu veux, je te donnerai en échange une autre vigne, et qu'il m'a répondu: Je ne te donnerai pas l'héritage de mon père.
Or els I will sende my seruants vnto thee by to morow this time: and they shall search thine house, and the houses of thy seruants: and whatsoeuer is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall take it in their handes, and bring it away.
7 Jézabel sa femme lui dit: Conduis-toi donc en roi envers Israël, lève- toi, mange du pain, reviens à toi, et moi je te donnerai la vigne de Naboth le Jezraélite.
Then the King of Israel sent for all the Elders of the land, and sayd, Take heede, I pray you, and see how he seeketh mischiefe: for he sent vnto me for my wiues, and for my children, and for my siluer, and for my golde, and I denyed him not.
8 Ensuite, elle écrivit au nom d'Achab une lettre qu'elle scella du sceau royal, et elle l'envoya aux anciens et aux premiers de la ville qui demeuraient avec Naboth.
And all the Elders, and all the people sayd to him, Hearken not vnto him, nor consent.
9 Or, elle avait écrit ceci dans la lettre: Ordonnez un jeûne et faites asseoir Naboth parmi les premiers du peuple.
Wherefore hee sayde vnto the messengers of Ben-hadad, Tell my lorde the King, All that thou didddest sende for to thy seruant at the first time, that I will doe, but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him an answere.
10 Puis, devant lui, apostez deux hommes, fils de pervers, qui portent témoignage contre lui, disant: Il a blasphémé contre Dieu et le roi, qu'on l'emmène, qu'on le lapide, qu'il meure.
And Ben-hadad sent vnto him, and sayde, The gods do so to me and more also, if the dust of Samaria be ynough to all the people that follow me, for euery man an handfull.
11 Et les hommes de sa ville, les anciens et les plus riches qui demeuraient avec lui, firent comme avait dit Jézabel dans la lettre qu'elle leur avait envoyée.
And the King of Israel answered, and sayd, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth his harneis, boast himselfe, as he that putteth it off.
12 Ils ordonnèrent un jeûne, ils firent asseoir Naboth parmi les chefs du peuple,
And when he heard that tidings, as he was with the Kings drinking in the pauilions, he sayd vnto his seruants, Bring forth your engines, and they set them against the citie.
13 Et les deux hommes, fils de pervers, entrèrent, et ils s'assirent devant Naboth, et ils portèrent témoignage contre lui, disant: Tu as blasphémé contre Dieu et le roi. Et on l'emmena hors de la ville, on le lapida, et il mourut.
And beholde, there came a Prophet vnto Ahab King of Israel, saying, Thus sayeth the Lord, Hast thou seene all this great multitude? beholde, I will deliuer it into thine hande this day, that thou mayest knowe, that I am the Lord.
14 Puis, on envoya un message à Jézabel, disant: Naboth a été lapidé et il est mort.
And Ahab sayd, By whome? And he sayde, Thus sayth the Lord, By the seruants of the princes of the prouinces. He sayde againe, Who shall order the battel? And he answered, Thou.
15 Dès que Jézabel eut ouï le message, elle dit à Achab: Lève-toi, hérite de la vigne de Naboth le Jezraélite, qui n'a point voulu te la donner à prix d'argent; car Naboth n'est plus vivant, il est mort.
Then he nombred the seruantes of the princes of the prouinces, and they were two hundreth, two and thirtie: and after them he nombred the whole people of all the children of Israel, euen seuen thousand.
16 Dès qu'Achab ouït que Naboth le Jezraélite était mort, il déchira ses vêtements et se couvrit d'un cilice; mais ensuite, il se leva, et il alla à la vigne de Naboth pour en prendre possession.
And they went out at noone: but Ben-hadad did drinke till he was drunken in the tentes, both he and the Kings: for two and thirtie Kings helped him.
17 Et le Seigneur parla à Elie le Thesbite, disant:
So the seruants of the princes of the prouinces went out first: and Ben-hadad sent out, and they shewed him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria.
18 Lève-toi, va trouver Achab, roi d'Israël, à Samarie, car il est dans la vigne de Naboth; il y est allé pour en prendre possession.
And he sayde, Whether they be come out for peace, take them aliue: or whether they bee come out to fight, take them yet aliue.
19 Et tu lui parleras, disant: Voici que dit le Seigneur: Comme tu as tué et hérité, voici, à cause de cela, ce que dit le Seigneur: En tout lieu où les chiens et les pourceaux ont léché le sang de Naboth, les chiens lécheront ton sang, et les prostituées se baigneront dans ton sang.
So they came out of the citie, to wit, the seruants of the princes of the prouinces, and the hoste which followed them.
20 Et Achab dit à Elie: Tu m'as donc trouvé, ô mon ennemi? Le prophète répondit: Je t'ai trouvé, en ce que tu t'es follement vendu pour faire le mal devant le Seigneur, et l'irriter.
And they slew euery one his enemie: and the Aramites fled, and Israel pursued them: but Ben-hadad ye King of Aram escaped on an horse with his horsemen.
21 Et c'est moi qui ferai fondre sur toi les malheurs, qui, allumerai le feu après toi, qui détruirai tout mâle de la maison d'Achab, tout ce qui est enfermé, tout ce qui reste encore en Israël.
And the King of Israel went out, and smote the horses and charets, and with a great slaughter slew he the Aramites.
22 Et je ferai de ta maison ce que j'ai fait de la maison de Jéroboam, fils de Nabat, et de la maison de Baasa, fils d'Achias, parce que tu m'as irrité et que tu as fait tomber dans le péché tout Israël.
(For there had come a Prophet to the King of Israel, and had sayd vnto him, Goe, be of good courage, and consider, and take heede what thou doest: for when the yeere is gone about, the King of Aram wil come vp against thee)
23 Ensuite, le Seigneur s'adressant à Jézabel lui dit: Les chiens te dévoreront dans les murs de Jezraël;
Then the seruants of the King of Aram said vnto him, Their gods are gods of the moutaines, and therefore they ouercame vs: but let vs fight against them in the playne, and doubtlesse we shall ouercome them.
24 Celui de la maison d'Achab qui mourra dans la ville, les chiens le dévoreront; celui qui mourra dans les champs, sera dévoré par les oiseaux du ciel.
And this doe, Take the Kings away, euery one out of his place, and place captaines for them.
25 Quant à Achab, il a follement agi en se vendant pour faire le mal devant le Seigneur, perverti par sa femme Jézabel.
And nomber thy selfe an armie, like the armie that thou hast lost, with such horses, and such charets, and we wil fight against them in the plaine, and doubtlesse we shall ouercome them: and he hearkened vnto their voyce, and did so.
26 Il s'est rendu très abominable pour avoir marché à la suite des idoles, et imité tout ce que faisait l'Amorrhéen que le Seigneur a exterminé devant la face des fils d'Israël.
And after the yeere was gone about, Ben-hadad nombred the Aramites, and went vp to Aphek to fight against Israel.
27 A ces mots, Achab fut tout contrit devant la face du Seigneur; il s'en alla pleurant; il déchira sa tunique, il se couvrit le corps d'un cilice et il jeûna (il s'était déjà enveloppé d'un cilice le jour où il avait frappé Naboth le Jezraélite); et il s'en alla tout humilié.
And the children of Israel were nombred, and were all assembled and went against them, and the children of Israel pitched before them, like two litle flockes of kiddes: but the Aramites filled the countrey.
28 Et la parole du Seigneur vint encore à son serviteur Elie au sujet d'Achab, et le Seigneur lui dit:
And there came a man of God, and spake vnto the King of Israel, saying, Thus sayeth the Lord, Because the Aramites haue sayd, The Lord is the God of the mountaines, and not God of the valleis, therefore will I deliuer all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the Lord.
29 As-tu vu comme Achab était contrit devant ma face? Je ne ferai point fondre sur lui ces malheurs de son vivant, mais ce sera du vivant de son fils.
And they pitched one ouer against the other seuen dayes, and in the seuenth day the battel was ioyned: and the children of Israel slew of the Aramites an hundreth thousand footemen in one day.
30 Cependant Ben-Ader rassembla toute son armée, partit et assiégea Samarie; il avait avec lui trente-deux rois, toute sa cavalerie et tous ses chars. Et ils se mirent en campagne; ils assiégèrent Samarie, et ils donnèrent l'assaut à ses remparts.
But the rest fled to Aphek into the citie: and there fel a wall vpon seuen and twentie thousand men that were left: and Ben-hadad fled into the citie, and came into a secret chamber.
31 Puis, le roi de Syrie envoya dans la ville dire à Achab, roi d'Israël: Voici ce que dit Ben-Ader:
And his seruants sayd vnto him, Beholde nowe, we haue heard say that the Kings of the house of Israel are mercifull Kings: we pray thee, let vs put sacke cloth about our loynes, and ropes about our heads, and goe out to the King of Israel: it may be that he will saue thy life.
32 Ton argent et ton or m'appartiennent; tes femmes et tes enfants m'appartiennent.
Then they gyrded sackecloth about their loynes, and put ropes about their heads, and came to the King of Israel, and sayd, Thy seruant Ben-hadad sayth, I pray thee, let me liue: and he sayd, Is he yet aliue? he is my brother.
33 Le roi d'Israël répondit: Comme tu l'as dit, ô roi mon maître, je t'appartiens, et toutes les choses que je possède.
Now the men tooke diliget heede, if they could catch any thing of him, and made haste, and sayd, Thy brother Ben-hadad. And he sayd, Go, bring him. So Ben-hadad came out vnto him, and he caused him to come vp vnto the chariot.
34 Les messagers vinrent encore, et ils dirent: Voici ce que dit Ben-Ader: de t'ai envoyé dire: Tu me livreras ton argent et ton or, et tes femmes et tes enfants.
And Ben-hadad sayd vnto him, The cities, which my father tooke from thy father, I wil restore, and thou shalt make streetes for thee in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria. Then said Ahab, I will let thee goe with this couenant. So he made a couenant with him, and let him goe.
35 Demain donc, à pareille heure, j'enverrai près de toi mes serviteurs; ils fouilleront dans ta maison et dans les maisons de tes serviteurs, et ils prendront toutes les choses désirables à leurs yeux, sur lesquelles ils auront mis la main.
Then a certaine man of the children of the Prophets sayd vnto his neighbour by the comandement of the Lord, Smite me, I pray thee. But the man refused to smite him.
36 Alors, le roi d'Israël convoqua tous les anciens de la terre promise, et il dit: Écoutez, voyez quelle lâcheté demande cet homme: il me demande mes femmes, mes fils et mes filles. Quant à mon argent et à mon or, je ne les lui ai point refusés.
Then sayd he vnto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voyce of the Lord, beholde, as soone as thou art departed from me, a lyon shall slay thee. So when he was departed from him, a lyon found him and slew him.
37 Et les anciens et tout le peuple s'écrièrent: Ne l'écoute pas, n'y consens point.
Then he founde another man, and sayde, Smite mee, I pray thee. And the man smote him, and in smiting wounded him.
38 Il dit donc aux messagers de Ben-Ader: Dites à votre maître: Toutes les choses pour lesquelles tu as d'abord envoyé à ton serviteur, je les ferai, mais cette dernière chose je ne puis la faire. Et les hommes partirent, et ils rapportèrent sa réponse à leur maître.
So the Prophet departed, and wayted for the King by the way, and disguised himselfe with ashes vpon his face.
39 Ben-Ader envoya encore à lui, disant: Que le Seigneur me punisse, et qu'il me punisse encore, si votre tanière à renards de Samarie suffit pour contenir les piétons de mon armée.
And when the King came by, he cried vnto the King, and said, Thy seruant went into the middes of the battel: and beholde, there went away a man, whom another man brought vnto me, and sayd, Keepe this man: if he be lost, and want, thy life shall go for his life, or els thou shalt pay a talent of siluer.
40 Le roi d'Israël reprit: C'est assez: que le tortu ne se glorifie pas comme l'homme qui se tient droit.
And as thy seruant had here and there to do, he was gone: And the King of Israel said vnto him, So shall thy iudgement be: thou hast giuen sentence.
41 Lorsque cette réponse fut rapportée au Syrien, il était à boire sous sa tente avec tous les rois ses alliés, et il dit à ses serviteurs: Elevez un retranchement. Ils firent donc un retranchement autour de la ville.
And hee hasted, and tooke the ashes away from his face: and the King of Israel knewe him that he was of the Prophets:
42 Or, voilà qu'un prophète arriva devant Achab, roi d'Israël, et dit: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: As-tu vu cette innombrable multitude? Eh bien! aujourd'hui je te la livre, et tu reconnaîtras que je suis le Seigneur.
And he said vnto him, Thus saith the Lord, Because thou hast let goe out of thine handes a man whom I appoynted to dye, thy life shall goe for his life, and thy people for his people.
43 Et Achab demanda: Par qui? Et le prophète reprit: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Par les jeunes fils des chefs des provinces. Et Achab dit: Qui commencera le combat? Le prophète répondit: Toi.
And the King of Israel went to his house heauie and in displeasure, and came to Samaria.
