1 Chroniques 21
1 Et le diable se leva contre Israël; il excita le roi David à faire le dénombrement du peuple.
And Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel.
2 Le roi dit donc à Joab et aux chefs de l'armée: Allez et faites le dénombrement d'Israël, depuis Dan jusqu'à Bersabée; puis, rapportez-le-moi, et je saurai leur nombre.
And David said to Joab and to the princes of the people: 'Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know the sum of them.'
3 Joab répondit: Puisse le Seigneur ajouter à son peuple et le rendre cent fois aussi nombreux qu'il l'est, et puisse le roi mon maître le voir de ses yeux; puissent le voir aussi les serviteurs de mon maître; mais pourquoi mon maître a-t-il formé ce dessein? Est-ce pour qu'il soit imputé à péché au peuple d'Israël?
And Joab said: 'The LORD make His people a hundred times so many more as they are; but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of guilt unto Israel?'
4 Mais, la volonté du roi prévalut sur Joab, et Joab partit, et il parcourut tout Israël, et il revint à Jérusalem.
Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
5 Et Joab remit à David le dénombrement du peuple qu'il avait recensé: il y avait en tout Israël onze cent mille hommes tirant l'épée, et en Juda étaient quatre cent soixante-dix mille hommes tirant l'épée.
And Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and a hundred thousand men that drew sword; and Judah was four hundred three-score and ten thousand men that drew sword.
6 Et Joab n'avait compté ni Lévi, ni Benjamin, parce qu'il avait cédé à contre-cœur au roi.
But Levi and Benjamin he did not number among them; for the king's word was abominable to Joab.
7 Et la chose fut mauvaise devant Dieu, et il frappa Israël.
And God was displeased with this thing; therefore He smote Israel.
8 Et David dit à Dieu: J'ai gravement péché en ce que je viens de faire, et maintenant remettez à votre serviteur son iniquité, car j'ai commis une insigne folie.
And David said unto God: 'I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing; but now, put away, I beseech Thee, the iniquity of Thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.'
9 Et le Seigneur parla à Gad le voyant, et il lui dit:
And the LORD spoke unto Gad, David's seer, saying:
10 Pars et adresse-toi à David, disant: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Je t'apporte trois choses; choisis pour toi l'une d'elles, et tu l'auras.
'Go and speak unto David, saying: Thus saith the LORD: I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.'
11 Gad alla trouver David, et il lui dit: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur: Choisis pour toi,
So Gad came to David, and said unto him: 'Thus saith the LORD: Take which thou wilt:
12 Ou trois ans de famine, ou trois mois pendant lesquels tu fuiras devant tes ennemis qui te détruiront par le glaive, ou trois jours de mort causée par l'épée du Seigneur en toute cette terre, et par l'ange exterminateur parcourant tout l'héritage d'Israël: vois donc ce que je dois répondre à Celui qui m'envoie te répéter sa parole.
either three years of famine; or three months to be swept away before thy foes, while the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even pestilence in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the borders of Israel. Now therefore consider what answer I shall return to Him that sent me.'
13 Et David dit à Gad: Le choix des trois parts m'est cruel; mais j'aime mieux me livrer aux mains du Seigneur, parce qu'il a eu souvent compassion de moi; je ne tomberai point dans les mains des hommes.
And David said unto Gad: 'I am in a great strait; let me fall now into the hand of the LORD, for very great are His mercies; and let me not fall into the hand of man.'
14 Et le Seigneur envoya la mort en Israël, et soixante-dix mille hommes d'Israël périrent.
So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel; and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.
15 Le Seigneur envoya aussi l'ange à Jérusalem pour l'exterminer, et comme il frappait, le Seigneur le vit et se repentit de tout ce mal, et il dit à l'ange exterminateur: C'est assez, arrête ta main. Or, l'ange du Seigneur était auprès de l'aire d'Orna le Jébuséen.
And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it; and as he was about to destroy, the LORD beheld, and He repented Him of the evil, and said to the destroying angel: 'It is enough; now stay thy hand.' And the angel of the LORD was standing by the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
16 David, ayant levé les yeux, vit l'ange du Seigneur se tenant entre la terre et le ciel; il avait à la main son épée nue, et il l'étendait sur Jérusalem. Et David et les anciens couverts de cilices tombèrent la face contre terre.
And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD standing between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.
17 Et David dit à Dieu: N'est-ce pas moi qui ai prescrit de faire le dénombrement du peuple? C'est moi qui suis le coupable; j'ai grandement péché. Mais ces brebis qu'ont-elles fait? Seigneur mon Dieu, que votre main soit contre moi et contre la maison de mon père; qu'elle épargne ce peuple qui périt, ô Seigneur.
And David said unto God: 'Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? let Thy hand, I pray Thee, O LORD my God, be against me, and against my father's house; but not against Thy people, that they should be plagued.'
18 Et l'ange du Seigneur dit à Gad de prescrire à David qu'il allât élever un autel au Seigneur dans l'aire d'Orna le Jébuséen.
Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
19 Et David sortit, selon la parole que Gad lui avait dite au nom du Seigneur.
And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in the name of the LORD.
20 Et Orna se retourna, et il vit le roi et quatre de ses fils, tous se cachant, et Orna était à vanner du froment.
And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons that were with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.
21 Et David arriva auprès d'Orna, et Orna, quittant l'aire, se prosterna la face contre terre devant David.
And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshing-floor, and bowed down to David with his face to the ground.
22 Et David dit à Orna: Donne-moi l'emplacement de ton aire, et j'y bâtirai un autel au Seigneur; donne-le-moi à prix d'argent, et le fléau cessera de frapper le peuple.
Then David said to Ornan: 'Give me the place of this threshing-floor, that I may build thereon an altar unto the LORD; for the full price shalt thou give it me; that the plague may be stayed from the people.'
23 Et Orna dit à David: Que le roi mon maître prenne et consacre ce que bon lui semble. Voici mes bœufs pour l'holocauste, ma charrue pour le briller, et mon blé pour le sacrifice; je te donne tout.
And Ornan said unto David: 'Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes; lo, I give thee the oxen for burnt-offerings, and the threshing-instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal-offering; I give it all'
24 Et le roi David dit à Orna: Nullement; certes, j'achèterai toutes ces choses, car elles valent de l'argent; je ne prendrai, pour le Seigneur, rien de ce qui est à toi; je ne présenterai pas au Seigneur un holocauste qui ne me coûte rien.
And king David said to Ornan: 'Nay, but I will verily buy it for the full price; for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer a burnt-offering without cost.'
25 David donna donc à Orna, pour son terrain, six cents sicles d'or, au poids du sicle du sanctuaire.
So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.
26 Il bâtit l'autel du Seigneur, sur lequel il offrit des holocaustes et des hosties pacifiques; enfin, il cria au Seigneur, et le Seigneur l'exauça; le feu du ciel, descendant sur l'autel de l'holocauste, consuma la victime.
And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings, and called upon the LORD; and He answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt-offering.
27 Et le Seigneur parla à l'ange, et l'ange remit l'épée dans le fourreau.
And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword back into the sheath thereof.
28 Dès lors, David, ayant vu que le Seigneur lui répondait dans l'aire d'Orna le Jébuséen, en fit un lieu de sacrifices.
At that time, when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.
29 Or, en ce temps-là, le tabernacle du Seigneur que Moïse avait fait dans le désert, et l'autel des holocaustes, étaient sur le haut lieu de Gabaon. Par crainte de l'ange exterminateur.
For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt-offering, were at that time in the high place at Gibeon.
30 Et David n'avait pu s'y transporter pour prier le Seigneur; il ne s'était point empressé d'y aller, à cause de l'épée de l'ange du Seigneur.
But David could not go before it to inquire of God; for he was terrified because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
