1 Chroniques 19
1 Et Naas, roi des fils d'Ammon, mourut, et Anan (Annon), son fils, régna à sa place.
And it came to pass after this, [that] Naas the king of the children of Ammon died, and Anan his son reigned in his stead.
2 Et David dit: Je serai miséricordieux envers Anan, fils de Naas, de même que son père a été miséricordieux pour moi. En conséquence, il envoya des serviteurs pour le consoler au sujet de son père, et les serviteurs de David allèrent en la terre des fils d'Ammon, auprès d'Anan, pour le consoler.
And David said, I will act kindly towards Anan the son of Naas, as his father acted kindly towards me. And David sent messengers to condole with him on the death of his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Anan, to comfort him.
3 Mais, les princes des fils d'Ammon dirent à Anan: Est-ce pour glorifier devant toi ton père que David envoie ces consolateurs? N'est-ce point plutôt pour s'informer de ta ville et pour là reconnaître que ses serviteurs sont venus près de toi?
And the chiefs of the children of Ammon said to Anan, Is it to honour your father before you, that David has sent comforters to you? Have not his servants come to you that they might search the city, and to spy out the land?
4 Anan saisit donc les serviteurs de David; il leur rasa la barbe; il coupa leurs manteaux, depuis le milieu du corps jusqu'aux pieds; puis, il les chassa.
And Anan took the servants of David, and shaved them, and cut off the half of their garments as far as their tunic, and sent them away.
5 On vint dire à David ce qui leur était arrivé, et il envoya des gens à leur rencontre; car ils étaient cruellement déshonorés, et il leur dit: Demeurez à Jéricho jusqu'à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé; puis, alors vous reviendrez.
And there came men to report to David concerning the men: and he sent to meet them, for they were greatly disgraced: and the king said, Dwell in Jericho until your beards have grown, and return.
6 Les fils d'Ammon, voyant que le peuple d'Israël se tenait pour outragé, Anan et les fils d'Ammon envoyèrent mille talents d'argent pour enrôler des chars et des cavaliers dans la Syrie de Mésopotamie, dans la Syrie Maacha et à Sobal.
And the children of Ammon saw that the people of David were ashamed, and Anan and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire for themselves chariots and horsemen out of Syria of Mesopotamia, and out of Syria Maacha, and from Sobal.
7 Ils enrôlèrent ainsi pour eux trente-deux mille chars, et le roi de Maacha avec tout son peuple. Ces auxiliaires vinrent, et ils campèrent vis-à-vis Médaba. Cependant, les fils d'Ammon, sortant de leurs villes, se rassemblèrent, et ils s'ébranlèrent pour combattre.
And they hired for themselves two and thirty thousand chariots, and the king of Maacha and his people; and they came and encamped before Medaba: and the children of Ammon assembled out of their cities, and came to fight.
8 David l'apprit, et il mit en mouvement Joab avec toute l'armée des hommes vaillants.
And David heard, and sent Joab and all the host of mighty men.
9 Et les fils d'Ammon sortirent, et ils se rangèrent en bataille près des portes de la ville, et les rois leurs alliés campèrent, chacun de son côté, dans la campagne.
And the children of Ammon came forth, and set themselves in array for battle by the gate of the city: and the kings that were come forth encamped by themselves in the plain.
10 Joab reconnut qu'il aurait à livrer bataille devant son front et sur ses derrières; il rangea donc en face des Syriens les plus vaillants des jeunes fils d'Israël.
And Joab saw that they were fronting [him] to fight against him before and behind, and he chose [some] out of all the young men of Israel, and they set themselves in array against the Syrian.
11 Et il confia à son frère Abessa le reste de l'armée, qui se déploya devant les fils d'Ammon.
And the rest of the people he gave into the hand of his brother Abesai, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.
12 Et il dit à son frère: Si le Syrien l'emporte sur moi, tu viendras à mon aide, et si les fils d'Ammon te font plier, j'irai te secourir.
And he said, If the Syrian should prevail against me, then shall you deliver me: and if the children of Ammon should prevail against you, then will I deliver you.
13 Sois fort, agis en homme, pour l'amour de notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu; que le Seigneur ensuite fasse à sa volonté.
Be of good courage, and let us be strong, for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the Lord shall do what [is] good in his eyes.
14 Et Joab avec sa troupe tomba sur les Syriens; et ceux-ci s'enfuirent devant lui.
So Joab and the people that were with him set themselves in battle array against the Syrians, and they fled from them.
15 Quand les fils d'Ammon virent que les Syriens fuyaient, ils s'enfuirent eux-mêmes devant Abessa; et ils s'enfermèrent dans leur ville, et Joab revint à Jérusalem.
And the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians fled, and they also fled from before Abesai, and from before Joab his brother, and they came to the city: and Joab came to Jerusalem.
16 Et le Syrien, voyant qu'Israël l'avait mis en fuite, envoya des messagers qui levèrent toute la Syrie des rives du Jourdain, et à sa tête Sophath (Sobac), général en chef de l'armée d'Adraazar.
And the Syrian saw that Israel had defeated him, and he sent messengers, and they brought out the Syrians from beyond the river; and Sophath the commander-in-chief of the forces of Adraazar [was] before them.
17 On en instruisit David; il réunit tout Israël, passa le Jourdain, les atteignit et les aborda de front; aussitôt la bataille s'engagea.
And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and crossed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So David set [his army] in array to fight against the Syrians, and they fought against him.
18 Les Syriens s'enfuirent devant Israël; David leur tua sept mille hommes montés sur des chars, et quarante mille piétons; Sophath, le général en chef, périt.
And the Syrians fled from before Israel; and David killed of the Syrians seven thousand [riders in] chariots, and forty thousand infantry, and he killed Sophath the commander-in-chief of the forces.
19 Et tous les serviteurs d'Adraazar, voyant qu'ils avaient échoué devant Israël, traitèrent avec David, et ils lui furent asservis. Quant au Syrien, il ne voulut plus secourir les fils d'Ammon.
And the servants of Adraazar saw that they were defeated before Israel, and they made peace with David and served him: and the Syrians would not any more help the children of Ammon.
