Psaumes 44
1 Au chef des chantres. Par les fils de Coré. Maskîl. O Dieu! De nos oreilles nous l’avons entendue, nos pères nous l’ont racontée, l’œuvre que tu as accomplie de leurs jours, aux temps antiques.
For the end, a Psalm for instruction, for the sons of Core. O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, the work which thou wroughtest in their days, in the days of old.
2 Toi, de ta main, tu as dépossédé des nations, et tu les as implantés, eux; tu as ruiné des peuplades, et eux, tu les as multipliés.
Thine hand utterly destroyed the heathen, and thou didst plant them: thou didst afflict the nations, and cast them out.
3 Certes, ce n’est pas leur épée qui les a faits maîtres du pays, ni leur bras qui leur a donné la victoire: c’est ta droite, ton bras, la lumière de ta face; car tu les avais pris en affection.
For they inherited not the land by their [own] sword, and their [own] arm did not deliver them; but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou wert well pleased in them.
4 C’Est toi qui es mon roi, ô Dieu! Décrète les triomphes de Jacob.
Thou art indeed my King and my God, who commandest deliverances for Jacob.
5 Grâce à toi nous enfonçons nos ennemis, avec l’aide de ton nom, nous écrasons nos agresseurs.
In thee will we push down our enemies, and in thy name will we bring to nought them that rise up against us.
6 Car je ne mets pas ma confiance en mon arc; ce n’est pas mon épée qui m’assure la victoire;
For I will not trust in my bow, and my sword shall not save me.
7 mais c’est toi qui nous fait triompher de nos ennemis, qui couvres de confusion ceux qui nous haïssent.
For thou hast saved us from them that afflicted us, and hast put to shame them that hated us.
8 En Dieu nous nous glorifions sans cesse, et à jamais nous célébrons ton nom. (Sélah)
In God will we make our boast all the day, and to thy name will we give thanks for ever. (Pause)
9 Pourtant tu nous as rejetés et humiliés, et tu n’accompagnes plus nos armées.
But now thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and thou wilt not go forth with our hosts.
10 Tu nous fais reculer devant l’ennemi: ceux qui nous haïssent pillent à leur aise.
Thou hast turned us back before our enemies; and they that hated us spoiled for themselves.
11 Tu nous livres comme des troupeaux dont on se nourrit, et nous éparpilles parmi les nations.
Thou madest us as sheep for meat; and thou scatteredst us among the nations.
12 Tu vends ton peuple à vil prix; tu n’estimes pas bien haut sa valeur.
Thou hast sold thy people without price, and there was no profit by their exchange.
13 Tu fais de nous un objet d’opprobre pour nos voisins, la risée et la moquerie de notre entourage.
Thou hast made us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and derision them that are round about us.
14 Tu nous rends la fable des nations; nous excitons des hochements de tête parmi les peuples.
Thou hast made us a proverb among the Gentiles, a shaking of the head among the nations.
15 Tout le temps, mon déshonneur est là, sous mes yeux, et mon visage se couvre de honte
All the day my shame is before me, and the confusion of my face has covered me,
16 à la voix de l’insulteur et du détracteur, à la vue de l’ennemi, avide de vengeance.
because of the voice of the slanderer and reviler; because of the enemy and avenger.
17 Tout cela nous est advenu, sans que nous t’ayons oublié, sans que nous ayons trahi ton alliance.
All these things are come upon us: but we have not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt unrighteously in thy covenant.
18 Notre cœur n’a pas rétrogradé, ni nos pas n’ont dévié de ton chemin,
And our heart has not gone back; but thou hast turned aside our paths from thy way.
19 pour que tu dusses nous reléguer dans la région des monstres et nous recouvrir des ombres de la mort.
For thou hast laid us low in a place of affliction, and the shadow of death has covered us.
20 Si nous avions oublié le nom de notre Dieu, étendu les mains vers un dieu étranger,
If we have forgotten the name of our God, and if we have spread out our hands to a strange god; shall not God search these things out?
21 est-ce que Dieu ne l’aurait pas constaté, puisqu’il connaît les secrets du cœur?
for he knows the secrets of the heart.
22 Mais pour toi nous subissons chaque jour la mort; on nous considère comme des brebis destinées à la boucherie.
For, for thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for slaughter.
23 Réveille-toi donc! Pourquoi demeures-tu endormi, Seigneur? Sors de ton sommeil, ne nous délaisse pas à jamais.
Awake, wherefore sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, and do not cast [us] off for ever.
24 Pourquoi dérobes-tu ta face, oublies-tu notre misère et notre oppression?
Wherefore turnest thou thy face away, [and] forgettest our poverty and our affliction?
25 Car notre âme est abaissée jusque dans la poussière, notre corps est couché de son long sur le sol.
For our soul has been brought down to the dust; our belly has cleaved to the earth.
26 Lève-toi pour nous venir en aide, délivre-nous par un effet de ta bonté!
Arise, O Lord, help us, and redeem us for thy name's sake.
