Proverbes 6
1 Mon fils, si tu t’es porté garant pour ton prochain, si tu as engagé ta parole pour un étranger,
My son, if you have made yourself responsible for your neighbour, or given your word for another,
2 tu es pris au piège de tes promesses; tu es devenu le prisonnier de ta parole.
You are taken as in a net by the words of your mouth, the sayings of your lips have overcome you.
3 Fais donc ceci, mon fils, pour recouvrer ta liberté, puisque tu es tombé au pouvoir d’autrui: va, insiste avec énergie et livre un assaut à ton prochain.
Do this, my son, and make yourself free, because you have come into the power of your neighbour; go without waiting, and make a strong request to your neighbour.
4 N’Accorde pas de sommeil à tes yeux ni de repos à tes paupières.
Give no sleep to your eyes, or rest to them;
5 Dégage-toi, comme le cerf de la main du chasseur, comme le passereau de la main de l’oiseleur.
Make yourself free, like the roe from the hand of the archer, and the bird from him who puts a net for her.
6 Va trouver la fourmi, paresseux, observe ses façons d’agir et deviens sage:
Go to the ant, you hater of work; give thought to her ways and be wise:
7 elle n’a ni maître, ni surveillant, ni supérieur;
Having no chief, overseer, or ruler,
8 et elle prépare sa nourriture durant l’été, elle amasse ses provisions au temps de la moisson!
She gets her meat in the summer, storing up food at the time of the grain-cutting.
9 Jusqu’à quand, paresseux, resteras-tu couché? Quand sortiras-tu de ton sommeil?
How long will you be sleeping, O hater of work? when will you get up from your sleep?
10 "Ah! dormir encore un peu, rester un peu assoupi, entrelacer un peu les mains pour reposer!"
A little sleep, a little rest, a little folding of the hands in sleep:
11 Cependant, la pauvreté s’introduit chez toi comme un rôdeur, et la misère comme un guerrier armé.
Then loss will come on you like an outlaw, and your need like an armed man
12 Un personnage ignoble, un homme inique, c’est celui qui a recours au langage tortueux,
A good-for-nothing man is an evil-doer; he goes on his way causing trouble with false words;
13 qui cligne des yeux, frappe des pieds, fait des signes avec ses doigts,
Making signs with his eyes, rubbing with his feet, and giving news with his fingers;
14 et, le cœur plein d’artifices, passe son temps à méditer le mal, à déchaîner la discorde.
His mind is ever designing evil: he lets loose violent acts.
15 Aussi le malheur fond-il soudain sur lui; d’un coup, il est brisé et sans retour.
For this cause his downfall will be sudden; quickly he will be broken, and there will be no help for him.
16 Il est six choses que l’Eternel déteste et sept qu’il a en horreur:
Six things are hated by the Lord; seven things are disgusting to him:
17 les yeux hautains, la langue mensongère, les mains qui répandent le sang innocent;
Eyes of pride, a false tongue, hands which take life without cause;
18 le cœur qui ourdit des desseins pervers, les pieds impatients de courir au mal,
A heart full of evil designs, feet which are quick in running after sin;
19 le faux témoin qui exhale le mensonge, enfin l’homme qui déchaîne la discorde entre frères.
A false witness, breathing out untrue words, and one who lets loose violent acts among brothers.
20 Mon fils, sois fidèle aux recommandations de ton père, ne délaisse pas l’enseignement de ta mère.
My son, keep the rule of your father, and have in memory the teaching of your mother:
21 Porte-les constamment attachés à ton cœur, noués à ton cou.
Keep them ever folded in your heart, and have them hanging round your neck.
22 Qu’ils te guident dans tes marches, veillent sur ton repos et te soient un sujet d’entretien à ton réveil.
In your walking, it will be your guide; when you are sleeping, it will keep watch over you; when you are awake, it will have talk with you.
23 Car le devoir est un flambeau, la doctrine une lumière, les dictées de la morale un gage de vie.
For the rule is a light, and the teaching a shining light; and the guiding words of training are the way of life.
24 C’Est ainsi que tu seras protégé contre la femme vicieuse, contre la langue mielleuse de l’étrangère.
They will keep you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the strange woman.
25 Ne convoite pas sa beauté en ton cœur, ne te laisse pas prendre à la séduction de ses paupières.
Let not your heart's desire go after her fair body; let not her eyes take you prisoner.
26 Car pour une courtisane on peut être réduit à une miche de pain; une femme adultère prend dans ses filets un gibier de prix.
For a loose woman is looking for a cake of bread, but another man's wife goes after one's very life.
27 Peut-on attiser du feu dans son sein, sans que les vêtements soient consumés?
May a man take fire to his breast without burning his clothing?
28 Peut-on marcher sur des charbons ardents, sans se brûler les pieds jusqu’au vif?
Or may one go on lighted coals, and his feet not be burned?
29 Il en est ainsi de celui qui approche de la femme de son prochain; il ne restera pas indemne, celui qui la touche.
So it is with him who goes in to his neighbour's wife; he who has anything to do with her will not go free from punishment.
30 On ne méprise pas le voleur qui commet un larcin pour assouvir sa faim.
Men do not have a low opinion of a thief who takes food when he is in need of it:
31 Mais s’il est pris, il devra payer au septuple, donner tous les biens de sa maison.
But if he is taken in the act he will have to give back seven times as much, giving up all his property which is in his house.
32 Commettre un adultère c’est être insensé qui veut se perdre agit ainsi.
He who takes another man's wife is without all sense: he who does it is the cause of destruction to his soul.
33 Il ne recueillera que souffrances et déshonneur; sa honte sera ineffaçable.
Wounds will be his and loss of honour, and his shame may not be washed away.
34 Car la jalousie exaspère la fureur du mari: il sera sans pitié au jour de la vengeance.
For bitter is the wrath of an angry husband; in the day of punishment he will have no mercy.
35 Il ne se laissera apaiser par aucune rançon; il se montrera inexorable, dusses-tu prodiguer les présents.
He will not take any payment; and he will not make peace with you though your money offerings are increased.
