Proverbes 24
1 Ne jalouse pas les hommes d’iniquité; ne souhaite pas de frayer avec eux;
Be not thou envious of evil men, neither desire to be with them;
2 car leur cœur machine des ruines, et leurs lèvres débitent l’injustice.
for their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.
3 C’Est par la sagesse que s’édifie la maison c’est par la raison qu’elle se consolide.
Through wisdom is a house built, and by understanding it is established;
4 Grâce à l’intelligence, le logis se remplit de toute sorte de biens rares et précieux.
and by knowledge are the chambers filled with all precious and pleasant substance.
5 Le sage est armé d’énergie, et l’homme d’expérience voit doubler sa force.
A wise man is strong, and a man of knowledge increaseth strength.
6 C’Est en suivant un plan habile que tu dois entreprendre la guerre; la victoire est assurée par la multitude des conseillers.
For with good advice shalt thou make thy war; and in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
7 Les données de la sagesse sont inaccessibles au sot; à la Porte, il n’ouvre pas la bouche.
Wisdom is too high for a fool: he will not open his mouth in the gate.
8 Qui médite de faire le mal, on l’appelle l’homme aux noirs projets.
He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a master of intrigues.
9 Le péché est une conception de la folie, et les gens ont horreur du persifleur.
The purpose of folly is sin, and the scorner is an abomination to men.
10 Il faiblit au jour de la détresse: c’est que ton courage a l’haleine courte.
[If] thou losest courage in the day of trouble, thy strength is small.
11 Sauve ceux qu’on traîne à la mort, ne manque pas de défendre ceux qui vont au supplice.
Deliver them that are taken forth unto death, and withdraw not from them that stagger to slaughter.
12 Tu diras peut-être: "Cet homme là, nous ne le connaissons pas!" Mais celui qui pénètre au. fond des cœurs comprend; celui qui veille sur ta vie sait, et il rétribue chacun selon ses œuvres.
If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not, will not he that weigheth the hearts consider it? And he that preserveth thy soul, he knoweth it; and he rendereth to man according to his work.
13 Mange du miel, mon fils, car c’est bon; les rayons en seront doux à ton palais.
Eat honey, my son, for it is good; and a honeycomb is sweet to thy taste:
14 Telle est, sache-le bien, la sagesse pour ton âme; si tu t’en rends maître, il y a de l’avenir pour toi, ton espoir ne sera pas anéanti.
so consider wisdom for thy soul; if thou hast found it, there shall be a result, and thine expectation shall not be cut off.
15 Méchant, pas de machination secrète contre la demeure du juste! Pas d’entreprises contre le lieu de sa résidence!
Lay not wait, O wicked [man], against the dwelling of the righteous; lay not waste his resting-place.
16 Car le juste tombe sept fois, et se relève; mais les méchants sont culbutés par le malheur.
For the righteous falleth seven times, and riseth up again; but the wicked stumble into disaster.
17 Lorsque ton ennemi tombe, ne te réjouis point; s’il succombe, que ton cœur ne jubile pas!
Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thy heart be glad when he stumbleth;
18 L’Eternel verrait cela de mauvais œil, et il détournerait de lui sa colère.
lest Jehovah see it, and it be evil in his sight, and he turn away his anger from him.
19 Ne porte pas envie aux malfaiteurs, ne jalouse pas les méchants;
Fret not thyself because of evil-doers, [and] be not envious of the wicked:
20 car le méchant n’a pas d’avenir: la lumière des impies est fumeuse.
for there shall be no future to the evil [man]; the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
21 Crains l’Eternel, mon fils, ainsi que le roi: ne te mêle pas aux novateurs;
My son, fear Jehovah and the king: meddle not with them that are given to change.
22 car soudain, le désastre fond sur eux: qui peut mesurer les coups que leur réservent l’un et l’autre?
For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both?
23 Les sentences suivantes émanent également des sages: Faire acception de personnes en justice n’est pas une bonne chose.
These things also come from the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.
24 Celui qui prononce sur le coupable en disant: "Tu es acquitté!" les peuples le maudissent, les gens l’exècrent.
He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous, peoples shall curse him, nations shall abhor him;
25 Mais on est bienveillant pour ceux qui le répriment, et il leur vient des souhaits de bonheur.
but to them that rebuke [him] shall be delight, and a good blessing cometh upon them.
26 C’Est comme un baiser des lèvres que de répliquer par dés paroles équitables.
He kisseth the lips who giveth a right answer.
27 Prépare-toi une occupation au dehors, déploie ton activité dans ton champ, puis, tu édifieras ta maison.
Prepare thy work without, and put thy field in order, and afterwards build thy house.
28 Ne témoigne pas sans motif contre ton prochain: prétendrais-tu exercer une séduction par tes lèvres?
Be not a witness against thy neighbour without cause; and wouldest thou deceive with thy lips?
29 Ne dis pas: "Comme il m’a traité, je le traiterai; je rends à chacun selon ses œuvres."
Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me, I will render to the man according to his work.
30 J’Ai passé près du champ d’un paresseux, près du vignoble d’un homme privé de sens.
I went by the field of a sluggard, and by the vineyard of a man void of understanding;
31 Et voilà qu’il était tout envahi par l’ivraie; les ronces en recouvraient la surface, l’enclos de pierres était en ruines.
and lo, it was all grown over with thistles, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and its stone wall was broken down.
32 Je contemplai ce spectacle, j’y donnai mon attention, et de cette vue je tirai une leçon:
Then I looked, I took it to heart; I saw, I received instruction:
33 "Ah! dormir encore un peu, rester un peu assoupi, entrelacer un peu les mains pour reposer!"
— A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest!
34 "Cependant, la pauvreté s’introduit chez toi comme un rôdeur, et la misère comme un guerrier armé!"
So shall thy poverty come [as] a roving plunderer, and thy penury as an armed man.
