Proverbes 23
1 Lorsque tu t’attables pour manger avec un supérieur, considère bien qui tu as devant toi.
When thou sittest to eate with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee,
2 Tu t’enfonceras un couteau dans la gorge, si tu te comportes en glouton.
And put the knife to thy throte, if thou be a man giuen to the appetite.
3 Ne convoite pas ses plats fins, car c’est une nourriture trompeuse.
Be not desirous of his deintie meates: for it is a deceiuable meate.
4 Ne te fatigue pas pour t’enrichir renonce à ton savoir-faire.
Trauaile not too much to be rich: but cease from thy wisdome.
5 Tes regards se seront à peine posés sur la fortune, qu’elle ne sera plus; car elle ne manquera pas de s’acquérir des ailes, tel un aigle qui s’envole dans les cieux.
Wilt thou cast thine eyes vpon it, which is nothing? for riches taketh her to her wings, as an eagle, and flyeth into the heauen.
6 Ne mange pas le pain d’un avare et ne convoite pas ses friandises.
Eate thou not the bread of him that hath an euil eye, neither desire his deintie meates.
7 Car c’est comme un coup de poignard pour lui: c’est sa façon d’être. "Mange et bois", te dira-t-il, mais son cœur n’y est pas.
For as though he thought it in his heart, so will hee say vnto thee, Eate and drinke: but his heart is not with thee.
8 Le morceau de pain mangé par toi, tu le vomiras et tu auras dépensé en pure perte tes paroles aimables.
Thou shalt vomit thy morsels that thou hast eaten, and thou shalt lose thy sweete wordes.
9 Ne parle pas aux oreilles du fou, car il méprisera tes discours pleins de bon sens.
Speake not in the eares of a foole: for hee will despise the wisdome of thy wordes.
10 Ne recule pas les bornes antiques, et n’empiète pas sur le champ des orphelins;
Remooue not the ancient boundes, and enter not into the fieldes of the fatherlesse.
11 car puissant est leur défenseur, il prendra en mains leur cause contre toi.
For he that redeemeth them, is mightie: he will defend their cause against thee.
12 Ouvre ton cœur à la morale et tes oreilles aux paroles de raison.
Apply thine heart to instruction, and thine eares to the wordes of knowledge.
13 N’Épargne pas les corrections au jeune homme; si tu le frappes avec la verge, il n’en mourra point.
Withhold not correction from the childe: if thou smite him with the rodde, he shall not die.
Thou shalt smite him with the rodde, and shalt deliuer his soule from hell. (Sheol h7585)
15 Mon fils si ton cœur acquiert la sagesse, mon cœur à moi en aura de la joie;
My sonne, if thine heart be wise, mine heart shall reioyce, and I also.
16 mes reins seront transportés d’aise, quand tes lèvres s’exprimeront avec rectitude.
And my reynes shall reioyce, when thy lips speake righteous things.
17 Que ton cœur n’envie pas le sort des pécheurs, mais s’attache constamment à la crainte du Seigneur;
Let not thine heart bee enuious against sinners: but let it bee in the feare of the Lord continually.
18 car assurément il y a un avenir, et ton espoir ne sera point anéanti.
For surely there is an ende, and thy hope shall not be cut off.
19 Ecoute-moi bien, mon fils, et deviens sage; dirige ton cœur dans le droit chemin.
O thou my sonne, heare, and bee wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
20 Ne sois point parmi les buveurs de vin, parmi les amis de la bonne chère;
Keepe not company with drunkards, nor with gluttons.
21 car ivrogne et gourmand tombent dans la misère; le goût du sommeil réduit à se couvrir de haillons.
For the drunkard and the glutton shall bee poore, and the sleeper shalbe clothed with ragges.
22 Sois docile à ton père qui t’a donné le jour et ne dédaigne pas la vieillesse de ta mère.
Obey thy father that hath begotten thee, and despise not thy mother when she is olde.
23 Achète la vérité et ne la revends pas, non plus que la sagesse, la morale et la raison.
Bye the trueth, but sell it not: likewise wisdome, and instruction, and vnderstanding.
24 Le père d’un juste est au comble de la joie; qui a donné naissance à un sage est heureux.
The father of the righteous shall greatly reioyce, and hee that begetteth a wise childe, shall haue ioy of him.
25 Que ton père et ta mère se réjouissent donc; qu’elle jubile, celle qui t’a enfanté!
Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall reioyce.
26 Mon fils, donne-moi ton cœur et aie les yeux ouverts sur ma voie.
My sonne, giue mee thine heart, and let thine eyes delite in my wayes.
27 Car la courtisane est un abîme sans fond, l’étrangère, un puits étroit.
For a whore is as a deepe ditche, and a strange woman is as a narrowe pitte.
28 Aussi bien, elle se met en embuscade comme un brigand; elle multiplie les trahisons parmi les hommes.
Also she lyeth in wait as for a praye, and she increaseth the transgressers among men.
29 Pour qui les ah! pour qui les hélas! pour qui les disputes et pour qui les plaintes? pour qui les blessures gratuites et pour qui la vue trouble?
To whome is woe? to whome is sorowe? to whom is strife? to whom is murmuring? to whom are woundes without cause? and to whome is the rednesse of the eyes?
30 Pour ceux qui s’attardent à boire, pour ceux qui vont déguster le vin parfumé.
Euen to them that tarie long at the wine, to them that goe, and seeke mixt wine.
31 Ne couve pas de tes regards le vin vermeil qui brille dans la coupe: il glisse doucement,
Looke not thou vpon the wine, when it is red, and when it sheweth his colour in the cup, or goeth downe pleasantly.
32 et finit par mordre comme un serpent, par piquer comme un aspic.
In the ende thereof it will bite like a serpent, and hurt like a cockatrise.
33 Alors tes yeux voient des choses étranges et ton cœur laisse échapper des propos incohérents.
Thine eyes shall looke vpon strange women, and thine heart shall speake lewde things.
34 Tu te crois gisant au fond de la mer, couché au sommet d’un mât.
And thou shalt bee as one that sleepeth in the middes of the sea, and as hee that sleepeth in the toppe of the maste.
35 "On m’a frappé diras-tu, et je n’ai pas eu de mal; on m’a roué de coups, et je ne l’ai pas senti. Quand donc me réveillerai-je? Je recommencerai, j’en demanderai encore!"
They haue stricken mee, shalt thou say, but I was not sicke: they haue beaten mee, but I knew not, when I awoke: therefore will I seeke it yet still.
