Proverbes 22
1 Un nom estimé est préférable à la grande richesse: la sympathie est plus précieuse que l’argent et que l’or.
A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, loving favor rather than silver and gold.
2 Riche et pauvre sont sur la même ligne: l’Eternel les a faits l’un et l’autre.
The rich and the poor meet together. Jehovah is the maker of them all.
3 L’Homme avisé aperçoit le danger et se met à l’abri; les niais passent outre et en pâtissent.
A prudent man sees the evil, and hides himself, but the simple pass on, and suffer for it.
4 Fruits de l’humilité, de la crainte de Dieu: richesse, honneur et vie!
The reward of humility and the fear of Jehovah is riches and honor and life.
5 Des lacets et des pièges sont semés sur la route du pervers; qui tient à sa vie s’en éloigne.
Thorns and snares are in the way of a perverse man. He who keeps his soul shall be far from them.
6 Donne au jeune homme de bonnes habitudes dès le début de sa carrière; même avancé en âge, il ne s’en écartera point.
Train up a child in the way he should go, and even when he is old he will not depart from it.
7 Le riche prime les pauvres; le débiteur est prisonnier de son créancier.
The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
8 Qui sème l’injustice, récolte l’adversité, l’instrument de sa passion sera anéanti.
He who sows iniquity shall reap calamity, and the rod of his wrath shall fail.
9 Celui qui a bon cœur sera béni, car il partage son pain avec le pauvre.
He who has a bountiful eye shall be blessed, for he gives of his bread to the poor.
10 Expulse le persifleur, la discorde décampera avec lui, plus de disputes ni d’injures!
Cast out the scoffer, and contention will go out, yea, strife and reproach will cease.
11 Un ami au cœur pur, par l’agrément de ses lèvres, gagne l’affection du roi.
He who loves pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips, the king will be his friend.
12 Les yeux de l’Eternel protègent le vrai savoir; mais ils renversent les entreprises du perfide.
The eyes of Jehovah preserve knowledge, but he overthrows the words of the treacherous man.
13 Le paresseux s’écrie: "Il y a un lion dehors! Je vais être massacré en pleine rue!"
The sluggard says, There is a lion outside. I shall be slain in the streets.
14 La bouche des femmes étrangères est comme un abîme profond; celui que Dieu réprouve y tombe.
The mouth of interloping women is a deep pit. He who is abhorred of Jehovah shall fall in it.
15 La sottise est attachée au cœur de l’adolescent; la verge qui châtie doit l’en arracher.
Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
16 On pressure le pauvre, et cela tourne à son profit; on donne au riche, et c’est un appauvrissement pour lui.
He who oppresses a poor man to his increase, and he who gives to a rich man, comes only to want.
17 Incline ton oreille et écoute les paroles des sages; prête ton attention aux leçons de mon expérience.
Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thy heart to my knowledge.
18 II sera beau pour toi de les retenir en ton cœur, de les fixer en permanence sur tes lèvres.
For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee, if they be established together upon thy lips.
19 Mets ta confiance en l’Eternel; voilà ce que je t’enseigne à toi-même en ce jour.
That thy trust may be in Jehovah, I have made them known to thee this day, even to thee.
20 N’Est-ce pas à ton intention que j’ai consigné par écrit d’importantes maximes, en fait de bons conseils et d’expérience,
Have I not written to thee excellent things of counsels and knowledge,
21 pour t’apprendre ce qu’iI y a de réel dans les dictons de la vérité et te permettre de présenter fidèlement les choses à ceux qui t’envoient?
to make thee know the certainty of the words of truth, that thou may carry back words of truth to those who send thee?
22 Ne dépouille pas le faible parce qu’il est sans défense; n’écrase pas le pauvre à la Porte,
Do not rob a poor man, because he is poor, nor oppress an afflicted man in the gate.
23 car l’Eternel prend en mains leur cause et il traite avec rigueur ceux qui leur infligent des vexations.
For Jehovah will plead their cause, and despoil of life those who despoil them.
24 Ne fraye pas avec un homme irascible, ne lie pas société avec quelqu’un qui s’emporte:
Make no friendship with a man who is given to anger, and thou shall not go with a wrathful man,
25 tu pourrais copier leurs mœurs et t’engager toi-même dans un piège.
lest thou learn this ways, and get a snare to thy soul.
26 Ne sois pas de ceux qui disent: "Touchez-là!" et qui se portent garants pour des emprunts.
Be thou not one of those who strike hands, or of those who are sureties for debts.
27 Que tu n’aies pas de quoi payer, pourquoi t’exposer à ce que l’on saisisse la couche où tu reposes?
If thou have not wherewith to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?
28 Ne déplace pas les bornes antiques, que tes pères ont posées.
Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.
29 Vois cet homme diligent dans son travail: il pourra paraître devant les rois au lieu de se tenir auprès des gens obscurs.
See thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before obscure men.
