Proverbes 16
1 L’Homme est maître des résolutions de son cœur; mais c’est l’Eternel qui prononce sur elles.
It is the part of man to prepare the soul: and of the Lord to govern the tongue.
2 Toutes les voies de l’homme sont pures à ses yeux, mais l’Eternel sonde les esprits.
All the ways of a man are open to his eyes: the Lord is the weigher of spirits.
3 Remets le succès de tes œuvres à l’Eternel, et tes projets s’en trouveront affermis.
Lay open thy works to the Lord: and thy thoughts shall be directed.
4 L’Eternel a tout fait pour un but prédestiné, même le méchant pour le jour du malheur.
The Lord hath made all things for himself: the wicked also for the evil day.
5 Tout cœur hautain est en horreur à l’Eternel: haut la main! il ne restera pas indemne.
Every proud man is an abomination to the Lord: though hand should be joined to hand, he is not innocent. The beginning of a good way is to do justice; and this is more acceptable with God, than to offer sacrifices.
6 La bonté et la bienveillance effacent la faute; la crainte de l’Eternel fait éviter le mal.
By mercy and truth iniquity is redeemed: and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil.
7 Dieu agrée-t-il les voies d’un homme, il lui concilie même la faveur de ses ennemis.
When the ways of man shall please the Lord, he will convert even his enemies to peace.
8 Mieux vaut une honnête médiocrité qu’un grand revenu, acquis par l’improbité.
Better is a little with justice, than great revenues with iniquity.
9 Le cœur de l’homme choisit sa voie; mais l’Eternel dirige ses pas.
The heart of man disposeth his way: but the Lord must direct his steps.
10 Ce sont des oracles qui émanent des lèvres du roi: quand il rend la justice, sa bouche ne faillit pas.
Divination is in the lips of the king, his mouth shall not err in judgment.
11 Les plateaux, les balances exactes sont choses de Dieu, il est l’auteur de tous les justes poids.
Weight and balance are judgments of the Lord: and his work all the weights of the bag.
12 Faire le mal est chose odieuse aux rois; car les trônes s’affermissent par la justice.
They that act wickedly are abominable to the king: for the throne is established by justice.
13 Des lèvres loyales font plaisir aux rois; ils aiment qui parle avec droiture.
Just lips are the delight of kings: he that speaketh right things shall be loved.
14 Le courroux du roi est un messager de mort, un homme sage sait l’apaiser.
The wrath of a king is as messengers of death: and the wise man will pacify it.
15 Que le visage du roi s’éclaire, c’est un gage de vie; sa faveur est comme une nuée chargée de pluie printanière.
In the cheerfulness of the king’s countenance is life: and his clemency is like the latter rain.
16 Acquérir la sagesse, combien cela est plus précieux que l’or fin! S’Enrichir en sagacité vaut mieux que l’argent.
Get wisdom, because it is better than gold: and purchase prudence, for it is more precious than silver.
17 La route des justes les éloigne du mal; qui suit droit son chemin préserve sa vie.
The path of the just departeth from evils: he that keepeth his soul keepeth his way.
18 L’Orgueil précède la ruine, l’arrogance est le signe avant-coureur de la chute.
Pride goeth before destruction: and the spirit is lifted up before a fall.
19 Prendre une attitude modeste avec les humbles vaut mieux que partager du butin avec les orgueilleux.
It is better to be humbled with the meek, than to divide spoils with the proud.
20 Qui réfléchit mûrement à une affaire s’assure des avantages; mais heureux qui met sa confiance en l’Eternel!
The learned in word shall find good things: and he that trusteth in the Lord is blessed.
21 Qui a le cœur sage mérite d’être appelé intelligent; la douceur des lèvres augmente la force de persuasion.
The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and he that is sweet in words shall attain to greater things.
22 L’Intelligence est une source de vie pour celui qui en est doué; le châtiment des sots, c’est leur sottise.
Knowledge is a fountain of life to him that possesseth it: the instruction of fools is foolishness.
23 Le cœur du sage inspire sa bouche, et augmente la force de persuasion de ses lèvres.
The heart of the wise shall instruct his mouth: and shall add grace to his lips.
24 Des paroles amènes sont un rayon de miel, doux à l’âme, bienfaisant au corps.
Well ordered words are as a honeycomb: sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.
25 Tel chemin paraît tout uni à l’homme, et il aboutit aux avenues de la mort.
There is a way that seemeth to a man right: and the ends thereof lead to death.
26 C’Est pour lui-même que travaille le laborieux, car pressantes sont les exigences de sa bouche.
The soul of him that laboureth, laboureth for himself, because his mouth hath obliged him to it.
27 L’Homme sans valeur morale est un artisan de malheur; sur ses lèvres il y a comme un feu dévorant.
The wicked man diggeth evil, and in his lips is a burning fire.
28 L’Homme artificieux déchaîne la discorde; le boutefeu sème la division entre amis.
A perverse man stirreth up quarrels: and one full of words separateth princes.
29 L’Homme violent circonvient son prochain et le mène dans une mauvaise voie.
An unjust man allureth his friend: and leadeth him into a way that is not good.
30 Il ferme les yeux pour méditer de mauvais coups; il se pince les lèvres: il a consommé le mal!
He that with fixed eyes deviseth wicked things, biting his lips, bringeth: evil to pass.
31 La haute vieillesse est une couronne d’honneur; c’est sur le chemin de la vertu qu’elle se rencontre.
Old age is a crown of dignity, when it is found in the ways of justice.
32 Qui résiste à la colère l’emporte sur le héros; qui domine ses passionssur un preneur de villes.
The patient man is better than the valiant: and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh cities.
33 On agite le sort dans l’urne mais l’arrêt qu’il prononce vient de l’Eternel.
Lots are cast into the lap, but they are disposed of by the Lord.
