Proverbes 13
1 L’Enfant sage suit la morale de son père; mais le libertin n’écoute aucun reproche.
A wise son [heareth] his father's instruction; but a scorner heareth not rebuke.
2 L’Homme doit à l’usage de la parole le bien dont il jouit; les gens violents ne rêvent que violence.
A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth; but the soul of the treacherous, violence.
3 Mettre un frein à sa bouche, c’est sauvegarder sa personne; ouvrir largement ses lèvres, c’est préparer sa ruine.
He that guardeth his mouth keepeth his soul; destruction shall be to him that openeth wide his lips.
4 Le paresseux a l’âme remplie de désirs et n’arrive à rien; l’âme des gens actifs nage dans l’abondance.
A sluggard's soul desireth and hath nothing; but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.
5 Le juste hait tout ce qui est mensonge; le méchant prodigue avanies et affronts.
A righteous [man] hateth lying; but the wicked maketh himself odious and cometh to shame.
6 La vertu protège celui qui marche intègre la méchanceté perd les malfaiteurs.
Righteousness preserveth him that is perfect in the way; but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.
7 Tel fait le riche et n’a rien, tel fait le pauvre et possède une grande fortune.
There is that feigneth himself rich, and hath nothing; there is that maketh himself poor, and hath great wealth.
8 La richesse peut servir à l’homme à racheter sa vie, mais le pauvre est inaccessible à la menace.
The ransom of a man's life is his riches; but the indigent heareth not rebuke.
9 La lumière des justes répand une joyeuse clarté; la lampe des méchants est fumeuse.
The light of the righteous rejoiceth; but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
10 Rien de tel que l’arrogance pour engendrer des querelles; la sagesse est avec ceux qui se laissent conseiller.
By pride there only cometh contention; but with the well-advised is wisdom.
11 La richesse venue comme par un souffle va en diminuant; qui amasse poignée par poignée la voit s’augmenter.
Wealth [gotten] by vanity diminisheth; but he that gathereth by manual-labour shall increase [it].
12 Une espérance qui traîne en longueur est un crève-cœur; un désir satisfait est un arbre de vie.
Hope deferred maketh the heart sick; but the desire [that] cometh to pass is a tree of life.
13 Qui dédaigne un ordre en éprouve du dommage; qui respecte un commandement en est récompensé.
Whoso despiseth the word shall be held by it; but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.
14 L’Enseignement du sage est une source de vie: il éloigne des pièges de la mort.
The teaching of the wise [man] is a fountain of life, to turn away from the snares of death.
15 Un esprit bienveillant procure la sympathie; mais la voie des perfides est invariablement stérile.
Good understanding procureth favour; but the way of the treacherous is hard.
16 Tout homme avisé agit avec réflexion; le sot donne libre cours à sa folie.
Every prudent [man] acteth with knowledge; but the foolish layeth open [his] folly.
17 Un mandataire pervers tombe dans le malheur, le messager consciencieux est un bienfait.
A wicked messenger falleth into evil; but a faithful ambassador is health.
18 Qui abandonne la morale ne rencontre que misère et honte; qui tient compte des remontrances est honoré.
Poverty and shame shall be [to] him that refuseth instruction; but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.
19 Un désir qui se réalise est une joie pour l’âme; s’abstenir du mal fait horreur aux sots.
The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul; but it is abomination to the foolish to depart from evil.
20 Frayer avec les sages, c’est devenir sage; fréquenter les sots, c’est devenir mauvais.
He that walketh with wise [men] becometh wise; but a companion of the foolish will be depraved.
21 Le mal poursuit les pécheurs; le bien est la récompense des justes.
Evil pursueth sinners; but to the righteous good shall be repaid.
22 L’Homme de bien transmet son héritage aux enfants de ses enfants, mais la richesse du pécheur est réservée au juste.
A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children; but the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the righteous [man].
23 Le champ bien cultivé du pauvre donne des vivres abondants; il en est qui se perdent par l’absence de toute règle.
Much food is in the tillage of the poor; but there is that is lost for want of judgment.
24 Ménager les coups de verge, c’est haïr son enfant; mais avoir soin de le corriger, c’est l’aimer.
He that spareth his rod hateth his son; but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.
25 Le juste mange pour apaiser sa faim; mais le ventre des méchants n’en a jamais assez.
The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul; but the belly of the wicked shall want.
