1 L’Éternel parla à Moïse en ces termes:

And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying,

2 "Ordonne aux enfants d’Israël de renvoyer du camp tout individu lépreux, ou atteint de flux, ou souillé par un cadavre.

Command the children of Israel, that they send out of the camp every leper, and every one that hath an issue, and whosoever is defiled by the dead:

3 Renvoyez-les, hommes ou femmes, reléguez-les hors du camp, afin qu’ils ne souillent point ces enceintes au milieu desquelles je réside."

Both male and female shall ye send out, to without the camp shall ye send them; that they defile not their camps, in the midst whereof I dwell.

4 Ainsi firent les enfants d’Israël: ils les renvoyèrent hors du camp. Comme l’Éternel avait parlé à Moïse, ainsi agirent les enfants d’Israël.

And the children of Israel did so, and they sent them out to without the camp: as the Lord had spoken unto Moses, so did the children of Israel.

5 L’Éternel parla à Moïse en ces termes:

And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying,

6 "Parle ainsi aux enfants d’Israël: Si un homme ou une femme a causé quelque préjudice à une personne et, par là, commis une faute grave envers le Seigneur, mais qu’ensuite cet individu se sente coupable,

Speak unto the children of Israel, If any man or woman commit any sin against a fellow-man, thereby doing a trespass against the Lord, and this person thus become guilty:

7 il confessera le préjudice commis, puis il restituera intégralement l’objet du délit, augmenté du cinquième, et qui doit être remis à la personne lésée.

Then shall they confess their sin which they have committed; and he shall make restitution for his trespass with the principal thereof, and its fifth part shall he add thereto, and give it unto him against whom he hath trespassed.

8 Si cette personne n’a pas de proche parent à qui l’on puisse restituer l’objet du délit, cet objet, appartenant à l’Éternel, sera remis au pontife; indépendamment du bélier expiatoire, par lequel on lui obtiendra grâce.

But if the man have no kinsman to whom restitution could be made for the trespass, then shall the trespass which is restored unto the Lord, belong to the priest; besides the ram of the atonement, whereby an atonement shall be made for him.

9 Toute chose prélevée ou tout objet consacré offert par les enfants d’Israël au pontife, lui appartiendra.

And every offering of all the holy things of the children of Israel, which they bring unto the priest, shall be his.

10 Possesseur d’une chose sainte, on peut en disposer; dès qu’on l’a donnée au pontife, elle est à lui."

And every man's hallowed things shall be his: whatsoever any man giveth to the priest, shall belong to him.

11 L’Éternel parla à Moïse en ces termes:

And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying,

12 "Parle aux enfants d’Israël et dis-leur: Si la femme de quelqu’un, déviant de ses devoirs, lui devient infidèle;

Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If the wife of any man go aside, and commit a trespass against him,

13 si un homme a eu avec elle un commerce charnel à l’insu de son époux, et qu’elle ait été clandestinement déshonorée, nul cependant ne déposant contre elle, parce qu’elle n’a pas été surprise,

And a man lie with her carnally, and it be hidden from the eyes of her husband, because she hath been secretly defiled; and there be no witness against her, and she have not been detected and in the fact;

14 mais qu’un esprit de jalousie se soit emparé de lui et qu’il soupçonne sa femme, effectivement déshonorée; ou qu’un esprit de jalousie se soit emparé de lui et qu’il soupçonne sa femme, bien qu’elle n’ait point subi le déshonneur,

And the spirit of jealousy come over him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she have been defiled; or the spirit of jealousy come over him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she have not been defiled:

15 cet homme conduira sa femme devant le pontife, et présentera pour offrande, à cause d’elle, un dixième d’épha de farine d’orge; il n’y versera point d’huile et n’y mettra point d’encens, car c’est une oblation de jalousie, une oblation de ressouvenir, laquelle remémore l’offense.

Then shall the man bring his wife unto the priest, and he shall bring her offering for her, the tenth part of an ephah of barley-meal; he shall not pour any oil upon it, nor put any frankincense thereupon; for it is a meat-offering of jealousy, a meat-offering of memorial, bringing iniquity to remembrance.

16 Et le pontife la fera approcher, et il la placera en présence du Seigneur.

And the priest shall bring her near, and place her before the Lord;

17 Le pontife puisera de l’eau sainte dans un vase d’argile, prendra de la poussière se trouvant sur le sol du tabernacle et la mettra dans cette eau.

And the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle the priest shall take, and put it into the water;

18 Plaçant alors la femme en présence du Seigneur, le pontife lui découvrira la tête et lui posera sur les mains l’oblation de ressouvenir, qui est l’oblation de jalousie, tandis qu’il tiendra dans sa propre main les eaux amères de la malédiction.

And the priest shall place the woman before the Lord, and uncover the woman's head, and put upon her hands the meat-offering of memorial, it is the meat-offering of jealousy; and in the hand of the priest shall be the bitter waters that bring the curse.

19 Puis le pontife adjurera cette femme. Il lui dira: "Si un homme n’a pas eu commerce avec toi, si tu n’as pas dévié, en te souillant, de tes devoirs envers ton époux, sois épargnée par ces eaux amères de la malédiction.

And the priest shall charge her by an oath, and he shall say unto the woman, If no man have lain with thee, and if thou hast not gone aside to uncleanness behind thy husband: then be thou free from these bitter waters that bring the curse.

20 Mais s’il est vrai que tu aies trahi ton époux et te sois laissée déshonorer; si un homme a eu commerce avec toi, autre que ton époux…"

But if thou hast gone aside behind thy husband, and if thou hast been defiled, and some man have lain with thee besides thy husband: —

21 Alors le pontife adjurera la femme par le serment d’imprécation, et il dira à la femme: "Que l’Éternel fasse de toi un sujet d’imprécation et de serment au milieu de ton peuple, en faisant lui l’Éternel dépérir ton flanc et gonfler ton ventre;

And the priest shall charge the woman with an oath of imprecation, and the priest shall say unto the woman, The Lord then make thee a curse and an oath among thy people, when the Lord doth cause thy thigh to fall away, and thy belly to swell;

22 et que ces eaux de malédiction s’introduisent dans tes entrailles, pour faire gonfler le ventre et dépérir le flanc!" Et la femme répondra: "Amen! Amen!"

And these waters that bring the curse shall go into thy bowels, to cause the belly to swell, and the thigh to fall away; and the woman shall say, Amen, amen.

23 Le pontife écrira ces malédictions sur un bulletin, et les effacera dans les eaux amères;

And the priest shall write these curses on a roll, and he shall blot them out with the bitter waters.

24 et il fera boire à la femme les eaux amères de la malédiction, afin que ces eaux de malédiction portent dans son sein l’amertume.

And he shall cause the woman to drink the bitter waters that bring the curse: and the waters that bring the curse shall enter into her for bitterness.

25 Puis le pontife prendra des mains de la femme l’oblation de jalousie; il balancera cette oblation devant le Seigneur, et l’approchera de l’autel.

And the priest shall take out of the woman's hand the meat-offering of jealousy, and he shall wave the meat-offering before the Lord, and bring it near to the altar:

26 Le pontife prendra une poignée de cette oblation comme mémorial qu’il fera fumer sur l’autel. C’Est alors qu’il fera boire à cette femme le breuvage.

And the priest shall take a handful from the meat-offering, as its memorial, and burn it upon the altar, and after that shall he cause the woman to drink the water.

27 Lorsqu’il le lui aura fait boire, il arrivera que, si elle s’est souillée et a trahi son époux, ce breuvage de malédiction portera dans son sein l’amertume: il fera gonfler son ventre, dépérir son flanc; et cette femme deviendra un sujet d’imprécation parmi son peuple.

And when he hath made her drink the water, then shall it come to pass, if she have been defiled, and have committed a trespass against her husband, that the waters that bring the curse shall enter into her, for bitterness, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall fall away; and the woman shall become a curse among her people.

28 Mais si cette femme ne s’est pas souillée, si elle est pure, elle restera intacte et aura même une postérité.

And if the woman have not been defiled, but be clean: then shall she remain unharmed, and she shall conceive seed.

29 Telle est la règle concernant la jalousie, au cas qu’une femme ait dévié de ses devoirs envers son mari et se soit déshonorée,

This is the law of jealousies, when a woman goeth aside behind her husband, and hath been defiled;

30 ou si un homme, assailli d’un esprit de jalousie, avait soupçonné sa femme: il la placera en présence du Seigneur, et le pontife lui appliquera cette règle en tout point.

Or when the spirit of jealousy cometh over him, and he be jealous of his wife; and he shall place the woman before the Lord, and the priest shall do unto her altogether according to this law.

31 Cet homme sera net de toute faute, et cette femme expiera la sienne."

And the man shall be guiltless from iniquity; but this woman shall bear her iniquity.
