1 Les chefs de famille de la descendance de Ghilad, fils de Makhir, fils de Manassé, de la lignée des enfants de Joseph, se présentèrent et parlèrent ainsi devant Moïse et devant les phylarques, principaux chefs des enfants d’Israël;
Now the family heads of the clan of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh, one of the clans of Joseph, approached Moses and the leaders who were the heads of the Israelite families and addressed them,
2 ils dirent: "L’Éternel a ordonné à mon seigneur d’attribuer le pays en héritage, par la voie du sort, aux enfants d’Israël; d’autre part, mon seigneur a été chargé par l’Éternel d’attribuer l’héritage de Celofhad, notre frère, à ses filles.
saying, “When the LORD commanded my lord to give the land as an inheritance to the Israelites by lot, He also commanded him to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.
3 Or, si elles contractent mariage dans quelqu’une des autres tribus des enfants d’Israël, leur héritage sera retranché de l’héritage de nos pères, s’ajoutera à l’héritage de la tribu où elles auront passé, et notre lot patrimonial en sera amoindri.
But if they marry any of the men from the other tribes of Israel, their inheritance will be withdrawn from the portion of our fathers and added to the tribe into which they marry. So our allotted inheritance would be taken away.
4 Lors même que le jubilé aura lieu pour les enfants d’Israël, leur héritage à elles restera joint à celui de la tribu où elles auront passé, et le patrimoine de la tribu de nos pères en restera diminué d’autant."
And when the Jubilee for the Israelites comes, their inheritance will be added to the tribe into which they marry and taken away from the tribe of our fathers.”
5 Et Moïse donna aux enfants d’Israël, sur l’ordre de l’Éternel, les instructions suivantes: "La tribu des enfants de Joseph a raison.
So at the word of the LORD, Moses commanded the Israelites: “The tribe of the sons of Joseph speaks correctly.
6 Voici ce que l’Éternel a prescrit au sujet des filles de Celofhad: elles pourront épouser qui bon leur semblera; toutefois, c’est dans une famille de leur tribu paternelle qu’elles doivent contracter mariage.
This is what the LORD has commanded concerning the daughters of Zelophehad: They may marry anyone they please, provided they marry within a clan of the tribe of their father.
7 De la sorte, aucun héritage, chez les enfants d’Israël, ne sera transporté d’une tribu à une autre, mais chacun des enfants d’Israël demeurera attaché à l’héritage de la tribu de ses pères.
No inheritance in Israel may be transferred from tribe to tribe, because each of the Israelites is to retain the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
8 Toute fille appelée à hériter, parmi les tribus des enfants d’Israël, devra épouser quelqu’un qui appartienne à la tribu de son père; afin que les enfants d’Israël possèdent chacun l’héritage de leurs pères,
Every daughter who possesses an inheritance from any Israelite tribe must marry within a clan of the tribe of her father, so that every Israelite will possess the inheritance of his fathers.
9 et qu’il n’y ait pas d’évolution d’héritage d’une tribu à une tribu différente, les tribus des enfants d’Israël devant, chacune, conserver leur héritage."
No inheritance may be transferred from one tribe to another, for each tribe of Israel must retain its inheritance.”
10 Comme l’Éternel l’avait ordonné à Moïse, ainsi agirent les filles de Celofhad.
So the daughters of Zelophehad did as the LORD had commanded Moses.
11 Mahla, Tirça, Hogla, Milka et Noa se marièrent avec les fils de leurs oncles.
Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to cousins on their father’s side.
12 Ce fut donc dans les familles issues de Manassé, fils de Joseph, qu’elles se marièrent, et leur héritage resta dans la tribu de leur souche paternelle.
They married within the clans of the descendants of Manasseh son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained within the tribe of their father’s clan.
13 Tels sont les préceptes et les statuts que l’Éternel imposa, par l’organe de Moïse, aux enfants d’Israël, dans les plaines de Moab, au bord du Jourdain vers Jéricho.
These are the commandments and ordinances that the LORD gave the Israelites through Moses on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho.
