1 Alors s’approchèrent les filles de Celofhad, fils de Héfer, fils de Ghilad, fils de Makhir, fils de Manassé, de la descendance de Manassé, fils de Joseph, lesquelles filles avaient nom Mailla, Noa, Hogla, Milca et Tirça;

Then came near the daughters of Zelophehad, son of Hepher, son of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh pertaining to the families of Manasseh, son of Joseph, —these being the names of his daughters, Mahlah Noah and Hoglah and Milcah, and Tirzah.

2 elles se présentèrent devant Moïse, devant Eléazar le pontife, devant les phylarques et toute la communauté, à l’entrée de la tente d’assignation, disant:

So they stood before Moses and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes, and all the assembly, —at the entrance of the tent of meeting, saying:

3 "Notre père est mort dans le désert. Toutefois, il ne faisait point partie de cette faction liguée contre le Seigneur, de la faction de Coré: c’est pour son péché qu’il est mort, et il n’avait point de fils.

Our father, died in the desert, although, he, was not among the assembly that conspired against Yahweh, in the assembly of Korah, —but, in his own sin, died he; and sons, had he none.

4 Faut-il que le nom de notre père disparaisse du milieu de sa famille, parce qu’il n’a pas laissé de fils? Donne-nous une propriété parmi les frères de notre père!"

Wherefore should the name of our father be withdrawn out of the midst of his family, because he had no son? Give ye unto us a possession, in the midst of the brethren of our father.

5 Moïse déféra leur cause à l’Éternel.

And Moses brought near their cause before Yahweh.

6 Et l’Éternel parla ainsi à Moïse:

Then spake Yahweh unto Moses, saying:

7 "Les filles de Celofhad ont raison. Tu dois leur accorder un droit d’hérédité parmi les frères de leur père, et leur transmettre l’héritage de leur père.

A right thing, are the daughters of Zelophehad speaking: Thou shalt, surely give, them a possession for an inheritance, in the midst of the brethren of their father, —and shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass over unto them.

8 Et tu parleras en ces termes aux enfants d’Israël: Si un homme meurt sans laisser de fils, vous ferez passer son héritage à sa fille.

And unto the sons of Israel, shalt thou speak, saying, —When, any man, shall die, having no son, then shall ye cause his inheritance to pass over to his daughter.

9 S’Il n’a pas de fille, vous donnerez son héritage à ses frères.

And, if he hath no daughter, then shall ye give his inheritance unto his, brethren.

10 S’Il n’a pas de frères, vous donnerez son héritage aux frères de son père.

And if he hath no brethren, then shall ye give his inheritance unto the brethren of his father.

11 Et si son père n’a pas laissé de frères, vous donnerez son héritage au plus proche parent qu’il aura dans sa famille, lequel en deviendra possesseur. Ce sera pour les enfants d’Israël une règle de droit, ainsi que l’Éternel l’a prescrit à Moïse."

And, if his father hath no brethren, then shall ye give his inheritance unto his blood-relation that is near unto him of his family, and he shall possess it, —So shall it serve the sons of Israel as a regulative statute, As Yahweh commanded Moses.

12 L’Éternel dit à Moïse: "Monte sur cette hauteur des Abarîm, pour contempler le pays que j’ai donné aux enfants d’Israël.

And Yahweh said unto Moses, Go up into this mount of Abarim, —and see, the land which I have given unto the sons of Israel;

13 Quand tu l’auras contemplé, tu iras rejoindre tes pères, toi aussi, comme l’a fait Aaron ton frère;

And, when thou hast seen it, then shalt thou also be withdrawn unto thy kinsfolk, —as Aaron thy brother was withdrawn;

14 parce que vous avez contrevenu à ma parole dans le désert de Cîn, lors de la querelle soulevée par la communauté, au lieu de faire éclater devant eux ma sainteté par les eaux." Ce sont les eaux de Meribath-Kadêch, au désert de Cîn.

because ye resisted my bidding—in the desert of Zin when the assembly contended, —that ye should hallow me regarding the waters, before their eyes, —the same, were the waters of Meribah, of Kadesh in the desert of Zin.

15 Alors Moïse parla à l’Éternel en ces termes:

Then spake Moses unto Yahweh saying:

16 "Que l’Éternel, le Dieu des esprits de toute chair, institue un chef sur cette communauté,

Let Yahweh, God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the assembly;

17 qui marche sans cesse à leur tête et qui dirige tous leurs mouvements, afin que la communauté de l’Éternel ne soit pas comme un troupeau sans pasteur."

who may go out before them and who may come in before them, and who may take them out and who may bring them in, —that the assembly of Yahweh become not as sheep that have no shepherd.

18 Et l’Éternel dit à Moïse: "Fais approcher de toi Josué, fils de Noun, homme animé de mon esprit, et impose ta main sur lui.

And Yahweh said unto Moses: Take thee Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is spirit, —then shalt thou lean thy hand upon him;

19 Tu le mettras en présence d’Eléazar le pontife et de toute la communauté, et lui donneras ses instructions devant eux.

and shalt cause him to stand before Eleazar the priest, and before all the assembly, —and shalt charge him before their eyes;

20 Tu lui communiqueras une partie de ta majesté, afin que toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël lui obéisse.

and shalt put some of thine honour upon him, —that all the assembly of the sons of Israel may hearken.

21 II devra se présenter devant le pontife Eléazar, qui interrogera pour lui l’oracle des Ourîm devant le Seigneur: c’est à sa voix qu’ils partiront, à sa voix qu’ils rentreront, lui-même aussi bien que tous les enfants d’Israël et toute la communauté."

And, before Eleazar the priest, shall he stand, and shall ask by him for the decision of the Lights, before Yahweh, —at the bidding thereof, shall they go out, and at the bidding thereof, shall they come in—he, and all the sons of Israel with him, even all the assembly.

22 Moïse fit comme l’Éternel lui avait prescrit: il prit Josué, le mit en présence du pontife Eléazar et de toute la communauté,

And Moses did as Yahweh commanded him, —and took Joshua, and caused him to stand before Eleazar the priest, and before all the assembly;

23 lui imposa les mains et lui donna ses instructions, comme l’Éternel l’avait dit par l’organe de Moïse.

and leaned his hands upon him and charged him, —As Yahweh spake by the hand of Moses.
