1 Le Cananéen, roi d’Arad, qui habitait au midi, ayant appris qu’Israël s’acheminait par ces régions, attaqua les Israélites et en fit quelques-uns prisonniers.
And when the Canaanite, the king of 'Arad, who dwelt in the south, heard that Israel was coming by the way of the spies: he made an attack on Israel, and took from them some prisoners.
2 Mais Israël fit un vœu à l’Éternel en disant: "Si tu livres ce peuple en mon pouvoir, je vouerais ses villes à l’anathème."
And Israel made a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou wilt but deliver this people into my hand, then will I devote their cities.
3 L’Éternel écouta la voix d’Israël et lui livra les Cananéens; et on les frappa d’anathème, eux et leurs villes, et l’on donna à ce lieu le nom de Horma.
And the Lord hearkened to the voice of Israel, and he delivered up the Canaanites; and they devoted them and their cities: and they called the name of the place Chormah.
4 Ils partirent de Hor-la-Montagne dans la direction de la mer des Joncs, pour tourner le pays d’Edom. Le peuple perdit courage pendant cette marche,
And they set forward from mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, to go round the land of Edom: and the spirit of the people became impatient because of the way.
5 et il se plaignit de Dieu et de Moïse: "Pourquoi nous avez-vous tirés de l’Egypte, pour nous faire mourir dans ce désert? Car il n’y a point de pain, point d’eau, et nous sommes excédés de ce misérable aliment."
And the people spoke against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul loatheth this miserable bread.
6 Alors l’Éternel suscita contre le peuple les serpents brûlants, qui mordirent le peuple, et il périt une multitude d’Israélites.
And the Lord let loose against the people poisonous serpents, and they bit the people; and there died much people of Israel.
7 Et le peuple s’adressa à Moïse, et ils dirent: "Nous avons péché en parlant contre l’Éternel et contre toi; intercède auprès de l’Éternel, pour qu’il détourne de nous ces serpents!" Et Moïse intercéda pour le peuple.
And the people then came to Moses, and they said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against thee; pray unto the Lord, that he take away from us the serpents. And Moses prayed for the people.
8 L’Éternel dit à Moïse: "Fais toi-même un serpent et place-le au haut d’une perche: quiconque aura été mordu, qu’il le regarde et il vivra!"
And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thyself a serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that whoever is bitten shall look at it, and he shall live.
9 Et Moïse fit un serpent d’airain, le fixa sur une perche; et alors, si quelqu’un était mordu par un serpent, il levait les yeux vers le serpent d’airain et était sauvé.
And Moses made a serpent of copper, and put it upon a pole; and it came to pass, that, when a serpent had bitten any man, and he looked up to the serpent of copper, he remained alive.
10 Les enfants d’Israël levèrent le camp, puis campèrent à Oboth.
And the children of Israel set forward, and encamped in Oboth.
11 Partis d’Oboth, ils campèrent à lyyê-Haabarîm, dans le désert situé devant Moab, vers le soleil levant.
And they journeyed from Oboth, and encamped at 'Iye-ha'abarim, in the wilderness, which is before Moab, toward the rising of the sun.
12 De là ils repartirent et campèrent dans la vallée de Zéred.
From there they set forward and encamped in the valley of Zered.
13 De là ils repartirent et campèrent sur la rive de l’Arnon située dans le désert et partant du territoire des Amorréens; car l’Arnon est la frontière de Moab, entre Moab et le territoire amorréen.
From there they set forward, and encamped on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wilderness, and which cometh out of the boundary of the Emorites; for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and between the Emorites.
14 C’Est pourquoi l’on cite, dans l’histoire des guerres du Seigneur, "Vaheb en Soufa, et les affluents de l’Arnon;
Therefore mention is made in the book of the wars of the Lord, of Vaheb in Supha, and of the brooks of Arnon,
15 et encore le bassin des rivières, qui s’étend vers Chébeth-Ar et confine à la frontière de Moab…"
And the descent of the brooks, that turneth toward Shebeth-'Ar, and leaneth upon the border of Moab;
16 Puis, ils gagnèrent Beêr, ce puits à propos duquel le Seigneur dit à Moïse: "Assemble le peuple, je veux lui donner de l’eau."
And from there to the well; this is the well where the Lord said unto Moses, Assemble the people and I will give them water.
17 C’Est alors qu’Israël chanta ce cantique: "Jaillis, ô source! Acclamez-la!…
Then did Israel sing this song, Come up, O well; sing ye unto it:
18 Ce puits, des princes l’ont creusé, les plus grands du peuple l’ont ouvert, avec le sceptre, avec leurs verges!…" Et de Midbar ils allèrent à Mattana;
Well, which the princes have dug, which the nobles of the people have hollowed out with the sceptre, with their staves; — and from the wilderness to Mattanah;
19 de Mattana à Nahalïel; de Nahalïel à Bamoth;
And from Mattanah to Nachaliel; and from Nachaliel to Bamoth;
20 et de Bamoth, au plateau qui est dans la campagne de Moab, au sommet du Pisga, d’où l’on découvrait l’étendue du désert.
And from Bamoth to the valley, which is in the fields of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh toward the desert.
21 Israël envoya des députés à Sihôn, roi des Amorréens, pour lui dire:
And Israel sent messengers unto Sichon the king of the Emorites, saying,
22 "Je voudrais passer par ton pays. Nous ne traverserons ni champs ni vignobles, nous ne boirons point de l’eau des citernes; nous irons par la route royale, jusqu’à ce que nous ayons passé ta frontière."
Let me pass through thy land; we will not turn aside into field, or into vineyard; we will not drink the water of a well: by the king's highway will we go along, until we have passed thy border.
23 Mais Sihôn ne permit point à Israël de traverser son territoire; et Sihôn rassembla tout son peuple, marcha à la rencontre d’Israël, vers le désert et atteignit Yahça, où il livra la bataille à Israël.
But Sichon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border; and Sichon assembled all his people together; and went out against Israel into the wilderness; and he came to Yahaz, and fought against Israel.
24 Israël le passa au fil de l’épée, et il conquît son pays depuis l’Arnon jusqu’au Jaboc, jusqu’aux possessions des Ammonites; car elle était forte, la frontière des enfants d’Ammon.
And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from Arnon unto Yabbok, even unto the children of 'Ammon; for the border of the children of 'Ammon was strong.
25 Israël s’empara de toutes ces villes; et il s’établit dans toutes les villes des Amorréens, à Hesbon et dans toutes ses dépendances.
And Israel took all these cities; and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Emorites, in Cheshbon, and in all the villages thereof.
26 Car Hesbon était devenue la ville de Sihôn, roi des Amorréens, celui-ci ayant fait la guerre au précédent roi de Moab, et lui ayant pris tout son territoire jusqu’à l’Arnon.
For Cheshbon was the city of Sichon the king of the Emorites; and he had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, up to the Arnon.
27 C’Est à ce propos que les poètes disaient: "Venez à Hesbon! Cité de Sihôn, qu’elle se relève et s’affermisse!
Therefore said the poets, Come into Cheshbon, let the city of Sichon be built and established.
28 Car un feu a jailli de Hesbon, une flamme, de la ville de Sihôn, qui a dévoré Ar-en-Moab, les maîtres des hauteurs d’Arnon.
For a fire is gone out of Cheshbon, a flame from the city of Sichon: it hath consumed 'Ar-Moab, the men of the high places of the Arnon.
29 C’Est fait de toi. Moab! Tu es perdu, peuple de Camôs!… Ses fils, il les laisse mettre en fuite, ses filles, emmener captives, par un roi amorréen, par Sihôn!
Woe to thee, Moab! thou art lost, O people of Kemosh: he hath suffered his sons to become fugitives, and his daughters to go into captivity, unto the king of the Emorites, Sichon.
30 Hesbon perdu, nous les avons poursuivis de nos traits jusqu’à Dibôn; nous avons dévasté jusqu’à Nôfah, même jusqu’à Mèdeba!…"
We have thrown them down; lost is Cheshbon even unto Dibon, and we have laid waste [all] up to Nophach, which reacheth unto Medeba.
31 Israël s’établit donc dans le pays des Amorréens.
Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Emorites.
32 Moïse envoya explorer Yazêr; on s’empara de ses dépendances, et l’on déposséda les Amorréens qui y demeuraient.
And Moses sent to spy out Ya'zer, and they captured the villages thereof, and drove out the Emorites that were there.
33 Puis ils se dirigèrent, en montant plus haut, vers le Basan. Og, roi du Basan, s’avança à leur rencontre avec tout son peuple, pour leur livrer bataille, à Edréi.
And they turned and went up by the way to Bashan; and 'Og, the king of Bashan, went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.
34 Mais l’Éternel dit à Moïse: "Ne le crains point, car je le livre en tes mains, lui et tout son peuple, et son pays; et tu le traiteras comme tu as traité Sihôn, roi des Amorréens, qui résidait à Hesbon."
And the Lord said unto Moses, Fear him not; for into thy hand have I delivered him, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do unto him as thou hast done unto Sichon, the king of the Emorites, who dwelt at Cheshbon.
35 Et ils le battirent, ainsi que ses fils et tout son peuple, tellement qu’ils n’en laissèrent survivre aucun; et ils conquirent son territoire.
And they smote him and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left unto him that escaped; and they took possession of his land.
