1 L’Éternel parla ainsi à Moïse:
Adonai spoke to Moses [Drawn out], saying,
2 "Envoie toi-même des hommes pour explorer le pays de Canaan, que je destine aux enfants d’Israël; vous enverrez un homme respectivement par tribu paternelle, tous éminents parmi eux."
“Send men on your behalf, that they may spy out the land of Canaan [Humbled], which I give to the children of Israel [God prevails]. Of every tribe of their fathers, you shall send a man, every one a prince among them.”
3 Et Moïse les envoya du désert de Pharan, selon la parole de l’Éternel; c’étaient tous des personnages considérables entre les enfants d’Israël.
Moses [Drawn out] sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the order of Adonai. All them were men who were heads of the children of Israel [God prevails].
4 Et voici leurs noms: pour la tribu de Ruben, Chammoûa, fils de Zakkour;
These were their names: Of the tribe of Reuben [See, a son!], Shammua the son of Zaccur.
5 pour la tribu de Siméon, Chafat, fils de Hori;
Of the tribe of Simeon [Hearing], Shaphat the son of Hori.
6 pour la tribu de Juda, Caleb, fils de Yefounné;
Of the tribe of Judah [Praised], Caleb [Dog] the son of Jephunneh.
7 pour la tribu d’Issachar, Yigal, fils de Joseph;
Of the tribe of Issachar [Hire, Reward], Igal the son of Joseph [May he add].
8 pour la tribu d’Ephraïm, Hochéa, fils de Noun;
Of the tribe of Ephraim [Fruit], Hoshea [Yah save] the son of Nun.
9 pour la tribu de Benjamin, Palti, fils de Rafou;
Of the tribe of Benjamin [Son of right hand, Son of south], Palti the son of Raphu.
10 pour la tribu de Zabulon, Gaddïel, fils de Sodi;
Of the tribe of Zebulun [Living together], Gaddiel the son of Sodi.
11 pour la tribu de Joseph formant celle de Manassé, Gaddi, fils de Çouci;
Of the tribe of Joseph [May he add], of the tribe of Manasseh [Causing to forget], Gaddi the son of Susi.
12 pour la tribu de Dan, Ammïel, fils de Ghemalli;
Of the tribe of Dan [He judged], Ammiel the son of Gemalli.
13 pour la tribu d’Asher, Sethour, fils de Mikhaêl;
Of the tribe of Asher [Happy], Sethur the son of Michael [Who is like God].
14 pour la tribu de Nephtali, Nahbi, fils de Vofsi;
Of the tribe of Naphtali [My wrestling], Nahbi the son of Vophsi.
15 pour la tribu de Gad, Gheouêl, fils de Makhi.
Of the tribe of Gad [Good fortune], Geuel the son of Machi.
16 Tels sont les noms des hommes que Moïse envoya explorer la contrée. (Moïse avait nommé Hochéa, fils de Noun: Josué).
These are the names of the men who Moses [Drawn out] sent to spy out the land. Moses [Drawn out] called Hoshea [Yah save] the son of Nun, who Moses [Drawn out] renamed Joshua [Yah Salvation].
17 Moïse leur donna donc mission d’explorer le pays de Canaan, en leur disant: "Dirigez-vous de ce côté, vers le sud, et gravissez la montagne.
Moses [Drawn out] sent them to spy out the land of Canaan [Humbled], and said to them, “Go up this way by the South, and go up into the hill country.
18 Vous observerez l’aspect de ce pays et le peuple qui l’occupe, s’il est robuste ou faible, peu nombreux ou considérable;
See the land, what it is; and the people who dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many;
19 quant au pays qu’il habite, s’il est bon ou mauvais; comment sont les villes où il demeure, des villes ouvertes ou des places fortes;
and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds;
20 quant au sol, s’il est gras ou maigre, s’il est boisé ou non. Tâchez aussi d’emporter quelques-uns des fruits du pays." C’Était alors la saison des premiers raisins.
and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. Be courageous, and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.
21 Et ils s’en allèrent explorer le pays, depuis le désert de Cîn jusqu’à Rehob, vers Hémath.
So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath.
22 Ils s’acheminèrent du côté du midi, et l’on parvint jusqu’à Hébrôn, où demeuraient Ahimân, Chêchaï et Talmaï, descendants d’Anak. Hébrôn avait été bâtie sept ans avant Tanis d’Egypte.
They went up by the South, and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt [Abode of slavery].)
23 Arrivés à la vallée d’Echkol, ils y coupèrent un sarment avec une grappe de raisin, qu’ils portèrent à deux au moyen d’une perche, de plus, quelques grenades et quelques figues.
They came to the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it on a staff between two. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs.
24 On nomma ce lieu vallée d’Echkol, à cause de la grappe qu’y avaient coupée les enfants d’Israël.
That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel [God prevails] cut down from there.
25 Ils revinrent de cette exploration du pays, au bout de quarante jours.
They teshuvah ·completely returned· from spying out the land at the end of forty days.
26 Ils allèrent trouver Moïse, Aaron et toute la communauté des enfants d’Israël, dans le désert de Pharan, à Kadêch. Ils rendirent compte à eux et à toute la communauté, leur montrèrent les fruits de la contrée,
They went and came to Moses [Drawn out], to Aaron [Light-bringer], and to all the congregation of the children of Israel [God prevails], to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them and to all the congregation. They showed them the fruit of the land.
27 et lui firent ce récit: "Nous sommes entrés dans le pays où tu nous avais envoyés; oui, vraiment, il ruisselle de lait et de miel, et voici de ses fruits.
They told him, and said, “We came to the land where you sent us. Surely it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.
28 Mais il est puissant le peuple qui habite ce pays! Puis, les villes sont fortifiées et très grandes, et même nous y avons vu des descendants d’Anak!
However the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. Moreover, we saw the children of Anak there.
29 Amalec habite la région du midi; le Héthéen, le Jébuséen et l’Amorréen habitent la montagne, et le Cananéen occupe le littoral et la rive du Jourdain."
Amalek [Man who licks up] dwells in the land of the South. The Hittite [Descendant of Trembling fear], the Jebusite [Descendants of Thresher], and the Amorite [Descendants of Talkers] dwell in the hill country. The Canaanite [Descendant of Humbled] dwells by the sea, and along the side of the Jordan [Descender].”
30 Caleb fit taire le peuple soulevé contre Moïse, et dit: "Montons, montons-y et prenons-en possession, car certes nous en serons vainqueurs!"
Caleb [Dog] stilled the people before Moses [Drawn out], and said, “Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it!”
31 Mais les hommes qui étaient partis avec lui, dirent: "Nous ne pouvons marcher contre ce peuple, car il est plus fort que nous."
But the men who went up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.”
32 Et ils décrièrent le pays qu’ils avaient exploré, en disant aux enfants d’Israël: "Le pays que nous avons parcouru pour l’explorer est un pays qui dévorerait ses habitants; quant au peuple que nous y avons vu, ce sont tous gens de haute taille.
They brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out to the children of Israel [God prevails], saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eats up its inhabitants; and all the people who we saw in it are men of great stature.
33 Nous y avons même vu les Nefilîm, les enfants d’Anak, descendants des Nefilîm: nous étions à nos propres yeux comme des sauterelles, et ainsi étions-nous à leurs yeux."
There we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim. We were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.”
