Juges 7
1 Dès le matin, Jérubbaal autrement dit Gédéon alla se camper avec tout son monde près d’En-Harod, ayant ainsi au nord le camp de Madian, qui commençait à la colline de Moré et s’étendait dans la vallée.
Then Jerubbaal, the same, is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and encamped by the fountain of Harod, —and, the camp of Midian, was on the north of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the vale.
2 Le Seigneur dit à Gédéon: "Ton armée est trop nombreuse pour que je lui livre Madian. Israël pourrait s’attribuer l’honneur qui m’appartient, en disant: "C’Est à moi-même que je dois la victoire."
And Yahweh said unto Gideon, Too many, are the people that are with thee, for me to deliver the Midianites into their hand, —lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand, hath saved me.
3 Donc, porte aux oreilles du peuple cet avis: Que ceux qui ont peur et qui tremblent rebroussent chemin et tournent du côté de la montagne de Galaad!" Vingt-deux mille hommes se retirèrent, et il en resta dix mille.
Now, therefore, proclaim, I pray thee, in the ears of the people, saying, Whoso feareth and trembleth—let him turn and go back from Mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty-two thousand, and, ten thousand, remained.
4 Dieu dit à Gédéon: "Ils sont encore trop; fais-les descendre du côté de l’eau, où je procéderai pour toi à leur épuration: celui dont je te dirai qu’il aille avec toi, celui-là te suivra; mais tous ceux dont je te dirai: Un tel ne doit pas te suivre, ceux-là n’iront point."
Then said Yahweh unto Gideon—Yet, are the people too many, take them down unto the waters, that I may prove them for thee, there, —and it shall be, that, he of whom I say unto thee, This one, shall go with thee, the same, shall go with thee, and, every one of whom I say unto thee, This one, shall not go with thee, the same, shall not go.
5 Gédéon conduisit la troupe près de l’eau, et le Seigneur lui dit: "Ceux qui laperont l’eau avec la langue, comme lape le chien, tu les feras mettre à part, ainsi que ceux qui s’agenouilleront pour boire."
So he took down the people unto the waters, —and Yahweh said unto Gideon—Every one that lappeth with his tongue of the water, as a dog lappeth, thou shalt set him by himself, likewise, every one that boweth down upon his knees, to drink.
6 Or, le nombre de ceux qui avaient bu dans leur main fut de trois cents hommes; tout le reste de la troupe s’était agenouillé pour boire.
And so it was, that, the number of them that lapped with their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men, —but, all the rest of the people, bowed down on their knees, to drink water.
7 Et le Seigneur dit à Gédéon: "C’Est par ces trois cents hommes qui ont bu dans leurs mains que je vous donnerai la victoire, et que je livrerai Madian en ta main. Que les autres s’en retournent chacun chez eux."
Then said Yahweh unto Gideon—By the three hundred men that lapped, will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thy hand; and let, all [the rest of] the people, go every man to his own place.
8 La troupe restante se munit de provisions et de ses trompes; Gédéon renvoya tous les autres Israélites dans leurs foyers, ne gardant que les trois cents hommes. Le camp des Madianites s’étendait en bas, dans la vallée.
So the people took provisions in their hand, and their horns, but, every man of Israel besides, sent he away every man to his home, whereas, the three hundred men, he retained. Now, the camp of Midian, was beneath him in the vale.
9 Cette même nuit, l’Eternel lui dit: "Va, attaque le camp! Je le livre en ta main.
And it came to pass, on that night, that Yahweh said unto him, Arise! go down against the camp, —for I have delivered it into thy hand.
10 Si toutefois tu n’oses l’attaquer, descends-y avec Poura, ton serviteur:
Or, if, thou, art afraid to go down, go down—thou and Purah thy young man, unto the camp;
11 tu entendras ce qu’ils disent, et cela te donnera du cœur pour attaquer le camp." Et il descendit, accompagné de son serviteur Poura, aux abords du camp où étaient les avant-postes.
so shalt thou hear what they shall say, —and, afterward, shall thy hands grow strong, and thou shalt go down against the camp. Then went he down, he and Purah his young man, unto the outmost part of the armed men that were in the camp.
12 Madian, Amalec et toutes les peuplades d’Orient se déployaient dans la vallée, nombreux comme les sauterelles; et l’on ne pouvait compter leurs chameaux, pressés comme le sable qui est au bord de la mer.
Now, the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the sons of the east, were lying along in the vale, like locusts for multitude, —their camels also, were without number, as the sand that is by the sea side, for multitude.
13 Arrivé là, Gédéon entendit un homme qui racontait un songe à son camarade et disait: "J’Ai eu un songe, où je voyais une miche de pain d’orge roulant dans le camp des Madianites; parvenue à l’une des tentes, elle la heurta et la fit tomber, de sorte qu’elle se renversa sens dessus dessous."
And Gideon came in, and lo! a man relating to his neighbour a dream, —and he said—Lo! a dream, have I dreamt, and lo! a round cake of barley bread tumbling into the camp of Midian, and it came as far as the tent—and smote it that it fell, and turned it upside down, and the tent lay along.
14 L’Autre répondit: "Ceci n’est autre chose que l’épée de Gédéon, fils de Joas, l’Israélite; Dieu a livré en son pouvoir les Madianites et tout leur camp!"
Then responded his neighbour and said: —Nothing else, is this, than the sword of Gideon son of Joash, a man of Israel, —God hath delivered into his hand, both Midian and all the host.
15 En entendant le récit de ce songe et son interprétation, Gédéon se prosterna; puis il retourna au camp d’Israël et s’écria: "Marchez! l’Eternel vous livre le camp de Madian!"
And it was so, when Gideon heard the story of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he bowed himself down, —and returned unto the camp of Israel, and said—Arise! for Yahweh hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.
16 Il divisa les trois cents hommes en trois compagnies, et les munit tous de trompes et de cruches vides, où brûlaient des torches.
And he divided the three hundred men, into three companies, —and put horns into the hands of them all, with empty pitchers, and torches inside the pitchers.
17 Et il leur dit: "Regardez-moi faire et faites comme moi. Je vais m’avancer à l’entrée du camp, et alors, ce que je ferai, vous le ferez aussi.
Then he said unto them, On me, shall ye look, and, in like manner, shall ye do, —and lo! when I am coming unto the outermost part of the camp, then shall it be, that, as I do, so, shall ye do.
18 Je sonnerai de la trompe, ainsi que tous ceux de ma compagnie; vous en sonnerez pareillement, tout autour du camp, et vous crierez: Pour l’Eternel et pour Gédéon!"
When I shall blow with the horn, I and all who are with me, then shall, ye also, round about all the camp, blow with your horns, and shall say, For Yahweh and for Gideon!
19 Gédéon et ses cent hommes arrivèrent à l’entrée du camp, au commencement de la seconde veille, comme on venait de poser les sentinelles; ils sonnèrent de leurs trompes et brisèrent les cruches qu’ils avaient en main.
So Gideon came, and the hundred men that were with him, unto the outermost part of the camp, at the beginning of the middle watch, they had but, newly set, the watchers, —and they blew with the horns, and brake in pieces the pitchers, that were in their hand.
20 Les trois compagnies sonnèrent donc de la trompe et brisèrent les cruches, saisirent les torches de la main gauche et de la droite les trompes pour sonner, en criant: Guerre pour l’Eternel et pour Gédéon!
Yea the three companies blew with the horns, and shivered the pitchers, and caught hold—with their left hands—of the torches, while, in their right hands, were the horns, to blow with, —and they cried, A sword for Yahweh, and for Gideon!
21 Ils restèrent chacun à leur place autour du camp, tandis que tous ceux du camp couraient et s’enfuyaient en poussant des cris.
And they stood still, every man in his place, round about the camp, —and all the host ran and shouted, and fled.
22 Et les trois cents trompes continuant à sonner, Dieu les fit s’entre-tuer de leurs épées, dans tout le camp; et cette armée s’enfuit jusqu’à Beth-ha-Chitta, vers Cerêra, et jusqu’à la lisière d’Abel-Mehola, près de Tabbat.
When the three hundred blew the horns, Yahweh set the sword of every man, against his neighbour, and against all the host, —and the host fled, as far as the Place of Acacias, towards Zererath, as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath.
23 Alors des Israélites de la tribu de Nephtali, de celle d’Aser, de toute celle de Manassé, coururent aux armes et se mirent à la poursuite de Madian.
And the men of Israel were called together, out of Naphtali and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, —and pursued Midian.
24 Gédéon avait envoyé des courriers dans toute la montagne d’Ephraïm, avec cet ordre: "Descendez au-devant des Madianites et coupez-leur tous les gués jusqu’à Beth-Bara et les passages du Jourdain." Et tous les gens d’Ephraïm se rassemblèrent et ils occupèrent les gués jusqu’à Beth-Bara et le Jourdain,
And, messengers, did Gideon send through all the hill country of Ephraim, saying—Go down to meet Midian, and capture, before them, the waters, as far as Beth-barah, and the Jordan. So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and captured the waters, as far as Beth-barah, and the Jordan.
25 firent prisonniers les deux princes de Madian, Oreb et Zeêb, tuèrent Oreb au rocher d’Oreb, et Zeêb au pressoir de Zeêb, continuèrent la poursuite de Madian, et apportèrent les têtes d’Oreb et de Zeêb à Gédéon, de l’autre côté du Jourdain.
And they captured the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, and slew Oreb at Oreb’s Rock, and, Zeeb, they slew at Zeeb’s Winepress, and pursued Midian, —and, the heads of Oreb and Zeeb, brought they in unto Gideon at the ford of the Jordan.
