Juges 6

1 Les enfants d’Israël ayant de nouveau mécontenté l’Eternel, il les abandonna pendant sept ans au pouvoir des Madianites.

And the sons of Israel do evil in the eyes of YHWH, and YHWH gives them into the hand of Midian [for] seven years,

2 Accablés par la supériorité de Madian, les Israélites, pour y échapper, utilisèrent les creux des montagnes, les souterrains et les châteaux forts.

and the hand of Midian is strong against Israel, [so] the sons of Israel have made for themselves the nooks which [are] in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds [to hide] from the presence of Midian.

3 Or, quand Israël avait fait les semailles, Madian accourait avec Amalec et les peuplades orientales, et venait l’attaquer.

And it has been, if Israel has sowed, that Midian has come up, and Amalek, and the sons of the east, indeed, they have come up against him,

4 Ils occupaient son pays, détruisaient les produits de la terre jusque vers Gaza, et ne laissaient en Israël aucune subsistance, non plus que brebis, bœufs ni ânes.

and encamp against them, and destroy the increase of the land until your entering Gaza; and they leave no sustenance in Israel, either sheep, or ox, or donkey;

5 Car eux-mêmes venaient avec leurs troupeaux et leurs tentes, ils arrivaient en masse comme les sauterelles, eux et leurs chameaux étaient innombrables; et ils envahissaient le pays pour le ravager.

for they and their livestock come up, with their tents; they come in as the fullness of the locust for multitude, and of them and of their livestock there is no number, and they come into the land to destroy it.

6 lsraël tomba ainsi dans une misère extrême par le fait de Madian, et il se plaignit à l’Eternel.

And Israel is very weak from the presence of Midian, and the sons of Israel cry to YHWH.

7 Comme les enfants d’Israël se plaignaient à l’Eternel au sujet de Madian,

And it comes to pass, when the sons of Israel have cried to YHWH concerning Midian,

8 l’Eternel leur envoya un personnage inspiré, qui leur dit: "Ainsi a parlé l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël: C’Est moi qui vous ai fait monter de l’Egypte, qui vous ai tirés de la maison de servitude;

that YHWH sends a man, a prophet, to the sons of Israel, and he says to them, “Thus said YHWH, God of Israel: I have brought you up out of Egypt, and I bring you out from a house of servants,

9 je vous ai sauvés de la main des Egyptiens et de la main de vos autres oppresseurs; j’ai chassé ces derniers devant vous et vous ai donné leur pays.

and I deliver you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all your oppressors, and I cast them out from your presence, and I give their land to you,

10 Et je vous ai dit: "C’Est moi, I’Eternel, qui suis votre Dieu! ne révérez point les dieux des Amorréens dont vous habitez le pays!" Mais vous n’avez pas écouté ma voix…"

and I say to you, I [am] your God YHWH, you do not fear the gods of the Amorite in whose land you are dwelling—and you have not listened to My voice.”

11 Or, un ange du Seigneur vint se placer sous un térébinthe près d’Ofra, appartenant à Joas l’Abiézrite, au moment où Gédéon, son fils, battait du froment dans le pressoir pour le mettre à l’abri des Madianites.

And the Messenger of YHWH comes and sits under the oak which [is] in Ophrah, which [is] to Joash the Abi-Ezrite, and his son Gideon is beating out wheat in the winepress, to remove [it] from the presence of the Midianites;

12 L’Ange du Seigneur lui apparut et lui dit: "L’Eternel est avec toi, vaillant homme!"

and the Messenger of YHWH appears to him and says to him, “YHWH [is] with you, O mighty man of valor.”

13 Et Gédéon lui répondit: "Hélas! Seigneur, si l’Eternel est avec nous, d’où vient tout ce qui nous arrive? Que sont devenus tous ses prodiges que nous ont contés nos pères, disant: N’Est-ce pas l’Eternel qui nous a fait sortir de l’Egypte? Maintenant l’Eternel nous délaisse et nous livre aux mains de Madian!"

And Gideon says to Him, “O my Lord, [if] YHWH is indeed with us, then why has all this found us? And where [are] all His wonders which our fathers recounted to us, saying, Has YHWH not brought us up out of Egypt? And now YHWH has left us, and gives us into the hand of Midian.”

14 Alors l’Eternel s’adressa à lui, disant: "Va avec ce courage qui t’anime, et tu sauveras Israël de la main de Madian: c’est moi qui t’envoie."

And YHWH turns to him and says, “Go in this—your power; and you have saved Israel out of the hand of Midian—have I not sent you?”

15 Gédéon répliqua: "De grâce, mon Dieu, par quel moyen sauverais-je Israël? Ma famille est la moindre en Manassé, et moi je suis le plus jeune dans la maison de mon père!"

And he says to Him, “O my Lord, with what do I save Israel? Behold, my chief [is] weak in Manasseh, and I [am] the least in the house of my father.”

16 "C’Est que je serai avec toi, répondit l’Eternel, et tu battras les Madianites comme un seul homme."

And YHWH says to him, “Because I am with you—you have struck the Midianites as one man.”

17 "Eh bien! dit-il, si j’ai trouvé faveur à tes yeux, tu me prouveras par un signe que c’est toi-même qui me parles.

And he says to Him, “Now if I have found grace in Your eyes, then You have done a sign for me that You are speaking with me.

18 Ne t’éloigne pas d’ici, je te prie, que je ne sois revenu près de toi: je vais quérir mon offrande et la déposer devant toi." Il répondit: "J’Attendrai ton retour."

Please do not move from here until my coming to You, and I have brought out my present, and put it before You”; and He says, “I abide until your return.”

19 Et Gédéon rentra, apprêta un jeune chevreau et des pains azymes d’un êpha de farine, mit la viande dans une corbeille et le bouillon dans un pot, porta le tout sous le térébinthe et le lui offrit.

And Gideon has gone in, and prepares a kid of the goats, and an ephah of flour [worth] of unleavened things; he has put the flesh in a basket, and he has put the broth in a pot, and he brings [them] out to Him, to the place of the oak, and brings [them] near.

20 L’Ange de Dieu lui dit: "Prends la viande avec les azymes, pose-les sur ce rocher, et répands le bouillon"; ce qu’il fit.

And the Messenger of God says to him, “Take the flesh and the unleavened things, and place [them] on this rock—and pour out the broth”; and he does so.

21 Et l’ange de l’Eternel, de l’extrémité du bâton qu’il tenait à la main, toucha la viande et les azymes: soudain un feu sortit du rocher, consuma viande et azymes, et l’ange de l’Eternel disparut à ses yeux.

And the Messenger of YHWH puts forth the end of the staff which [is] in His hand, and comes against the flesh, and against the unleavened things, and the fire goes up out of the rock and consumes the flesh and the unleavened things—and the Messenger of YHWH has gone from his eyes.

22 Gédéon vit alors que c’était un ange, et il s’écria: "Malheur à moi, Seigneur Dieu! car c’est un ange de l’Eternel que j’ai vu face à face."

And Gideon sees that He [is] the Messenger of YHWH, and Gideon says, “Aah, Lord YHWH! For so I have looked on the Messenger of YHWH face to face!”

23 "Rassure-toi, lui dit le Seigneur, ne crains rien: tu ne mourras pas."

And YHWH says to him, “Peace to you; do not fear; you do not die.”

24 Gédéon bâtit là au Seigneur un autel, qu’il appela Adonaï Chalôm; aujourd’hui encore il subsiste dans Ofra, qui est aux Abiézrites.

And Gideon builds an altar to YHWH there, and calls it YHWH-Shalom, it [is] yet in Ophrah of the Abi-Ezrites to this day.

25 Cette même nuit, l’Eternel lui dit: "Prends l’un des taureaux qui sont à ton père, le deuxième taureau, âgé de sept ans. Tu démoliras l’autel consacré à Baal par ton père, et tu abattras le bocage qui est auprès.

And it comes to pass, on that night, that YHWH says to him, “Take the young ox which your father has, and the second bullock of seven years, and you have thrown down the altar of Ba‘al which your father has, and cut down the Asherah which [is] by it,

26 Puis tu bâtiras un autel à l’Eternel, ton Dieu, au sommet de ce rocher, sur le plateau; tu prendras le deuxième taureau, et le brûleras en holocauste, sur le bois du bocage que tu auras abattu."

and you have built an altar to your God YHWH on the top of this stronghold, by the arrangement, and have taken the second bullock, and caused a burnt-offering to ascend with the wood of the Asherah which you cut down.”

27 Gédéon, aidé de dix de ses serviteurs, fit ce que l’Eternel lui avait ordonné; mais comme il n’osait, à cause de sa famille et des gens de la ville, agir en plein jour, il le fit nuitamment.

And Gideon takes ten men of his servants, and does as YHWH has spoken to him, and it comes to pass, because he has been afraid of the house of his father, and the men of the city, to do [it] by day, that he does [it] by night.

28 Au matin, quand les gens de la ville se levèrent, ils virent l’autel de Baal renversé, son bocage abattu, le deuxième taureau offert en holocauste sur l’autel nouveau,

And the men of the city rise early in the morning, and behold, the altar of Ba‘al has been broken down, and the Asherah which is by it has been cut down, and the second bullock has been offered on the altar which is built.

29 et ils se dirent l’un à l’autre: "Qui a fait cela?…" Ils s’informèrent, firent des recherches et on leur dit: "C’Est Gédéon, fils de Joas, qui en est l’auteur."

And they say to one another, “Who has done this thing?” And they inquire and seek, and they say, “Gideon son of Joash has done this thing.”

30 Alors les gens de la ville dirent à Joas: "Livre ton fils pour qu’il meure, parce qu’il a démoli l’autel de Baal et abattu le bocage attenant."

And the men of the city say to Joash, “Bring out your son, and he dies, because he has broken down the altar of Ba‘al, and because he has cut down the Asherah which [is] by it.”

31 Mais Joas dit à la foule qui l’assaillait: "Est-ce à vous de venger Baal, à vous de lui venir en aide? Qui prétend le faire mérite la mort, avant même qu’il soit jour! Si Baal est Dieu, qu’il venge lui-même son injure, son autel renversé!"

And Joash says to all who have stood against him, “You, do you plead for Ba‘al? You—do you save him? He who pleads for him is put to death during the morning; if he [is] a god he pleads against him himself, because he has broken down his altar.”

32 Gédéon fut à cette occasion, surnommé Jérubbaal, c’est-à-dire que Baal s’en prenne à lui, pour avoir démoli son autel.

And he calls him, on that day, Jerubba‘al, saying, “The Ba‘al pleads against him, because he has broken down his altar.”

33 Or, tout Madian s’était réuni avec Amalec et les peuplades orientales; ils avaient pénétré à l’intérieur et campaient dans la vallée de Jezreêl.

And all Midian and Amalek and the sons of the east have been gathered together, and pass over, and encamp in the Valley of Jezreel,

34 Soudain une inspiration divine enveloppa Gédéon; il fit sonner du cor, et les Abiézrites se groupèrent derrière lui.

and the Spirit of YHWH has clothed Gideon, and he blows with a horn, and Abi-Ezer is called after him;

35 Il envoya aussi des messagers dans tout Manassé, qui se joignit également à lui; pareillement en Aser, Zabulon, Nephtali, qui montèrent au-devant d’eux.

and he has sent messengers into all Manasseh, and it is also called after him; and he has sent messengers into Asher, and into Zebulun, and into Naphtali, and they come up to meet them.

36 Et Gédéon dit au Seigneur: "Si tu veux, par ma main, secourir Israël comme tu l’as dit,

And Gideon says to God, “If You are Savior of Israel by my hand, as You have spoken,

37 eh bien! je mets cette toison sur le sol de l’aire: s’il vient de la rosée sur la toison seule et que tout le sol reste sec, je saurai que tu veux secourir par ma main Israël, comme tu l’as promis."

behold, I am placing the fleece of wool in the threshing-floor: if dew is only on the fleece, and dryness on all the earth—then I have known that You save Israel by my hand, as You have spoken”;

38 Et il en fut ainsi. En se levant le lendemain, Gédéon pressa la toison et, de la rosée qu’il en exprima, il eut une pleine écuelle d’eau.

and it is so, and he rises early on the next day, and presses the fleece, and wrings dew out of the fleece—the fullness of the bowl of waters.

39 Gédéon dit au Seigneur: "Ne te mets pas en colère contre moi si je t’adresse encore une prière. Permets-moi seulement une nouvelle épreuve par cette toison: que la toison seule reste sèche, tandis que tout le sol sera couvert de rosée!"

And Gideon says to God, “Do not let Your anger burn against me, and I only speak this time; please let me try only this time with the fleece—please let there be only dryness on the fleece, and let there be dew on all the earth.”

40 Dieu déféra à sa demande cette nuit même: la toison seule resta sèche, le sol d’alentour fut couvert de rosée.

And God does so on that night, and there is only dryness on the fleece, and there has been dew on all the earth.
