Juges 21
1 Or, les Israélites avaient juré, à Miçpa, que nul d’entre eux ne donnerait sa fille pour épouse à un Benjamite.
Now the children of Israel swore in Massephath, saying, No man of us shall give his daughter to Benjamin for a wife.
2 Le peuple vainqueur se rendit à Béthel, y resta jusqu’au soir en présence du Seigneur, élevant la voix et versant d’abondantes larmes.
And the people came to Baethel, and sat there until evening before God: and they lifted up their voice and wept with a great weeping;
3 Ils disaient: "Eternel, Dieu d’Israël! pourquoi faut-il qu’Israël ait ce malheur de se voir privé d’une tribu entière?"
and said, Wherefore, O Lord God of Israel, has this come to pass, that to-day one tribe should be counted [as missing] from Israel?
4 Dès le lendemain de bonne heure, le peuple bâtit là un autel, offrit des holocaustes et des rémunératoires.
And it came to pass on the morrow that the people rose up early, and built there an altar, and offered up whole-burnt-offerings and peace offerings.
5 Puis ils se demandèrent qui d’entre les tribus d’Israël n’était pas venu à l’assemblée tenue devant l’Eternel; car un serment solennel avait menacé de mort quiconque ne serait pas venu à Miçpa devant l’Eternel.
And the children of Israel said, Who of all the tribes of Israel, went not up in the congregation to the Lord? for there was a great oath concerning those who went not up to the Lord to Massephath, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
6 Et maintenant les enfants d’Israël s’affligeaient au sujet de Benjamin leur frère, et ils disaient: "Une tribu a été retranchée aujourd’hui d’Israël l
And the children of Israel relented toward Benjamin their brother, and said, To-day one tribe is cut off from Israel.
7 Que ferons-nous pour procurer des femmes à ceux qui restent, alors que nous avons juré par l’Eternel de ne pas leur permettre d’épouser nos filles?
What shall we do for wives for the rest that remain? whereas we have sworn by the Lord, not to give them of our daughters for wives.
8 C’Est alors qu’ils s’informèrent si quelqu’un, parmi les tribus d’Israël, ne s’était pas rendu à Miçpa devant l’Eternel, et il se trouva que nul homme de Jabès-Galaad n’était venu au camp, dans la réunion.
And they said, What one [man is there] of the tribes of Israel, who went not up to the Lord to Massephath? and, behold, no man came to the camp from Jabis Galaad to the assembly.
9 En effet, le peuple avait été dénombré, et aucun des habitants de Jabès-Galaad n’y figurait.
And the people were numbered, and there was not there a man from the inhabitants of Jabis Galaad.
10 L’Assemblée y envoya donc douze mille guerriers, en leur donnant cet ordre: "Allez à Jabès-Galaad, et passez les habitants au fil de l’épée, même les femmes et les enfants,
And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the strongest, and they charged them, saying, Go ye and smite the inhabitants of Jabis Galaad with the edge of the sword.
11 en observant toutefois cette règle, de vouer à la mort tous les mâles et toutes les femmes ayant déjà cohabité avec un homme."
And this shall ye do: every male and every woman that has known the lying with man ye shall devote [to destruction], but the virgins ye shall save alive: and they did so.
12 Or, sur les habitants de Jabès-Galaad, il se trouva quatre cents jeunes filles, encore vierges, n’ayant eu aucun contact avec un homme; et on les conduisit au camp à Silo, qui est dans le pays de Canaan.
And they found among the inhabitants of Jabis Galaad four hundred young virgins, who had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them to Selom in the land of Chanaan.
13 Alors toute l’assemblée envoya un message aux Benjamites réfugiés à la Roche de Rimmon et leur offrit la paix.
And all the congregation sent and spoke to the children of Benjamin in the rock Remmon, and invited them to [make] peace.
14 Les Benjamites revinrent aussitôt, et on leur donna les femmes qu’on avait épargnées parmi celles de Jabès-Galaad; mais il ne s’en trouva pas autant qu’il fallait.
And Benjamin returned to the children of Israel at that time, and the children of Israel gave them the women whom they [had] save alive of the daughters of Jabis Galaad; and they were content.
15 Or, le peuple était ému au sujet de Benjamin, en songeant à la brèche que le Seigneur avait faite parmi les tribus d’Israël.
And the people relented for Benjamin, because the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
16 Les anciens de la communauté dirent: "Comment pourvoirons-nous de femmes ceux qui restent encore, toute femme en Benjamin ayant été exterminée?"
And the elders of the congregation said, What shall we do for wives for them that remain? for the women have been destroyed out of Benjamin.
17 Ils ajoutaient: "Ceux qui ont échappé auront l’héritage de Benjamin; il ne faut pas qu’une tribu disparaisse en Israël!
And they said, [There must be] an inheritance of them that are escaped of Benjamin; and [so] a tribe shall not be destroyed out of Israel.
18 Pour nous, nous ne pouvons leur donner nos filles pour femmes, puisque les enfants d’Israël ont prononcé ce serment: "Maudit qui donnerait une femme à Benjamin!"
For we shall not be able to give them wives of our daughters, because we swore among the children of Israel, saying, Cursed [is] he that gives a wife to Benjamin.
19 Mais il y a, dirent-ils, une fête religieuse célébrée chaque année à Silo, sur la place qui est au nord de Béthel, à l’orient de la route qui monte de Béthel à Sichem, et au midi de Lebona."
And they said, Lo! now [there is] a feast of the Lord from year to year in Selom, which is on the north of Baethel, eastward on the way that goes up from Baethel to Sychem, and from the south of Lebona.
20 Ils donnèrent donc ce conseil aux Benjamites: Allez vous embusquer dans les vignes;
And they charged the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;
21 et lorsque vous verrez les filles de Silo sortir pour danser en chœur, vous sortirez vous-mêmes des vignes, vous enlèverez chacun une femme parmi les filles de Silo, et vous vous en irez au pays de Benjamin.
and ye shall see; and lo! if there come out the daughters of the inhabitants of Selom to dance in dances, then shall ye go out of the vineyards and seize for yourselves every man a wife of the daughters of Selom, and go ye into the land of Benjamin.
22 Que si leurs pères ou leurs frères viennent se plaindre à nous, nous leur dirons: Faites-leur grâce en notre faveur, puisque nous n’avons pu prendre une femme pour chacun lors de l’expédition; d’ailleurs, ce n’est pas vous qui les leur avez données, pour vous croire à cette heure en faute."
And it shall come to pass, when their fathers or their brethren come to dispute with us, that we will say to them, Grant them freely to us, for we have not taken every man his wife in the battle: because ye did not give to them according to the occasion, ye transgressed.
23 Ainsi firent les enfants de Benjamin: ils enlevèrent, parmi les danseuses, un nombre de femmes égal au leur et les prirent pour épouses; puis ils s’en retournèrent dans leur territoire héréditaire, rebâtirent les villes et s’y établirent.
And the children of Benjamin did so; and they took wives according to their number from the dancers whom they seized: and they went and returned to their inheritance, and built the cities, and dwelt in them.
24 Les enfants d’Israël s’en allèrent alors, chacun selon sa tribu et sa famille, et chacun s’achemina de là à son héritage.
And the children of Israel went thence at that time every man to his tribe and his kindred; and they went thence every man to his inheritance.
25 En ce temps-là il n’y avait point de roi en Israël, et chacun faisait ce que bon lui semblait.
And in those days there was no king in Israel; every man did that which was right in his own sight.
