Juges 2
1 Un envoyé du Seigneur s’en vint de Ghilgal à Bokhîm et dit de sa part: "Je vous avais fait monter d’Egypte et entrer dans le pays que j’avais promis par serment à vos pères, et j’avais dit: "Je ne romprai jamais mon alliance avec vous;
And a messenger of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, And he said, I caused you to go up out of Egypt, and I brought you unto the land which I had sworn unto your fathers; and I said, I will not break my covenant with you for ever.
2 mais à votre tour ne transigez point avec les habitants de ce pays, détruisez leurs autels!" Et vous n’avez pas écouté ma voix. Qu’avez-vous fait là!
But ye for your part shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; their altars shall ye throw down; but ye have not obeyed my voice: what is this ye have done?
3 Aussi ai-je résolu de ne pas les chasser de devant vous; et ils s’attacheront à vos flancs, et leurs divinités seront pour vous un écueil."
And I also have said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be evil neighbors to you, and their gods shall become a snare unto you.
4 Quand l’envoyé du Seigneur eut ainsi parlé à tous les enfants d’Israël, le peuple éclata en pleurs;
And it came to pass, when the messenger of the Lord spoke these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
5 on nomma cet endroit Bokhîm, et l’on y sacrifia à l’Eternel.
And they called the name of that place, Bochim; and they sacrificed there unto the Lord.
6 Or, lorsque Josué eut congédié le peuple et que les enfants d’Israël, prenant possession du pays, s’installèrent chacun dans son héritage,
And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to take possession of the land.
7 le peuple servit l’Eternel pendant toute la vie de Josué, et tout le temps que vécurent, après lui, les vieillards témoins de toutes les grandes œuvres que Dieu avait accomplies pour Israël.
And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that lived many days after Joshua, who had seen all the great deeds of the Lord, which he had done for Israel.
8 Josué, fils de Noun, serviteur de l’Eternel, mourut à l’âge de cent dix ans.
Then died Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, being one hundred and ten years old.
9 On l’ensevelit dans le territoire de sa possession, à Timnat-Hérès, dans la montagne d’Ephraïm, au nord du mont Gaach.
And they buried him on the border of his inheritance in Timnath-cheres, in the mountain of Ephraim, on the north side of mount Ga'ash.
10 Quand toute cette génération, à son tour, fut réunie à ses pères, une autre génération lui succéda, qui ne connaissait point l’Eternel, ni ce qu’il avait fait pour Israël.
And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers; and there arose another generation after them, who knew not the Lord, and likewise not the deeds which he had done for Israel.
11 Les enfants d’Israël firent ce qui déplaît à l’Eternel, ils adorèrent les Bealim.
And the children of Israel did the evil in the eyes of the Lord, and served the Be'alim:
12 Abandonnant l’Eternel, Dieu de leurs pères, qui les avait tirés du pays d’Egypte, ils s’attachèrent à d’autres dieux, choisis parmi ceux des peuples d’alentour, se prosternèrent devant eux et irritèrent l’Eternel.
And they forsook the Lord the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they went after other gods, of the gods of the nations that were round about them, and they bowed themselves unto them, and incensed the Lord.
13 Ils abandonnèrent ainsi l’Eternel, pour servir Baal et les Astarot.
And they forsook the Lord, and served Baal and 'Ashtaroth.
14 Alors la colère de l’Eternel s’alluma contre Israël, il les abandonna aux déprédations de peuples pillards, les livra aux ennemis qui les entouraient, et ils ne furent plus capables de leur tenir tête.
And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand of spoilers who spoiled them, and he sold them into the hand of their enemies round about, and they were not able any longer to stand before their enemies.
15 Dans toutes leurs expéditions, la main de l’Eternel intervenait à leur désavantage, comme il l’avait annoncé, comme il le leur avait juré; ils furent ainsi réduits à la plus grande détresse.
Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had spoken, and as the Lord had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.
16 Alors Dieu suscita des juges, qui les délivrèrent de la main de leurs déprédateurs.
And the Lord raised up judges, and they delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.
17 Mais ils n’obéirent pas non plus à leurs juges: loin de là, ils se prostituèrent à des dieux étrangers et se prosternèrent devant eux; promptement infidèles à la voie qu’avaient suivie leurs pères, ils n’écoutèrent pas, comme eux, les commandements du Seigneur.
But also unto their judges they did not hearken; but they went astray after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers had walked in, to obey the commandments of the Lord; they did not so.
18 Quand l’Eternel leur suscitait des juges, il assistait ceux-ci et délivrait les Israélites du pouvoir de leurs ennemis tant que vivait le juge; car l’Eternel se laissait fléchir par leurs gémissements que provoquaient leurs oppresseurs et leurs tyrans.
And when the Lord raised them up judges, then was the Lord with the judge, and he delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord bethought himself because of their groaning by reason of those that oppressed them and ill-treated them.
19 Puis, le juge mort, ils recommençaient à agir plus mal encore que leur ancêtres en s’attachant à des dieux étrangers, en les servant et en se prosternant devant eux, en ne renonçant enfin ni à leurs méfaits, ni à leur conduite déréglée.
And it came to pass, when the judge died, that they returned, and became more corrupt than their fathers, in going after other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them: they omitted nothing from their doings, and from their stubborn way.
20 Aussi l’Eternel s’irrita contre Israël et dit: "Puisque cette nation a transgressé le pacte que j’avais imposé à ses pères, puisqu’ils n’ont pas écouté ma voix,
And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel; and he said, For the cause that this people have transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice:
21 à mon tour, je ne veux plus déposséder, en leur faveur, aucun des peuples que Josué a laissé subsister lorsqu’il est mort.
So will I also for my part not drive out henceforth any man from before them out of the nations which Joshua left when he died;
22 Ils me serviront à éprouver les Israélites, à juger s’ils s’appliquent ou non à suivre les voies de l’Eternel comme l’on fait leurs ancêtres."
In order to prove through them the Israelites, whether they will keep the way of the Lord, to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.
23 L’Eternel s’abstint donc de hâter la dépossession de ces peuples, de même qu’il ne les avait point livrés au pouvoir de Josué.
And thus did the Lord leave these nations, so as not to drive them out speedily; and he delivered them not into the hand of Joshua.
