Juges 11
1 Il y avait alors un vaillant guerrier, Jephté le Galaadite; c’était le fils d’une femme prostituée, et Ghilad était son père.
And Jephthah the Gileadite has been a mighty man of valor, and he [is the] son of a harlot woman; and Gilead begets Jephthah,
2 Mais la femme de Ghilad lui donna aussi des fils. Ceux-ci, devenus grands, expulsèrent Jephté en lui disant: "Tu n’as pas droit à l’héritage de notre père, car tu es le fils d’une femme étrangère."
and the wife of Gilead bears sons to him, and the wife’s sons grow up and cast Jephthah out, and say to him, “You do not inherit in the house of our father; for you [are the] son of another woman.”
3 Jephté dut s’éloigner de ses frères et alla s’établir au pays de Tob. Là il devint le centre d’un ramas d’aventuriers, qui firent avec lui des incursions.
And Jephthah flees from the face of his brothers, and dwells in the land of Tob; and vain men gather themselves together to Jephthah, and they go out with him.
4 Ce fut quelque temps après, qu’eut lieu la guerre des Ammonites contre Israël.
And it comes to pass, after a time, that the sons of Ammon fight with Israel,
5 Les Ammonites ayant attaqué Israël, les anciens de Galaad allèrent chercher Jephté au pays de Tob.
and it comes to pass, when the sons of Ammon have fought with Israel, that [the] elderly of Gilead go to take Jephthah from the land of Tob;
6 Ils dirent à Jephté: "Viens, sois notre chef, que nous puissions combattre les enfants d’Ammon."
and they say to Jephthah, “Come, and you have been for a captain to us, and we fight against the sons of Ammon.”
7 Jephté répondit aux anciens de Galaad: "Est-ce que vous n’êtes pas mes ennemis, qui m’avez chassé de la maison de mon père? Pourquoi donc venez-vous à moi, maintenant que vous êtes dans la détresse?"
And Jephthah says to [the] elderly of Gilead, “Have you not hated me? And you cast me out from the house of my father, and why have you come to me now when you are in distress?”
8 "Oui vraiment, dirent les anciens de Galaad à Jephté, maintenant nous revenons à toi, afin que tu marches avec nous, que tu combattes les enfants d’Ammon, et que tu deviennes notre chef à tous, habitants du Galaad."
And [the] elderly of Gilead say to Jephthah, “Therefore, now, we have turned back to you; and you have gone with us, and have fought against the sons of Ammon, and you have been for head to us—to all the inhabitants of Gilead.”
9 Alors Jephté dit aux anciens de Galaad: "Si vous me déterminez à revenir pour guerroyer avec les Ammonites et que l’Eternel me les livre, je veux rester votre chef."
And Jephthah says to [the] elderly of Gilead, “If you are taking me back to fight against the sons of Ammon, and YHWH has given them before me—am I for a head to you?”
10 Et les anciens de Galaad lui répondirent: "Par l’Eternel qui nous entend les uns et les autres, nous jurons de faire comme tu l’as dit!"
And [the] elderly of Gilead say to Jephthah, “YHWH is listening between us—if we do not do so according to your word.”
11 Jephté partit alors avec les anciens de Galaad, et le peuple le nomma son chef et son capitaine, et Jephté répéta toutes ses paroles devant l’Eternel, à Miçpa.
And Jephthah goes with [the] elderly of Gilead, and the people set him over them for head and for captain, and Jephthah speaks all his words before YHWH in Mizpeh.
12 Puis Jephté envoya une députation au roi des Ammonites, pour lui dire: "Qu’ai-je à démêler avec toi, que tu sois venu porter la guerre dans mon pays?"
And Jephthah sends messengers to the king of the sons of Ammon, saying, “What [is this] to me and to you, that you have come to me, to fight in my land?”
13 Le roi des Ammonites répondit aux envoyés de Jephté: "C’Est qu’Israël, étant sorti d’Egypte, s’empara de mon pays, depuis l’Arnon jusqu’au Jaboc et jusqu’au Jourdain. Et maintenant, rends-le moi à l’amiable."
And the king of the sons of Ammon says to the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel took my land in his coming up out of Egypt, from Arnon, and to the Jabbok, and to the Jordan; and now, restore them in peace.”
14 Jephté envoya une nouvelle députation au roi des Ammonites,
And Jephthah adds yet and sends messengers to the king of the sons of Ammon,
15 et lui fit dire: "Ainsi parla Jephté: Israël ne s’est emparé ni du territoire de Moab, ni de celui des enfants d’Ammon.
and says to him, “Thus said Jephthah: Israel did not take the land of Moab, and the land of the sons of Ammon,
16 En effet, après être sorti d’Egypte, Israël s’avança dans le désert jusqu’à la mer des Joncs, puis il arriva à Kadêch.
for in their coming up out of Egypt, Israel goes in the wilderness to the Red Sea, and comes to Kadesh,
17 Et Israël envoya des émissaires au roi d’Edom pour lui dire: "Je voudrais passer par ton pays." Mais le roi d’Edom n’y consentit point. On envoya pareil message au roi de Moab, qui refusa également, et Israël resta à Kadêch.
and Israel sends messengers to the king of Edom, saying, Please let me pass over through your land, and the king of Edom did not listen; and [Israel] has also sent to the king of Moab, and he has not been willing; and Israel abides in Kadesh,
18 Alors, prenant par le désert, il tourna les pays d’Edom et de Moab, arriva jusqu’au pays de Moab du côté de l’Orient, et ils campèrent au bord de l’Arnon; mais ils ne franchirent point la limite de Moab, car c’est l’Arnon qui forme cette limite.
and he goes through the wilderness, and goes around the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and comes in at the rising of the sun of the land of Moab, and they encamp beyond Arnon, and have not come into the border of Moab, for Arnon [is] the border of Moab.
19 Et Israël envoya des députés à Sihôn, roi des Amorréens, qui régnait à Hesbon, et il lui fit dire: "Laisse-nous traverser ton pays pour gagner notre destination."
And Israel sends messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and Israel says to him, Please let us pass over through your land, to my place,
20 Mais Sihôn n’eut pas assez de confiance en Israël pour le laisser franchir sa frontière: il rassembla donc tout son peuple, ils prirent position à Yahça et attaquèrent Israël.
and Sihon has not trusted Israel to pass over through his border, and Sihon gathers all his people, and they encamp in Jahaz, and fight with Israel;
21 L’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, livra Sihôn et toute son armée au pouvoir d’Israël, qui les défit et qui prit possession de tout le pays des Amorréens, habitants de cette contrée.
and YHWH, God of Israel, gives Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they strike them, and Israel possesses all the land of the Amorite, the inhabitant of that land,
22 Ils possédèrent ainsi tout le territoire amorréen, depuis l’Arnon jusqu’au Jaboc, et depuis le désert jusqu’au Jourdain.
and they possess all the border of the Amorite from Arnon, and to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness, and to the Jordan.
23 Ainsi l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, a évincé l’Amorréen pour son peuple Israël, et tu voudrais déposséder celui-ci!
And now, YHWH, God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorite from the presence of His people Israel, and you would possess it!
24 N’Est-ce pas, ce que ton Dieu Camos te fait conquérir devient ta possession? Eh bien! tout ce que l’Eternel, notre Dieu, nous a fait conquérir, restera la nôtre.
That which your god Chemosh causes you to possess—do you not possess it? And all that which our God YHWH has dispossessed from our presence—we possess it.
25 Au surplus, es-tu mieux fondé en droit que Balak, fils de Cippor, le roi de Moab? Osa-t-il contester avec Israël? osa-t-il lui faire la guerre?
And now, [are] you at all better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he strive with Israel at all? Did he fight against them at all?
26 Israël est établi, depuis trois cents ans, dans Hesbon et sa banlieue, dans Aror et sa banlieue, dans toutes les villes qui bordent l’Arnon: pourquoi donc, durant toute cette période, ne les avez-vous point reprises?
In Israel’s dwelling in Heshbon and in its towns, and in Aroer and in its towns, and in all the cities which [are] by the sides of Arnon [for] three hundred years—and why have you not delivered them in that time?
27 Pour moi, je ne t’ai point lésé, et tu agis mal à mon égard en me faisant la guerre. Que l’Eternel, le vrai Juge, prononce maintenant entre les enfants d’Israël et les enfants d’Ammon!"
And I have not sinned against you, and you are doing evil with me—to fight against me. YHWH, the Judge, judges between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon today.”
28 Mais le roi des Ammonites ne tint pas compte des paroles que Jephté lui avait fait adresser.
And the king of the sons of Ammon has not listened to the words of Jephthah which he sent to him,
29 Alors, animé de l’esprit de l’Eternel, Jephté traversa le Galaad et Manassé, atteignit Miçpé-Ghilad, et de là s’avança jusqu’aux Ammonites.
and the Spirit of YHWH is on Jephthah, and he passes over Gilead and Manasseh, and passes over Mizpeh of Gilead, and he has passed over from Mizpeh of Gilead to the sons of Ammon.
30 Et Jephté fit un vœu à l’Eternel en disant: "Si tu livres en mon pouvoir les enfants d’Ammon,
And Jephthah vows a vow to YHWH and says, “If You give the sons of Ammon into my hand at all—
31 la première créature qui sortira de ma maison au-devant de moi, quand je reviendrai vainqueur des enfants d’Ammon, sera vouée à l’Eternel, et je l’offrirai en holocauste."
then it has been, that which comes out from the doors of my house at all to meet me in my turning back in peace from the sons of Ammon—it has been for YHWH, or I have offered up a burnt-offering for it.”
32 Jephté marcha alors sur les Ammonites pour les combattre, et l’Eternel les livra en sa main.
And Jephthah passes over to the sons of Ammon to fight against them, and YHWH gives them into his hand,
33 Il les battit depuis Aroêr jusque vers Minnit (vingt villes), et jusqu’à Abel-Keramim; défaite considérable, qui abaissa les Ammonites devant les enfants d’Israël.
and he strikes them from Aroer, and to [where] you are going in to Minnith—twenty cities—and to the meadow of the vineyards, [with] a very great striking; and the sons of Ammon are humbled at the presence of the sons of Israel.
34 Comme Jephté rentrait dans sa maison à Miçpa, voici venir sa fille à sa rencontre, avec des tambourins et des chœurs de danse. C’Était son unique enfant; hors d’elle il n’avait ni fils ni fille.
And Jephthah comes into Mizpeh, to his house, and behold, his daughter is coming out to meet him with timbrels, and with choruses, and except her alone, he has no son or daughter.
35 Quand il la vit, il déchira ses vêtements et s’écria: "Hélas! ma fille, tu m’accables! c’est toi qui fais mon malheur! Mais je me suis engagé devant l’Eternel, je ne puis m’en dédire."
And it comes to pass, when he sees her, that he tears his garments and says, “Aah! My daughter, you have caused me to bend greatly, and you have been among those troubling me; and I have opened my mouth to YHWH, and I am not able to turn back.”
36 Elle lui répondit: "Mort père, tu t’es engagé devant Dieu, fais-moi ce qu’a promis ta bouche, maintenant que l’Eternel t’a vengé de tes ennemis, les Ammonites.
And she says to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to YHWH, do to me as it has gone out from your mouth, after that YHWH has done vengeance for you on your enemies, on the sons of Ammon.”
37 Seulement, ajouta-t-elle, qu’on m’accorde cette faveur, de me laisser deux mois de répit, afin que j’aille, retirée sur les montagnes, pleurer avec mes amies sur ma virginité."
And she says to her father, “Let this thing be done to me; desist from me [for] two months, and I go on, and have gone down on the hills, and I weep for my virginity—I and my friends.”
38 "Va", dit-il. Et il la laissa libre pour deux mois; et elle s’en alla avec ses compagnes sur les monts, où elle pleura sa virginité.
And he says, “Go”; and he sends her away [for] two months, and she goes, she and her friends, and she weeps for her virginity on the hills;
39 Au bout de deux mois, elle revint chez son père, qui accomplit à son égard le vœu qu’il avait prononcé. Elle n’avait jamais connu d’homme. Et cela devint une coutume en Israël:
and it comes to pass at the end of two months that she turns back to her father, and he does to her his vow which he has vowed, and she did not know a man; and it is a statute in Israel:
40 d’année en année, quatre jours de suite, les filles israélites se réunissaient pour pleurer la mémoire de la fille de Jephté le Galaadite.
from time to time the daughters of Israel go to talk to the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite, four days in a year.
