Juges 1

1 Après la mort de Josué, les enfants d’Israël consultèrent le Seigneur en disant: "Qui de nous doit marcher le premier contre le Cananéen pour l’attaquer?"

After that Ioshua was dead, the children of Israel asked ye Lord, saying, Who shall goe vp for vs against the Canaanites, to fight first against them?

2 Le Seigneur répondit: "C’Est Juda qui doit marcher; je livre le pays en son pouvoir."

And the Lord said, Iudah shall goe vp: behold, I haue giuen the land into his hande.

3 Alors Juda dit à Siméon, son frère: "Aide-moi à faire la guerre au Cananéen dans mon territoire et à mon tour je ferai campagne avec toi dans le tien." Et Siméon se joignit à lui.

And Iudah said vnto Simeon his brother, Come vp with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites: and I likewise will goe with thee into thy lot: so Simeon went with him.

4 Juda se mit en marche, et le Seigneur livra le Cananéen et le Phérézéen en son pouvoir; ils les défirent à Bézek, au nombre de dix mille hommes.

Then Iudah went vp, and the Lord deliuered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hands, and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

5 Ils trouvèrent Adoni-Bézek à Bézek, l’attaquèrent, et achevèrent de battre le Cananéen et le Phérézéen.

And they founde Adoni-bezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and slewe the Canaanites, and the Perizzites.

6 Adoni-Bézek ayant pris la fuite, ils le poursuivirent, le prirent et lui coupèrent les pouces et les orteils.

But Adoni-bezek fled, and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off the thumbes of his hands and of his feete.

7 Et Adoni-Bézek dit: "Soixante-dix rois, ayant les pouces et les orteils coupés, ont ramassé les miettes sous ma table; ce que j’ai fait, Dieu me le rend!" On le conduisit à Jérusalem, et il y mourut.

And Adoni-bezek said, Seuentie Kings hauing the thumbes of their hands and of their feete cut off, gathered bread vnder my table: as I haue done, so God hath rewarded me. so they brought him to Ierusalem, and there he died.

8 Les enfants de Juda attaquèrent Jérusalem, s’en emparèrent, passèrent la population au fil de l’épée, et livrèrent la ville aux flammes.

(Nowe the children of Iudah had fought against Ierusalem, and had taken it and smitten it with the edge of the sworde, and had set the citie on fire.)

9 Après quoi, les enfants de Juda descendirent attaquer les Cananéens qui habitaient la montagne, ceux du Midi et de la plaine.

Afterwarde also the children of Iudah went downe to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountaine, and towarde the South, and in the lowe countrey.

10 Puis Juda marcha contre les Cananéens qui habitaient Hébron Hébron portait autrefois le nom de Cité d’Arba et ils battirent Chêchaï, Ahimân et Talmaï.

And Iudah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron, which Hebron beforetime was called Kiriath-arba: and they slewe Sheshai, and Ahiman and Talmai.

11 De là on se dirigea vers les habitants de Debir, laquelle s’appelait autrefois Kiryat-Sêfer.

And from thence hee went to the inhabitantes of Debir, and the name of Debir in olde time was Kiriath-sepher.

12 Et Caleb dit: "Celui qui triomphera de Kiryat-Sêfer et la prendra, je lui donnerai ma fille Akhsa pour épouse."

And Caleb saide, He that smiteth Kiriath-sepher, and taketh it, euen to him wil I giue Achsah my daughter to wife.

13 Elle fut prise par Othoniel, fils de Kenaz, frère puîné de Caleb, et celui-ci lui donna pour femme sa fille Akhsa.

And Othniel the sonne of Kenaz Calebs yonger brother tooke it, to whome hee gaue Achsah his daughter to wife.

14 En se rendant près de son époux, elle l’incita à demander le domaine à son père; puis elle-même descendit de l’âne, et Caleb lui ayant demandé: "Que veux-tu?"

And when shee came to him, shee mooued him to aske of her father a field, and shee lighted off her asse, and Caleb saide vnto her, What wilt thou?

15 Elle lui répondit: "Fais-moi un présent, car tu m’as reléguée dans un pays aride; donne-moi donc des sources d’eau! Et Caleb lui donna les sources du pays haut et celles du pays bas.

And shee answered him, Giue mee a blessing: for thou hast giuen me a South countrey, giue me also springs of water: and Caleb gaue her the springs aboue and the springs beneath.

16 Les descendants de Kéni, beau-père de Moïse, montèrent avec ceux de Juda de la ville des Palmiers au désert de Juda, qui est au midi d’Arad; et ils s’y établirent parmi le peuple.

And the childre of Keni Moses father in law went vp out of the citie of the palme trees with the children of Iudah, into the wildernesse of Iudah, that lieth in the South of Arad, and went and dwelt among the people.

17 Juda se mit encore en campagne avec Siméon, son frère, et ils battirent le Cananéen habitant Cefat; ils vouèrent la ville à l’anathème, et elle reçut le nom de Horma.

But Iudah went with Simeon his brother, and they slewe the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and vtterly destroied it, and called the name of the citie Hormah.

18 Puis Juda prit Gaza avec son territoire, Ascalon avec le sien, Ekron avec le sien.

Also Iudah tooke Azzah with the coasts thereof, and Askelon with the coasts thereof, and Ekron with the coastes thereof.

19 Le Seigneur fut avec Juda, de sorte qu’il put conquérir la montagne; mais il ne put déposséder les habitants de la vallée, qui avaient des chariots armés de fer.

And the Lord was with Iudah, and he possessed the mountaines: for he could not driue out the inhabitantes of the valleis, because they had charrets of yron.

20 Caleb eut pour apanage Hébron, comme l’avait dit Moïse, et il en expulsa les trois fils d’Anak.

And they gaue Hebron vnto Caleb, as Moses had saide, and hee expelled thence the three sonnes of Anak.

21 Pour les Jébuséens, habitants de Jérusalem, les enfants de Benjamin ne les dépossédèrent point, et ils sont restés à Jérusalem, avec les enfants de Benjamin, jusqu’à ce jour.

But the children of Beniamin did not cast out the Iebusites, that inhabited Ierusalem: therefore the Iebusites dwell with the children of Beniamin in Ierusalem vnto this day.

22 De leur côté, les descendants de Joseph marchèrent sur Béthel, et le Seigneur fut avec eux.

They also that were of the house of Ioseph, went vp to Beth-el, and the Lord was with them,

23 Ils firent explorer les abords de Béthel, ville qui autrefois avait nom Louz.

And the house of Ioseph caused to viewe Beth-el (and the name of the citie beforetime was Luz)

24 Or, les soldats de garde, voyant un homme qui sortait de la ville, lui dirent: "Montre-nous par où l’on peut entrer dans la ville, et nous te traiterons avec faveur."

And the spies sawe a man come out of the citie, and they saide vnto him, Shewe vs, we praie thee, the way into the citie, and we will shewe thee mercie.

25 Il leur indiqua le moyen de pénétrer dans la ville, et ils passèrent les habitants au fil de l’épée, mais laissèrent partir l’homme avec toute sa famille.

And when hee had shewed them the waie into the citie, they smote the citie with the edge of the sworde, but they let the man and all his housholde depart.

26 Celui-ci se retira au pays des Héthéens; il bâtit une ville qu’il nomma Louz, et ce nom lui est resté jusqu’aujourd’hui.

Then the man went into the lande of the Hittites, and built a citie, and called the name thereof Luz, which is the name thereof vnto this daie.

27 Pour Manassé, il ne déposséda point les gens de Beth-Cheân et de ses dépendances, ceux de Taanakh et de ses dépendances, ni les habitants de Dor et de ses dépendances, ni ceux de Yibleâm avec les siennes, ni ceux de Meghiddo avec les siennes, le Cananéen persistant à demeurer dans ce pays.

Neither did Manasseh destroie Bethshean with her townes, nor Taanach with her townes, nor the inhabitantes of Dor with her townes, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam with her townes, neither the inhabitants of Megiddo with her townes: but the Canaanites dwelled still in that lande.

28 Devenu plus puissant, Israël soumit le Cananéen à un tribut, mais il ne l’expulsa point.

Neuerthelesse when Israel was strong, they put the Canaanites to tribute, and expelled them not wholly.

29 Ephraïm non plus n’expulsa le Cananéen établi à Ghézer, de sorte que le Cananéen demeura côte à côte avec lui à Ghézer.

Likewise Ephraim expelled not the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer, but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

30 Zabulon n’expulsa point les habitants de Kitrôn ni ceux de Nahalol; ces Cananéens demeurèrent avec lui, mais payèrent tribut.

Neither did Zebulun expell the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol, but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.

31 Aser n’expulsa point les habitants d’Acco ni ceux de Sidon, d’Ahlab, d’Akhzib, de Helba, d’Afik et de Rehob.

Neither did Asher cast out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob,

32 Les Asérites demeurèrent donc au milieu des Cananéens qui occupaient ce pays, ne les ayant point dépossédés.

But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites the inhabitantes of the lande: for they did not driue them out.

33 Nephtali n’expulsa pas les habitants de Beth-Chémech, ni ceux de Beth-Anat, et il demeura au milieu des Cananéens qui habitaient ce pays; mais les habitants de Beth-Chémech et de Beth-Anat leur payèrent tribut.

Neither did Naphtali driue out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath, but dwelt among the Canaanites the inhabitants of the lande: neuerthelesse the inhabitantes of Beth-shemesh, and of Beth-anath became tributaries vnto them.

34 Les Amorréens refoulèrent les enfants de Dan sur la montagne, en ne les laissant pas descendre dans la vallée.

And the Amorites droue the children of Dan into the mountaine: so that they suffered them not to come downe to the valley.

35 Ces Amorréens voulurent rester à Har-Hérès, à Ayyalôn et à Chaalbîm; mais, dominés par la puissance supérieure de la maison de Joseph, ils devinrent tributaires.

And the Ammonites dwelt still in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, and when the hand of Iosephs familie preuailed, they became tributaries:

36 Le territoire des Amorréens commençait à la montée d’Akrabbîm, à partir de Séla et au-dessus.

And the coast of the Amorites was from Maaleh-akrabbim, euen from Selah and vpward.
