Josué 9
1 Quand ces faits vinrent à la connaissance des rois qui habitaient la rive du Jourdain, la montagne, la vallée et toute la côte de la grande mer jusqu’au Liban, Héthéens et Amorréens, Cananéens, Phérézéens, Hévéens et Jébuséens,
All the kings west of the Jordan heard what had happened. These included the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites who lived in the hill country, the lowlands, and along the coast as far as Lebanon.
2 ils réunirent leurs forces, d’un commun accord, pour faire la guerre à Josué et à Israël.
So they gathered to fight together as a united army against Joshua and the Israelites.
3 Mais les habitants de Gabaon, en apprenant comment Josué avait traité Jéricho et Aï,
But when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,
4 eurent recours, de leur côté, à un stratagème. Ils se mirent en route, munis de provisions, chargèrent leurs ânes de vieux sacs, d’outres à vin usées, crevées et recousues;
they decided on a cunning plan. They sent messengers to Joshua, their donkeys wearing worn-out saddles and carrying old wineskins that were torn and patched.
5 se chaussèrent de vieux souliers rapiécés, endossèrent des vêtements hors d’usage, et n’emportèrent comme provision que du pain dur et tout moisi.
They put on worn sandals that had been mended and wore old clothes. All their bread was dry and moldy.
6 lls s’en allèrent ainsi trouver Josué, au campement de Ghilgal, et lui dirent, à lui et aux Israélites: "Nous venons d’un pays lointain, et vous prions de conclure une alliance avec nous."
They went to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal and told him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a land far away, so please make a treaty with us.”
7 Les Israélites répondirent à ces Hévéens: "Peut-être habitez-vous dans notre voisinage: comment pourrions-nous faire alliance avec vous?"
But the Israelites said to the Hivites, “Maybe you live close by. If you do, we cannot make a treaty with you.”
8 Ils dirent alors à Josué: "Nous sommes tes serviteurs." Et Josué leur demanda: "Qui êtes-vous? D’Où venez-vous?"
“We are your servants,” they replied. “But who are you? Where do you come from?” Joshua asked.
9 Ils lui répondirent: "Tes serviteurs sont venus d’un pays très éloigné, en l’honneur de l’Eternel ton Dieu. Car nous avons entendu parler de lui et de tout ce qu’il a fait en Egypte,
“Your servants have come from a land far away,” they replied. “For we have heard of the reputation of the Lord your God, and reports of all that he did in Egypt,
10 et de ce qu’il a fait aux deux rois amorréens qui demeuraient au-delà du Jourdain, à Sihôn, roi de Hesbon, et à Og, roi du Basan, qui résidait à Astaroth;
and what he did to the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan—to Sihon, king of Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan, who ruled in Ashtaroth.
11 et alors nos anciens et tous les gens de notre pays nous ont dit: "Emportez des provisions de voyage, allez les trouver et dites-leur: "Nous sommes vos serviteurs, faites un pacte avec nous."
So our leaders and everyone who lives in our land told us: Take what you need with you for the journey. Go and meet with them, and tell them, ‘We are your servants. Please make a treaty with us.’
12 Voyez notre pain: nous l’avions emporté frais de nos demeures, quand nous sommes partis pour aller chez vous; et maintenant le voilà tout rassis, piqué de moisissure.
Look at this bread. It was warm when we took it from our houses on the day we set out to come here. But now it's dry and moldy, as you can see.
13 Voyez ces outres à vin, que nous avions remplies neuves, maintenant toutes déchirées; et ces vêtements et ces chaussures, usés par l’extrême longueur du voyage!"
These wineskins were new when we filled them, but look at them now—they're split and damaged. These clothes of ours and our sandals are all worn out because the journey took so long.”
14 On accepta de leurs provisions, sans avoir consulté le Seigneur.
The Israelites tried some of the food. However, they did not consult the Lord.
15 Josué leur accorda la paix, leur garantit par un traité la, vie sauve, et les phylarques de la communauté leur en firent le serment.
Then Joshua made a treaty with them, promising to spare their lives, and the leaders of the assembly swore an oath to guarantee it.
16 Or, trois jours après la conclusion de ce traité, on apprit que c’était un peuple voisin, et qu’il demeurait dans la région même.
Three days after they had made the treaty, the Israelites learned that the Gibeonites lived nearby, right among them!
17 Car les Israélites, ayant levé le camp, arrivèrent dans leurs villes dès le troisième jour. (Ces villes étaient: Gabaon, Kefira, Beérôth et Kiryath-Yearim. )
The Israelites left to go to the Gibeonite towns, and arrived there on the third day. The towns were Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim.
18 Toutefois, les Israélites ne sévirent pas contre eux, parce que les phylarques leur avaient fait serment par l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël; mais toute la communauté murmura contre les phylarques.
But the Israelites did not attack them because of the treaty sworn by the leaders of the assembly in the name of the Lord, the God of Israel. At this all the Israelites protested against the leaders.
19 Ceux-ci dirent à la communauté réunie: "Nous leur avons juré par l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël; dès lors, nous ne pouvons toucher à leurs personnes.
But the leaders replied to the people, “We swore to them by the Lord, the God of Israel, so we cannot lay a hand on them now.
20 Voici ce que nous leur ferons. Il faut les laisser vivre, si nous ne voulons provoquer la colère divine, à cause du serment que nous leur avons fait."
So this is what we're going to do to them. We'll let them live, so that we won't be punished for breaking the oath that we swore to them.”
21 Alors les phylarques leur dirent à quelle condition ils garderaient la vie: ils restèrent, comme fendeurs de bois et porteurs d’eau, au service de la communauté, selon ce que les phylarques leur enjoignirent.
The leaders concluded, “Let them live.” So the Gibeonites became woodcutters and water-carriers in service to the entire assembly, as the Israelite leaders had ordered.
22 Josué les manda et leur parla ainsi: "Pourquoi nous avez-vous trompés en vous prétendant bien éloignés de nous, tandis que vous demeurez au milieu de nous?
Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and asked them, “Why did you trick us? You told us, ‘We live a long way from you,’ but you live right next door to us!
23 Eh bien donc! Vous êtes maudits, et vous ne cesserez jamais d’être attachés, comme fendeurs de bois et porteurs d’eau, à la maison de mon Dieu!"
Consequently you are under a curse. From now on you shall forever be servants, woodcutters and water-carriers for the house of my God.”
24 Ils répondirent à Josué: "C’Est que tes serviteurs avaient été informés de ce que l’Eternel, ton Dieu, a déclaré à Moïse, son serviteur, qu’il vous donnait tout ce pays et qu’il en ferait disparaître tous les habitants devant vous; alors, nous avons tremblé pour notre vie et nous avons employé cet expédient.
They answered Joshua, “We your servants were told very clearly that the Lord your God had ordered Moses to give you all this land, and that all its inhabitants were to be wiped out before you. So we really feared for our lives because of you. That's why we did what we did.
25 Maintenant nous sommes en ton pouvoir; ce qu’il te semble bon et juste de nous faire, fais-le."
Now we're in your hands. Do to us what you think is right and just.”
26 Ainsi leur fit-il, et il les sauva de la main des enfants d’Israël, qui ne les mirent pas à mort.
Joshua did as he had said. He saved them from the Israelites, so that they did not kill them.
27 De ce jour, Josué les établit comme fendeurs de bois et porteurs d’eau (ce qu’ils sont restés jusqu’à ce jour), pour la communauté et pour l’autel du Seigneur, en tout endroit que Dieu adopterait pour sa résidence.
That day Joshua made them woodcutters and water-carriers in service to the entire assembly and for the altar of the Lord wherever the Lord should choose. That is what they do right up to this very day.
