Josué 8
1 Ll’Eternel dit alors à Josué: "Sois sans crainte ni faiblesse! Prends avec toi toute la partie guerrière du peuple, et marche droit sur Aï. Vois, je livre en ton pouvoir le roi d’Aï et son peuple, et sa ville et son territoire.
And YHWH says to Joshua, “Do not fear, nor be frightened, take with you all the people of war, and rise, go up to Ai; see, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land,
2 Tu traiteras Aï et son roi comme tu as traité Jéricho et le sien; toutefois, vous pouvez capturer à votre profit les dépouilles et le bétail. Etablis une embuscade en arrière de la ville."
and you have done to Ai and to her king as you have done to Jericho and to her king; only spoil its spoil and its livestock for yourselves; for you set an ambush for the city at its rear.”
3 Josué se disposa à marcher sur Aï avec tous les gens de guerre. Il choisit d’abord trente mille hommes, soldats d’élite, qu’il fit partir la nuit,
And Joshua rises, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai, and Joshua chooses thirty thousand men, mighty men of valor, and sends them away by night,
4 en leur donnant cet ordre: "Ecoutez: vous allez vous mettre en embuscade derrière la ville, pas trop loin des murs, afin d’être à portée d’agir.
and commands them, saying, “See, you are ones lying in wait against the city, at the rear of the city, you do not go very far off from the city, and all of you have been prepared,
5 De mon côté, je m’approcherai de la ville avec tout le peuple qui est avec moi; les habitants sortiront pour nous repousser comme la première fois, et nous fuirons devant eux,
and I and all the people who [are] with me draw near to the city, and it has come to pass, when they come out to meet us as at the first, and we have fled before them,
6 afin qu’ils nous poursuivent, jusqu’à ce que nous les ayons attirés hors de la ville; car ils se diront: "Ils fuient devant nous comme la première fois"; mais, tandis que nous fuirons devant eux,
and they have come out after us until we have drawn them out of the city, for they say, They are fleeing before us as at the first, and we have fled before them,
7 vous, vous sortirez de votre embuscade et vous vous emparerez de la ville: l’Eternel, votre Dieu, la livrera en votre pouvoir.
and you rise from the ambush, and have occupied the city, and your God YHWH has given it into your hand;
8 Quand vous serez maîtres de la ville, vous y mettrez le feu, vous conformant à l’ordre de l’Eternel. Faites attention à ce que je vous prescris."
and it has been, when you capture the city, you burn the city with fire, you do according to the word of YHWH, see, I have commanded you.”
9 Là-dessus, Josué les fit partir, et ils allèrent se poster en embuscade entre Aï et Béthel, à l’occident d’Aï, tandis que Josué passa cette nuit au milieu de l’armée.
And Joshua sends them away, and they go to the ambush, and abide between Bethel and Ai, on the west of Ai; and Joshua lodges on that night in the midst of the people.
10 Le lendemain de bonne heure, il passa le peuple en revue, puis avec les anciens d’Israël, il marcha sur Aï à la tête du peuple.
And Joshua rises early in the morning, and inspects the people, and goes up, he and [the] elderly of Israel, before the people to Ai;
11 Toute l’armée qu’il conduisait s’avança ainsi et arriva en face de la ville; ils firent halte au nord d’Aï, dont ils étaient séparés par la vallée.
and all the people of war who [are] with him have gone up, and draw near and come in before the city, and encamp on the north of Ai; and the valley [is] between him and Ai.
12 Josué prit encore environ cinq mille hommes, qu’il plaça en embuscade entre Béthel et Aï, à l’ouest de cette ville.
And he takes about five thousand men, and sets them [for] an ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west of the city;
13 Quand on eut ainsi posté le peuple, le gros de l’armée au nord de la ville et sa réserve à l’ouest, Josué opéra, cette nuit même, une reconnaissance dans la vallée.
and they set the people, all the camp which [is] on the north of the city, and its rear on the west of the city, and that night Joshua goes on into the midst of the valley.
14 Quand le roi d’Aï s’en aperçut, il fit lever en toute hâte les habitants de la ville, et ils s’avancèrent vers Israël pour livrer bataille lui et tout son peuple à l’endroit désigné, en avant de la plaine, le roi ne se doutant pas qu’une embuscade le menaçait derrière la ville.
And it comes to pass, when the king of Ai sees [it], that he hurries, and rises early, and the men of the city go out to meet Israel for battle, he and all his people, at the appointed time, at the front of the plain, and he has not known that an ambush [is] against him, on the rear of the city.
15 Josué et tout Israël se laissèrent mettre par eux en déroute, et s’enfuirent dans la direction du désert.
And Joshua and all Israel [seem] struck before them, and flee the way of the wilderness,
16 Toute la population, d’Aï se rassembla pour les poursuivre, et, en poursuivant ainsi Josué, elle s’éloigna de la ville.
and all the people who [are] in the city are called to pursue after them, and they pursue after Joshua, and are drawn away out of the city,
17 II ne resta, dans Aï et dans Béthel, pas un homme qui ne fût sorti à la poursuite d’Israël; ils laissèrent la ville ouverte pour courir sus aux Israélites.
and there has not been a man left in Ai and Bethel who has not gone out after Israel, and they leave the city open, and pursue after Israel.
18 Alors l’Eternel dit à Josué: "Incline vers Aï le javelot que tu as à la main, car je la livre en ton pouvoir." Et Josué inclina du côté de la ville le javelot qu’il avait à la main.
And YHWH says to Joshua, “Stretch out with the javelin which [is] in your hand toward Ai, for I give it into your hand”; and Joshua stretches out with the javelin which [is] in his hand toward the city,
19 Aussitôt, les hommes embusqués quittèrent leur poste, s’élancèrent au signal, entrèrent dans la ville et la prirent, puis se hâtèrent d’y mettre le feu.
and the ambush has risen [with] haste, out of its place, and they run at the stretching out of his hand, and go into the city, and capture it, and hurry, and burn the city with fire.
20 Les gens d’Aï, en se retournant, virent la fumée de leur ville qui montait vers le ciel, et les bras leur tombèrent, ne pouvant fuir d’aucun côté; et le peuple qui fuyait devant eux vers le désert, fit volte-face pour arrêter leur poursuite.
And the men of Ai look behind them, and see, and behold, the smoke of the city has gone up to the heavens, and there has not been power in them to flee here and there—and the people who are fleeing to the wilderness have turned against the pursuer—
21 Josué et tout Israël avaient jugé que la ville était prise, en voyant s’élever sa fumée, et ils reprenaient l’offensive contre les troupes d’Aï.
and Joshua and all Israel have seen that the ambush has captured the city, and that the smoke of the city has gone up, and they turn back and strike the men of Ai;
22 Cependant, les autres s’élançaient contre elles, de la ville, de sorte qu’elles se trouvèrent enveloppées, devant et derrière, par les Israélites, qui les taillèrent en pièces sans en épargner un seul.
and these have come out from the city to meet them, and they are in the midst of Israel, some on this [side], and some on that [side], and they strike them until he has not left a remnant and escaped one to them;
23 Pour le roi d’Aï, on le prit vivant et on l’amena à Josué.
and they have caught the king of Ai alive, and bring him near to Joshua.
24 Quand les Israélites eurent tué tous les habitants d’Aï dans la campagne dans le désert où ils les avaient poursuivis, et que tous, jusqu’au dernier, furent tombés sous leurs armes, tout Israël revint sur Aï et passa tout au fil de l’épée.
And it comes to pass, at Israel’s finishing to slay all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness in which they pursued them (and all of them fall by the mouth of the sword until their consumption), that all of Israel turns back to Ai, and strikes it by the mouth of the sword;
25 Le nombre de ceux qui périrent en ce jour fut de douze mille, tant hommes que femmes, toute la population d’Aï.
and all who fall during the day, of men and of women, are twelve thousand—all men of Ai.
26 Josué n’avait pas cessé de tenir son javelot en arrêt, jusqu’à ce qu’on eût exterminé tous les habitants d’Aï.
And Joshua has not brought back his hand which he stretched out with the javelin until he has devoted all the inhabitants of Ai;
27 Toutefois, les Israélites capturèrent pour leur compte le bétail et le butin de cette ville, selon l’autorisation que l’Eternel avait donnée à Josué.
only the livestock and the spoil of that city has Israel spoiled for themselves, according to the word of YHWH which He commanded Joshua.
28 Josué livra Aï aux flammes et la condamna à une ruine et à une solitude perpétuelles, ce qu’elle est encore aujourd’hui.
And Joshua burns Ai, and makes it a continuous heap—a desolation to this day;
29 Et le roi d’Aï, il le fit pendre au gibet, où il resta jusqu’au soir. Au coucher du soleil, Josué donna ordre de descendre son cadavre du gibet; on le jeta aux portes de la ville et l’on posa dessus un grand amas de pierres, qui se voit encore aujourd’hui.
and he has hanged the king of Ai on the tree until evening, and at the going in of the sun Joshua has commanded, and they take down his carcass from the tree, and cast it to the opening of the gate of the city, and raise a great heap of stones over it until this day.
30 Josué bâtit alors un autel au Seigneur, Dieu d’Israël, sur le mont Hébal,
Then Joshua builds an altar to YHWH, God of Israel, in Mount Ebal,
31 selon ce que Moïse, serviteur de Dieu, avait prescrit aux enfants d’Israël, comme il est écrit dans la loi de Moïse: un autel de pierres brutes, que le fer n’avait jamais touchées. Et l’on y offrit des holocaustes à l’Eternel, et l’on y sacrifia des rémunératoires.
as Moses, servant of YHWH, commanded the sons of Israel, as it is written in the Scroll of the Law of Moses—an altar of whole stones, over which he has not waved iron—and they cause burnt-offerings to go up on it to YHWH, and sacrifice peace-offerings;
32 Là, on traça sur les pierres une copie de la Doctrine que Moïse avait écrite pour les enfants d’Israël.
and he writes there on the stones a copy of the Law of Moses, which he has written in the presence of the sons of Israel.
33 Puis, des deux côtés de l’arche d’alliance du Seigneur, en face des prêtres, enfants de Lévi qui la portaient, tout Israël, avec ses anciens, ses préposés et ses juges, tous, étrangers comme indigènes se rangèrent, moitié vers la montagne de Garizim, moitié vers celle d’Hébal, afin que, selon l’ordre de Moïse, serviteur de Dieu, ce fût d’abord la bénédiction qu’on prononçât sur le peuple israélite.
And all Israel, and its elderly, and authorities, and his judges, are standing on this [side] and on that [side] of the Ark, before the priests, the Levites, carrying the Ark of the Covenant of YHWH, the sojourner as well as the native, half of them in front of Mount Gerizim, and the half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses servant of YHWH had commanded to bless the people of Israel at the first.
34 Et ensuite, on lut toutes les paroles de la Doctrine, bénédictions et malédictions, entièrement selon la teneur du livre de la Loi.
And afterward he has proclaimed all the words of the Law, the blessing and the reviling, according to all that is written in the Scroll of the Law;
35 Il n’y eut pas un détail, de tout ce qu’avait ordonné Moïse, dont Josué ne fit lecture en présence de toute l’assemblée d’Israël, même des femmes et des enfants, ainsi que des étrangers qui vivaient parmi eux.
there has not been a thing of all that Moses commanded which Joshua has not proclaimed before all the assembly of Israel, and the women, and the infants, and the sojourner who is going in their midst.
