Josué 20

1 L’Eternel parla à Josué en ces termes:

The Lord also spake vnto Ioshua, saying,

2 "Parle aux enfants d’Israël, et dis-leur: Désignez entre vous les villes de refuge dont je vous ai parlé par l’organe de Moïse,

Speake to the children of Israel, and say, Appoint you cities of refuge, whereof I spake vnto you by the hand of Moses,

3 afin de recueillir, dans sa fuite, le meurtrier qui aurait frappé une personne par imprudence, involontairement, et de vous servir ainsi d’asile contre le vengeur du sang.

That the slaier that killeth any person by ignorance, and vnwittingly, may flee thither, and they shall be your refuge from the auenger of blood.

4 Celui qui se réfugiera dans l’une de ces villes s’arrêtera à l’entrée de la porte de la ville, exposera son cas aux anciens de cette ville, qui l’y admettront dans leur sein et lui assigneront une demeure où il habitera parmi eux.

And he that doeth flee vnto one of those cities, shall stand at the entring of the gate of the citie, and shall shewe his cause to the Elders of the citie: and they shall receiue him into the citie vnto them, and giue him a place, that hee may dwell with them.

5 Et si le vengeur du sang le poursuit, ils ne lui livreront pas le meurtrier, vu qu’il n’a point frappé son prochain avec intention ni par suite d’une haine antérieure.

And if the auenger of blood pursue after him, they shall not deliuer the slaier into his hand because hee smote his neighbour ignorantly, neither hated he him before time:

6 Il restera dans cette ville jusqu’à ce qu’il comparaisse devant l’assemblée qui doit le juger, jusqu’à la mort du grand-prêtre en fonctions à cette époque: alors seulement, le meurtrier pourra rentrer chez lui, dans sa ville, dans cette ville d’où il se sera enfui."

But hee shall dwell in that citie vntill hee stande before the Congregation in iudgement, or vntill the death of the hie Priest that shall be in those daies: then shall the slaier returne, and come vnto his owne citie, and vnto his owne house, euen vnto the citie from whence he fled.

7 On consacra à cet effet: Kédech en Galilée, dans la montagne de Nephtali; Sichem, dans la montagne d’Ephraïm; Kiryath-Arba ou Hébron, dans la montagne de Juda.

Then they appointed Kedesh in Galil in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba, (which is Hebron) in the mountaine of Iudah.

8 Du côté oriental du Jourdain, vers Jéricho, on avait déjà choisi: Bécer, dans le désert, dans le plat pays, parmi les possessions de la tribu de Ruben; Ramoth, en Galaad, parmi celles de la tribu de Dan, et Golân, dans le Basan, parmi celles de Manassé.

And on the other side Iorden toward Iericho Eastward, they appoynted Bezer in the wildernesse vpon the plaine, out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead, out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan, out of the tribe of Manasseh.

9 Telles furent les villes déterminées pour tous les enfants d’Israël et pour l’étranger séjournant parmi eux, comme refuge de tout meurtrier par imprudence, afin qu’il ne pût périr sous la main du vengeur du sang avant d’avoir comparu devant le tribunal.

These were the cities appoynted for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that soiourned among them, that whosoeuer killed any person ignorantly, might flee thither, and not die by the hande of the auenger of blood, vntill hee stoode before the Congregation.
