Josué 2

1 Josué, fils de Noun, envoya secrètement, de Chittîm, deux explorateurs, en leur disant: "Allez, examinez le pays, notamment Jéricho." Ils s’en allèrent, et arrivèrent dans la maison d’une courtisane, appelée Rahab, où ils prirent leur gîte.

And Joshua the son of Nun sent from Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot’s house, named Rahab, and lodged there.

2 On l’annonça au roi de Jéricho, en disant: "Des hommes sont venus ici, cette nuit, d’entre les enfants d’Israël, pour explorer la contrée."

And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in here to night of the children of Israel to search out the country.

3 Et le roi de Jéricho envoya dire à Rahab: "Livre les hommes qui sont venus chez toi, qui sont entrés dans ta maison, car c’est pour explorer tout ce pays qu’ils sont venus."

And the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that have come to thee, who have entered into thy house: for they have come to search out all the country.

4 Mais la femme avait emmené les deux hommes et les avait cachés. Elle répondit: "Il est vrai, ces hommes sont venus chez moi, mais j’ignorais d’où ils étaient.

And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men to me, but I knew not where they were:

5 Comme on allait fermer les portes à la nuit, ces hommes sont sortis, je ne sais où ils sont allés. Mettez-vous vite à leur poursuite, vous pourrez les atteindre."

And it came to pass about the time of shutting the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out: where the men went I know not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them.

6 Or, elle les avait fait monter sur le toit et les avait cachés sous des tiges de lin, étalées par elle sur le toit.

But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.

7 Les gens du roi les poursuivirent dans la direction du Jourdain, vers les gués, et l’on ferma les portes aussitôt qu’ils furent sortis pour les poursuivre.

And the men pursued them the way to Jordan to the fords: and as soon as they who pursued them had gone out, they shut the gate.

8 Avant que ses hôtes fussent couchés, Rahab s’en vint les trouver sur le toit

And before they had lain down, she came up to them upon the roof;

9 et leur dit: Je sais que l’Eternel vous a livré ce pays, que vous nous avez terrifiés, que tous les habitants du pays ont perdu courage à votre approche.

And she said to the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror hath fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.

10 Car nous avons appris comment l’Eternel a mis à sec devant vous les eaux de la mer des Joncs, quand vous êtes sortis de l’Egypte; et aussi ce que vous avez fait aux deux rois amorréens, de delà le Jourdain, à Sihôn et à Og, que vous avez exterminés.

For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side of Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.

11 Nous l’avons appris et le cœur nous a manqué, et personne ne s’est plus senti de courage devant vous! C’Est qu’aussi l’Eternel, votre Dieu, est Dieu en haut dans le ciel comme ici-bas sur la terre.

And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.

12 Et maintenant jurez-moi par l’Eternel, puisque j’ai agi charitablement avec vous, qu’à votre tour vous agirez avec bonté envers la maison de mon père, et m’en donnerez un gage certain;

Now therefore, I pray you, swear to me by the LORD, since I have showed you kindness, that ye will also show kindness to my father’s house, and give me a true token:

13 que vous épargnerez mon père et ma mère, mes frères et mes sœurs et tous ceux qui leur appartiennent, et que vous nous préserverez de la mort."

And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.

14 Les hommes lui répondirent: "Notre vie répondra de la vôtre, si vous ne divulguez pas notre entretien; alors, quand l’Eternel nous aura livré ce pays, nous agirons à ton égard avec bienveillance et loyauté."

And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.

15 Elle les fit descendre par la fenêtre au moyen d’une corde (car sa maison était contiguë au rempart, et c’est dans le rempart même qu’elle demeurait);

Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.

16 et elle leur dit: "Pour ne pas être atteints par ceux qui vous poursuivent, dirigez-vous du côté de la montagne, restez-y cachés trois jours, jusqu’au retour de ceux qui vous poursuivent, puis vous vous remettrez en route."

And she said to them, Depart to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers have returned: and afterward ye may go your way.

17 Et les hommes lui dirent: "Voici comment nous nous acquitterons du serment que tu nous as fait prêter:

And the men said to her, We will be blameless of this thy oath which thou hast made us swear.

18 quand nous entrerons dans la contrée, tu attacheras ce cordon de fil écarlate à la fenêtre par laquelle tu nous as fait descendre, et tu réuniras dans ta maison ton père, ta mère, tes frères et toute ta famille.

Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window by which thou didst let us down: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household, home to thee.

19 Dès lors, quiconque franchira les portes de ta maison pour aller au dehors sera responsable de sa perte, et nous en serons innocents; mais quiconque restera avec toi dans la maison, son sang retombera sur nos têtes, si l’on porte la main sur lui.

And it shall be, that whoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.

20 Si toutefois tu révèles le présent entretien, nous serons également dégagés du serment que tu nous as fait prononcer."

And if thou shalt utter this our business, then we will be free of thy oath which thou hast made us to swear.

21 Elle répondit: "Soit fait selon vos paroles!" Elle les congédia et ils s’en allèrent; et elle attacha le cordon écarlate à la fenêtre.

And she said, According to your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

22 Pour eux, ils se dirigèrent vers la montagne, où ils demeurèrent trois jours, jusqu’au retour des hommes envoyés à leur poursuite. Ceux-ci avaient exploré toute la route et ne les avaient point trouvés.

And they went, and came to the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers had returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.

23 Alors les deux hommes redescendirent de la montagne, repassèrent le Jourdain et vinrent trouver Josué, fils de Noun, à qui ils firent part de toute l’aventure

So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them:

24 et ils dirent à Josué: "Assurément, l’Eternel a livré tout ce pays entre nos mains, et déjà tous ses habitants tremblent devant nous."

And they said to Joshua, Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.
