Job 9
1 Job reprit la parole et dit:
Then Job answered and said,
2 Oui, je sais qu’il en est ainsi: comment l’homme aurait-il gain de cause avec Dieu?
I know of a truth that it is so: for how shall a mortal man be just before the Lord?
3 Si nous désirions discuter avec lui, pas une fois sur mille il ne daignerait nous répondre.
For if he would enter into judgement with him, [God] would not listen to him, so that he should answer to one of his charges of a thousand.
4 Eminemment sage, triomphant de force, qui jamais lui tint tête et s’en trouva bien?
For he is wise in mind, and mighty, and great: who has hardened himself against him and endured?
5 Il déplace les montagnes à l’improviste et les bouleverse dans sa colère.
Who wears out the mountains, and [men] know it not: who overturns them in anger.
6 Il fait trembler la terre sur ses bases et ébranle les colonnes qui la supportent.
Who shakes the [earth] under heaven from its foundations, and its pillars totter.
7 II donne un ordre au soleil, et le soleil ne paraît point; il met un sceau sur les étoiles.
Who commands the sun, and it rises not; and he seals up the stars.
8 A lui seul, il déploie les cieux; il chemine sur la crête des vagues.
Who alone has stretched out the heavens, and walks on the sea as on firm ground.
9 Ila fait la Grande Ourse, l’Orion, les Pléiades et les demeures sidérales du Midi.
Who makes Pleias, and Hesperus, and Arcturus, and the chambers of the south.
10 Il accomplit des merveilles sans fin, des prodiges qui ne se peuvent compter.
Who does great and unsearchable things; glorious also and excellent things, innumerable.
11 Ah! S’Il passait auprès de moi, je ne le verrais point; s’il se glissait sous mes yeux, je ne le remarquerais pas.
If ever he should go beyond me, I shall not see him: if he should pass by me, neither thus have I known [it].
12 Quand il empoigne quelqu’un, qui lui fera lâcher prise? Qui lui dira: "Que fais-tu?"
If he would take away, who shall turn him back? or who shall say to him, What have you done?
13 Dieu ne refoule pas sa colère; sous ses coups plient les satellites de l’orgueil.
For [if] he has turned away [his] anger, the whales under heaven have stooped under him.
14 Et moi j’oserais lui répliquer, je ferais assaut de paroles avec lui,
Oh then that he would listen to me, or judge my cause.
15 moi, qui tout innocent que je fusse, ne trouverais rien à lui répondre, et demanderais simplement grâce à mon juge!
For though I be righteous, he will not listen to me: I will entreat his judgement.
16 Dût-il même se rendre à mon appel, je ne croirais pas qu’il écoute ma voix;
And if I should call and he should not listen, I can’t believe that he has listened to my voice.
17 car il m’accable sous un vent de tempête et multiplie gratuitement mes blessures.
Let him not crush me with a dark storm: but he has made by bruises many without cause.
18 Il ne me permet pas de reprendre haleine, tant il m’abreuve d’amertumes.
For he suffers me not to take breath, but he has filled me with bitterness.
19 S’Agit-il de faire preuve de force, il est là! S’Agit-il de jugement, il dira: "Qui pourrait m’assigner?"
For indeed he is strong in power: who then shall resist his judgement?
20 Fussé-je innocent, ma bouche me déclarerait coupable! Fussé-je sans reproche, elle me convaincrait de perversité!
For though I should seem righteous, my mouth will be profane: and though I should seem blameless, I shall be proved perverse.
21 Oui, je suis sans reproche! Je ne me soucie pas de la vie, je suis las de l’existence.
For even if I have sinned, I know it not [in] my soul: but my life is taken away.
22 Tout revient au même: aussi dis-je que juste et méchant, il les fait également périr.
Therefore I said, Wrath slays the great and mighty man.
23 Si un cataclysme entraîne des morts soudaines, il se rit de l’épreuve des innocents.
For the worthless die, but the righteous are laughed to scorn.
24 Par lui, la terre a été livrée aux impies: il voile les yeux de ceux qui y rendent la justice. Si ce n’est lui, qui serait-ce?
For they are delivered into the hands of the unrighteous [man]: he covers the faces of the judges [of the earth]: but if it be not he, who is it?
25 Mes jours sont plus rapides qu’un courrier; ils s’enfuient sans avoir vu le bonheur.
But my life is swifter than a post: [my days] have fled away, and they knew it not.
26 Ils passent comme des barques de jonc, comme l’aigle qui se précipite sur la proie.
Or again, is there a trace of [their] path [left] by ships? or is there one of the flying eagle as it seeks [its] prey?
27 Quand je dis: "Je veux oublier ma souffrance, laisser là ma mine attristée et reprendre mes esprits",
And if I should say, I will forget to speak, I will bow down my face and groan;
28 je suis envahi par la crainte de mes tourments, sachant bien que tu ne m’absoudras pas.
I quake in all my limbs, for I know that you will not leave me alone [as] innocent.
29 Je serai déclaré coupable: pourquoi donc prendre une peine inutile?
But since I am ungodly, why have I not died?
30 Dussé-je me laver dans de la neige fondue et purifier mes mains avec de la potasse,
For if I should wash myself with snow, and purge myself with pure hands,
31 aussitôt tu me plongerais dans une fosse fangeuse, et mes vêtements mêmes auraient horreur de moi.
you had thoroughly plunged me in filth, and my garment had abhorred me.
32 Car il n’est pas un homme comme moi pour que je lui réponde et que nous paraissions ensemble en justice.
For you are not man like me, with whom I could contend, that we might come together to judgement.
33 Il n’existe pas d’arbitre entre nous, qui puisse poser sa main sur tous deux.
Would that [he] our mediator were [present], and a reprover, and one who should hear [the cause] between both.
34 Qu’il écarte de moi sa verge, et que ses terreurs cessent de peser sur moi.
Let him remove [his] rod from me, and let not his fear terrify me:
35 Alors je parlerai sans le redouter, car je n’en suis pas là dans le secret de ma conscience.
so shall I not be afraid, but I will speak: for I am not thus conscious [of guilt].
