Job 4
1 Eliphaz de Têmân prit la parole et dit:
Then Eliphaz the Thaemanite answered and said,
2 Si l’on essaie de te répliquer, tu en seras peut-être contrarié; mais qui peut contenir ses paroles?
Hast you been often spoken to in distress? but who shall endure the force of your words?
3 Certes, tu as fait la leçon à bien des gens; des bras qui tombaient de lassitude, tu les fortifiais.
For whereas you have instructed many, and have strengthened the hands of the weak one,
4 Tes paroles relevaient celui qui trébuchait, les genoux qui chancelaient, tu les raffermissais.
and have supported the failing with words, and have imparted courage to feeble knees.
5 Et maintenant que le malheur te visite, tu te décourages; il met la main sur toi, et tu es consterné!
Yet now [that] pain has come upon you, and touched you, you are troubled.
6 Ta piété n’est-elle pas pour te donner confiance? L’Intégrité de ta conduite n’est-elle pas ton espoir?
Is not your fear [founded] in folly, your hope also, and the mischief of your way?
7 Songes-y donc: est-il un innocent qui ait succombé? Où est-il arrivé que des justes aient péri?
Remember then who has perished, being pure? or when were the true-hearted utterly destroyed?
8 Pour moi, j’ai observé ce fait: ceux qui cultivent l’iniquité et sèment le mal les récoltent.
Accordingly as I have seen men ploughing barren places, and they that sow them will reap sorrows for themselves.
9 Un souffle de Dieu les fait périr, le vent de sa colère les anéantit.
They shall perish by the command of the Lord, and shall be utterly consumed by the breath of his wrath.
10 Que le lion rugisse, que le fauve pousse des hurlements: les dents du lionceau sont brisées.
The strength of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the exulting cry of serpents are quenched.
11 La bête féroce périt, faute de proie, et les petits de la lionne sont dispersés.
The old lion has perished for lack of food, and the lions' whelps have forsaken one another.
12 Quant à moi, il m’est venu une révélation furtive: mon oreille en saisit un léger murmure.
But if there had been any truth in your words, none of these evils would have befallen you. Shall not mine ear receive excellent [revelations] from him?
13 Ce fut dans le flot de pensées qu’apportent les visions nocturnes, alors qu’un lourd sommeil pèse sur les hommes.
But [as when] terror falls upon men, with dread and a sound in the night,
14 Je me sentis envahi par la terreur et le frisson; tous mes os en frémirent de peur.
horror and trembling seized me, and caused all my bones greatly to shake.
15 Un souffle effleura ma face, et les poils se hérissèrent sur ma chair.
And a spirit came before my face; and my hair and flesh quivered.
16 Une figure, dont les traits m’étaient inconnus, se tint là sous mes yeux, et j’entendis 'le faible son d’une voix:
I arose and perceived it not: I looked, and there, was no form before my eyes: but I only heard a breath and a voice, [saying],
17 "L’Homme me fut-il dit peut-il être juste devant Dieu? Le mortel peut-il être pur au gré de son Créateur?
What, shall a mortal be pure before the Lord? or a man be blameless in regard to his works?
18 Mais il ne se fie même pas à ses serviteurs; jusque dans ses anges il constate des défaillances!
Whereas he trust not in his servants, and perceives perverseness in his angels.
19 Que sera-ce des hommes, habitants de maisons d’argile, qui ont leurs fondements dans la poussière, et qu’on foule aux pieds comme un ver?
But [as for] them that dwell in houses of clay, of whom we also are formed of the same clay, he smites them like a moth.
20 Du matin au soir, ils se trouvent écrasés; sans qu’on y fasse attention, ils périssent à jamais.
And from the morning to evening they no longer exist: they have perished, because they can’t help themselves.
21 Ah! Le fil qui les soutenait est rompu: ils meurent, sans avoir acquis la sagesse!
For he blows upon them, and they are withered: they have perished for lack of wisdom.
