Job 38
1 L’Eternel répondit à Job du sein de la tempête et dit:
Then Yahweh responded to Job, out of a storm, and said: —
2 Quel est celui qui dénigre les desseins de Dieu par des discours dépourvus de sens?
Who is it that darkeneth counsel, by words, without knowledge?
3 Ceins donc tes reins comme un homme: je vais t’interroger et tu m’instruiras.
Gird, I pray thee—like a strong man—thy loins, that I may ask thee, and inform thou me:
4 Où étais-tu lorsque je fondais la terre? Dis-le, si tu en as quelque connaissance.
Where wast thou, when I founded the earth? Tell, if thou knowest understanding!
5 Qui a fixé ses dimensions, si tu le sais, ou qui a tendu sur elle le cordeau?
Who set the measurements thereof, if thou knowest? Or who stretched out over it a line?
6 Sur quoi sont assis ses piliers, ou qui a lancé sa pierre angulaire,
Whereon were the pedestals thereof sunk? Or who laid the corner stone thereof; —
7 tandis que les étoiles du matin chantaient en chœur, et que tous les fils de Dieu poussaient des cris de joie?
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8 Qui a fermé la mer avec des portes, quand elle sortit jaillissante du sein maternel,
Or [who] shut in, with double doors, the sea, when, bursting out of the womb, it came forth;
9 quand je lui donnai la nuée pour vêtement et une brume épaisse pour langes;
When I put a cloud as the garment thereof, and a thick cloud as the swaddling-band thereof;
10 quand je brisai son élan par mes barrières et lui posai des verrous et des portes,
And brake off for it my boundary, and fixed a bar and double doors;
11 et que je lui dis: "Jusqu’ici tu viendras et non au-delà: ici s’arrêtera l’orgueil de tes flots?"
And said—Hitherto, shalt thou come, and no further, —and, here, shalt thou set a limit to the majesty of thy waves?
12 As-tu jamais de ta vie donné des ordres au matin, assigné sa place à l’aurore,
Since thy days [began] hast thou commanded the morning? or caused the dawn to know its place;
13 pour qu’elle saisisse les bords de la terre et en rejette les méchants en une secousse?
That it might lay hold of the wings of the earth, and the lawless be shaken out of it?
14 Quand elle paraît, la terre se transforme comme l’argile sous le sceau, et les choses se présentent comme un riche vêtement.
It transformeth itself like the clay of a seal, so that things stand forth like one arrayed;
15 Les méchants sont privés de leur lumière à eux, et leur bras déjà levé est brisé.
That their light may be withdrawn from the lawless, and, the lofty arm, be shivered.
16 As-tu pénétré jusqu’aux sources de la mer, as-tu circulé au fonds de l’abîme?
Hast thou entered as far as the springs of the sea? Or, through the secret recesses of the resounding deep, hast thou wandered?
17 Les portes de la mort se sont-elles dévoilées devant toi? As-tu vu l’entrée du royaume des ombres?
Have the gates of death been disclosed to thee? And, the gates of the death-shade, couldst thou descry?
18 As-tu mesuré l’immense étendue de la terre? Dis-le, si tu sais tout cela.
Hast thou well considered, even the breadths of the earth? Tell—if thou knowest it all!
19 Quel chemin mène à la demeure de la lumière, et où est l’habitation des ténèbres,
Where then is the way, the light shall abide? And, the darkness, where then is its place?
20 pour que tu les conduises dans leur domaine et reconnaisses les avenues de leur maison?
That thou mayest conduct it unto the bound thereof, and that thou mayest perceive the paths to its house.
21 Tu le sais sans doute! Car tu étais né dès lors, et grand est le nombre de tes jours!
Thou knowest, for, then, hadst thou been born! And, in number, thy days are many!
22 Es-tu entré dans les trésors de la neige, as-tu aperçu les dépôts de la grêle,
Hast thou entered into the treasuries of the snow? And, the treasuries of the hail, couldst thou see?
23 que je tiens en réserve pour les temps de détresse, pour le jour du combat et de la guerre?
Which I have reserved for a time of distress, for the day of conflict and of war?
24 Quelle est la voie par où se disperse la lumière, par où le vent d’Est se répand sur la terre?
Where then is the way the lightning is parted? The east wind spreadeth itself abroad over the earth.
25 Qui a creusé des rigoles à l’averse, une route à l’éclair sonore,
Who hath cloven—for the torrent—a channel? Or a way for the lightning of thunders;
26 pour arroser des régions inhabitées, le désert où il n’y a pas d’hommes,
To give rain over the no-man’s land, the desert, where no son of earth is;
27 pour abreuver les terres incultes et sauvages et faire pousser l’herbe nouvelle des prairies?
To satisfy the wild and the wilderness, to cause to spring forth the meadow of young grass?
28 La pluie a-t-elle un père? Qui engendre les gouttes de la rosée?
Hath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of dew?
29 De quel sein sort la glace, et le givre du ciel, qui l’a enfanté?
Out of whose womb, came forth the ice? And, the hoar-frost of the heavens, who hath given it birth?
30 Les eaux se condensent comme la pierre et la surface des eaux se contracte.
Like a stone, are the waters congealed, and, the face of the roaring deep, becometh firm!
31 Est-ce toi qui noues les bandeaux des Pléiades ou qui relâches les liens de l’Orion?
Canst thou bind the fetters of the Pleiades? Or, the bands of Orion, canst thou unloose?
32 Est-ce toi qui fais paraître les planètes en leur temps et qui diriges la Grande-Ourse avec ses petits?
Canst thou bring forth the signs of the Zodiac each in its season? Or, the Bear and her Young, canst thou lead?
33 Connais-tu les lois du ciel? Est-ce toi qui règles sa force d’action sur la terre?
Knowest thou, the statutes of the heavens? Or didst thou appoint his dominion over the earth?
34 Te suffit-il d’élever ta voix vers la nuée, pour qu’elle t’envoie des masses d’eau?
Canst thou lift up, to the thick cloud, thy voice, and the overflow of waters cover thee?
35 Est-ce toi qui commandes aux éclairs de partir? Te disent-ils: "Nous voici?"
Canst thou send forth the lightnings, so that they go, and say to thee, Behold us?
36 Qui a mis de la sagesse, dans la brume sombre, ou qui a donné au météore l’intelligence?
Who hath put—into cloud-forms—wisdom? Or who hath given—to the meteor—understanding?
37 Qui pourrait dénombrer les nuages avec sagacité, et qui incline les amphores du ciel,
Who can count the thin clouds, in wisdom? And, the bottles of the heavens, who can empty out;
38 de manière à agréger la poussière en une masse compacte et à coller ensemble les glèbes de la terre?
When the dust is cast into a clod, and the lumps are bound together?
39 Est-ce toi qui poursuis la proie pour le lion, qui assouvis la voracité des lionceaux,
Wilt thou hunt—for the Lioness—prey? Or, the craving of the Strong Lion, wilt thou satisfy;
40 lorsqu’ils sont tapis dans leurs tanières ou se tiennent aux aguets dans les fourrés?
When they settle down in dens, abide in covert, for lying in wait?
41 Qui prépare au corbeau sa pâture, quand ses petits crient vers Dieu et errent çà et là faute de nourriture?
Who prepareth for the Raven his nourishment, —when his young ones—unto GOD—cry out, [when] they wander for lack of food?
