Job 37
1 C’Est aussi ce qui jette la frayeur dans mon cœur et le fait vivement tressauter.
At this also mine heart is astonied, and is mooued out of his place.
2 Ecoutez attentivement le grondement de sa voix et le roulement qui sort de sa bouche.
Heare the sound of his voyce, and the noyse that goeth out of his mouth.
3 Il le prolonge sous toute la voûte des cieux, et ses éclairs brillent jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre.
He directeth it vnder the whole heauen, and his light vnto the endes of the world.
4 A leur suite, c’est un bruit qui rugit: il tonne de sa voix majestueuse, et quand cette voix se fait entendre, il ne les retient plus.
After it a noyse soundeth: hee thundereth with the voyce of his maiestie, and hee will not stay them when his voyce is heard.
5 Dieu fait retentir merveilleusement la voix de son tonnerre; il accomplit de grandes choses qui dépassent notre connaissance.
God thundereth marueilously with his voyce: he worketh great things, which we know not.
6 Car il dit à la neige: "Apparais sur la terre!" II envoie la pluie abondante, ses puissantes averses.
For he sayth to the snowe, Be thou vpon the earth: likewise to the small rayne and to the great rayne of his power.
7 Alors il paralyse les bras de tous les hommes, afin que ces hommes, son œuvre à lui, apprennent à le connaître.
With the force thereof he shutteth vp euery man, that all men may knowe his worke.
8 Et les fauves rentrent dans leur tanière et se terrent dans leur gîte.
Then the beastes go into the denne, and remaine in their places.
9 L’Ouragan surgit de ses retraites, le froid est amené par les vents d’aquilon.
The whirlewind commeth out of the South, and the colde from the North winde.
10 Au souffle de Dieu se forme la glace et se contractent les nappes d’eau.
At the breath of God the frost is giuen, and the breadth of the waters is made narrowe.
11 Il charge aussi la nue de vapeurs humides, dissémine ses nuages que traversent les éclairs.
He maketh also the cloudes to labour, to water the earth, and scattereth the cloude of his light.
12 Et ces nuages se déplacent en tourbillonnant sous son impulsion, en vue de leur besogne, pour exécuter ses ordres sur la surface du globe terrestre.
And it is turned about by his gouernment, that they may doe whatsoeuer he commandeth them vpon the whole worlde:
13 Il les suscite tantôt comme un fléau pour la terre, tantôt comme une source de bienfaits.
Whether it be for punishment, or for his lande, or of mercie, he causeth it to come.
14 Ecoute, Job, tout ceci; lève-toi et considère les merveilles de Dieu.
Hearken vnto this, O Iob: stand and consider the wonderous workes of God.
15 Comprends-tu les lois qu’il leur impose et comment il fait briller ses nuages lumineux?
Diddest thou knowe when God disposed them? and caused the light of his cloud to shine?
16 Comprends-tu les déploiements de la nuée, les prodiges de Celui qui possède la science parfaite?
Hast thou knowen the varietie of the cloude, and the wonderous workes of him, that is perfite in knowledge?
17 Toi, dont les vêtements deviennent trop chauds, dès que la terre recouvre le calme sous l’influence du midi,
Or howe thy clothes are warme, when he maketh the earth quiet through the South winde?
18 pourrais-tu lui aider à étendre les cieux, solides comme un miroir de métal?
Hast thou stretched out the heaues, which are strong, and as a molten glasse?
19 Apprends-moi ce que nous pourrions lui dire: dans les ténèbres où nous sommes, nous manquons d’arguments.
Tell vs what we shall say vnto him: for we can not dispose our matter because of darknes.
20 Devra-t-on lui rendre compte quand je parle? Jamais homme a-t-il demandé à être anéanti?
Shall it be told him when I speake? or shall man speake when he shalbe destroyed?
21 Or donc, personne ne peut regarder le soleil qui brille radieux dans le ciel, lorsque le vent qui passe l’a nettoyé.
And nowe men see not the light, which shineth in the cloudes, but the winde passeth and clenseth them.
22 Si l’or vient du septentrion, Dieu, lui, demeure couvert d’une redoutable majesté.
The brightnesse commeth out of the North: the praise thereof is to God, which is terrible.
23 Le Tout-Puissant, nous ne pouvons l’atteindre, lui qui est grand par la force; mais le droit et la parfaite justice, il ne les écrase point!
It is the Almightie: we can not finde him out: he is excellent in power and iudgement, and aboundant in iustice: he afflicteth not.
24 C’Est pourquoi les hommes le révèrent; quant à lui, il n’abaisse ses regards sur aucun des prétendus sages.
Let men therefore feare him: for he will not regarde any that are wise in their owne conceit.
