Job 34

1 Elihou reprit et dit:

And Elius continued, and said,

2 Ecoutez, ô sages, mes discours, et vous, hommes instruits, prêtez-moi votre attention.

Hear me, you wise men; listen, you that have knowledge.

3 Car l’oreille apprécie les discours comme le palais déguste la nourriture.

For the ear tries words, and the mouth tastes meat.

4 Mettons-nous en quête de ce qui est juste, examinons entre nous ce qui est bon.

Let us choose judgment to ourselves: let us know amount ourselves what is right.

5 Car Job a dit: "Je suis innocent, et Dieu m’a refusé justice.

For Job has said, I am righteous: the Lord has removed my judgment.

6 En dépit de mon bon droit, je passe pour menteur; cruel est le coup qui m’a frappé, sans que j’aie failli!"

And he has erred in my judgment: my wound is severe without unrighteousness [of mine].

7 Y a-t-il un homme comme Job, buvant le blasphème comme de l’eau,

What man is as Job, drinking scorning like water?

8 faisant cause commune avec les artisans d’iniquité et allant de pair avec les malfaiteurs?

[saying], I have not sinned, nor committed ungodliness, nor had fellowship with workers of iniquity, to go with the ungodly.

9 Car il a dit: "L’Homme ne gagne rien à être en bons termes avec Dieu!"

For you should not say, There shall be no visitation of a man, whereas [there is] a visitation on him from the Lord.

10 C’Est pourquoi, gens d’intelligence, écoutez-moi: loin de Dieu l’iniquité et du Tout-Puissant l’injustice!

Therefore hear me, you that are wise in heart: far be it from me to sin before the Lord, and to pervert righteousness before the almighty.

11 Car il paie chacun selon ses œuvres et lui assigne le sort mérité par sa conduite.

Yes, he renders to a man accordingly as each of them does, and in a man's path he will find him.

12 Non, en vérité, Dieu ne commet pas de mal, le Tout-Puissant ne fausse pas la justice.

And think you that the Lord will do wrong, or will the Almighty who made the earth wrest judgment?

13 Qui lui a confié la direction de la terre? Qui a mis tout l’univers entre ses mains?

And who is he that made [the whole world] under heaven, and all things therein?

14 S’Il n’avait de pensée que pour lui-même, s’il retirait à lui son esprit et son souffle,

For if he would confine, and restrain his spirit with himself;

15 toutes les créatures périraient du coup, et l’homme retournerait à la poussière.

all flesh would die together, and every mortal would return to the earth, whence also he was formed.

16 Or, si tu jouis de ton bon sens, écoute ceci, prête l’oreille au son de mes paroles:

Take heed lest he rebuke [you]: hear this, listen to the voice of words.

17 Celui qui hait la justice pourrait-il régner? Oseras-tu incriminer l’Etre infiniment juste?

Behold then the one that hates iniquities, and that destroys the wicked, who is for ever just.

18 Est-il permis de dire au roi: "scélérat!" et aux princes: "criminels!"

[He is] ungodly that says to a king, You are a transgressor, [that says] to princes, O most ungodly one.

19 Eh bien! Lui ne prend pas parti pour les grands, et ne favorise pas le riche contre le pauvre, car ils sont tous l’œuvre de sa main.

[Such a one] as would not reverence the face of an honorable man, neither knows how to give honor to the great, so as that their persons should be respected.

20 En un clin d’œil, ils meurent, et au milieu de la nuit, le peuple s’agite et ils disparaissent; on supprime les puissants, sans qu’une main se lève.

But it shall turn out vanity to them, to cry and beseech a man; for they dealt unlawfully, the poor being turned aside [from their right].

21 C’Est que ses yeux sont ouverts sur les voies de l’homme, il observe chacun de ses pas.

For he surveys the works of men, and nothing of what they do has escaped him.

22 Point de ténèbres, point d’ombre si profonde où puissent se cacher les malfaiteurs.

Neither shall there be a place for the workers of iniquity to hide themselves.

23 Car Dieu n’a pas besoin de surveiller longuement un homme, pour le faire comparaître en justice.

For he will not lay upon a man more [than right].

24 Il brise les puissants sans long examen et met d’autres à leur place.

For the Lord looks down upon all men, who comprehends unsearchable things, glorious also and excellent things without number.

25 C’Est parce qu’il connaît leurs œuvres, qu’il les renverse de nuit et les écrase.

Who discovers their works, and will bring night about [upon them], and they shall be brought low.

26 En qualité d’impies, il les frappe aux yeux de nombreux spectateurs,

And he quite destroys the ungodly, for they are seen before him.

27 les punissant de s’être détournés de lui, d’avoir méconnu toutes ses voies,

Because they turned aside from the law of God, and did not regard his ordinances,

28 d’avoir fait monter jusqu’à lui les cris du faible, et retentir à ses oreilles la protestation des miséreux.

so as to bring before him the cry of the needy; for he will hear the cry of the poor.

29 Et s’il fait l’apaisement, qui le lui reprochera? Quand il cache sa face, qui pourra le voir? II domine et sur les nations et sur les individus,

And he will give quiet, and who will condemn? and he will hide his face, and who shall see him? whether [it be done] against a nation, or against a man also:

30 ne voulant pas du règne des hommes pervers, de ceux qui sont un piège pour les peuples.

causing a hypocrite to be king, because of the waywardness of the people.

31 Se peut-il qu’on dise à Dieu: "J’Ai expié sans être coupable.

For [there is] one that says to the Mighty One, I have received [blessings]; I will not take a pledge:

32 Ce qu’il m’est impossible de voir, apprends-le moi toi-même; si j’ai commis des injustices, je ne récidiverai pas?"

I will see apart from myself: do you show me if I have done unrighteousness; I will not do [so] any more.

33 Est-ce sous ton inspiration qu’Il doit rémunérer, parce que tu exprimes ton dédain ou que tu manifestes tes préférences, toi et non moi? Ce que tu sais, expose-le donc.

Will he take vengeance for it on you, whereas you will put [it] far [from you]? for you shall choose, and not I; and what you know, speak you.

34 Les gens sensés me le diront, les hommes sages qui m’écoutent:

Because the wise in heart shall say this, and a wise man listens to my word.

35 "Job ne discourt pas en connaissance de cause, ses paroles ne sont pas raisonnables.

But Job has not spoken with understanding, his words are not [uttered] with knowledge.

36 Mon souhait serait que Job fût éprouvé encore longtemps, à cause de ses réponses dignes d’hommes iniques;

Howbeit do you learn, Job: no longer make answer as the foolish:

37 car à son péché il ajoute une faute plus grave: il pense triompher au milieu de nous et prodigue ses propos contre Dieu."

that we add not to our sins: for iniquity will be reckoned against us, if [we] speak many words before the Lord.
