Job 29
1 Job, poursuivant l’exposé de son thème, dit:
Moreover Job continued his parable, and said,
2 Ah! Que ne suis-je tel que j’étais aux temps passés, aux jours où Dieu me protégeait;
Oh that I were as [in] months past, as [in] the days [when] God preserved me;
3 où son flambeau brillait sur ma tête, et où sa lumière me guidait dans les ténèbres;
When his candle shined upon my head, [and when] by his light I walked [through] darkness;
4 tel que j’étais aux jours de mon automne, alors que l’amitié de Dieu s’étendait sur ma demeure;
As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God [was] upon my tabernacle;
5 que le Tout-Puissant était encore avec moi et que j’étais entouré de mes jeunes gens;
When the Almighty [was] yet with me, [when] my children [were] about me;
6 quand je baignais mes pieds dans la crème, et que le rocher ruisselait pour moi de flots d’huile!
When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil;
7 Quand je me dirigeais vers la Porte, au seuil de la cité, et fixais mon siège sur la place publique,
When I went out to the gate through the city, [when] I prepared my seat in the street!
8 les jeunes, en me voyant, se cachaient; les vieillards se levaient et se tenaient debout.
The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the aged arose, [and] stood up.
9 Les grands retenaient leurs paroles et posaient la main sur la bouche.
The princes refrained talking, and laid [their] hand on their mouth.
10 La voix des seigneurs expirait sur leurs lèvres, et leur langue se collait à leur palais;
The nobles held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.
11 car l’oreille qui m’entendait me proclamait heureux, et l’œil qui me voyait rendait témoignage pour moi.
When the ear heard [me], then it blessed me; and when the eye saw [me], it gave witness to me:
12 C’Est que je sauvais le pauvre, criant au secours, et l’orphelin sans soutien.
Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and [him that had] none to help him.
13 La bénédiction du désespéré allait à moi, et je mettais de la joie au cœur de la veuve.
The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.
14 Je me revêtais d’équité comme d’une parure, mon esprit de justice était mon manteau et mon turban.
I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment [was] as a robe and a diadem.
15 J’Étais les yeux de l’aveugle, j’étais les pieds du boiteux.
I was eyes to the blind, and feet [was] I to the lame.
16 J’Étais un père pour les malheureux; la cause de l’inconnu, je l’étudiais à fond.
I [was] a father to the poor: and the cause [which] I knew not I searched out.
17 Je brisais la mâchoire du malfaiteur, et j’arrachais la proie d’entre ses dents.
And I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.
18 Et je disais: "Je finirai avec mon nid; comme le phénix je vivrai de longs jours.
Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply [my] days as the sand.
19 Ma racine sera en contact avec l’eau, la rosée se posera, la nuit, sur mon branchage.
My root [was] spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch.
20 Ma gloire se renouvellera sans cesse, et mon arc se rajeunira dans ma main."
My glory [was] fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand.
21 Ils m’écoutaient, pleins d’attente; ils faisaient silence pour entendre mon avis.
Unto me [men] gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel.
22 Quand j’avais fini de parler, ils ne répliquaient pas, et mes discours s’épandaient sur eux.
After my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.
23 Ils m’attendaient comme la pluie; ils ouvraient la bouche comme pour l’ondée printanière.
And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide [as] for the latter rain.
24 Je leur souriais et ils n’osaient y croire; jamais ils n’éteignaient le rayonnement de ma face.
[If] I laughed on them, they believed [it] not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.
25 Volontiers j’allais vers eux, m’asseyant à leur tête, et j’étais comme un roi dans son armée, comme quelqu’un: qui console des affligés.
I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one [that] comforteth the mourners.
