Job 28
1 Certes, il existe des mines pour l’argent et des gîtes pour 'l’or que l’on affine.
Though there is, for silver, a vein, and a place for the gold they refine;
2 Le fer est extrait du sol, et la roche, fondue, donne du cuivre.
Iron, out of the ore, is taken, and, stone, poureth out copper;
3 Le mineur a posé des limites à l’obscurité; jusqu’aux extrêmes profondeurs il va chercher le minerai caché dans les ténèbres et l’ombre de la mort.
An end, hath one set to the darkness, and, into every extremity, is, he, making search, for the stone of darkness and death-shade;
4 Il perce des tranchées à l’écart des habitations; ignoré du pied des passants, il est suspendu et ballotté loin des hommes.
He hath sunken a shaft, away from the inhabitants; Places forsaken by the foot, they hang down, away from men, sway to and fro;
5 La terre d’où sort le pain, ses entrailles sont bouleversées comme par le feu.
As for the earth, out of it, cometh forth bread, and, under it, is upturned, as it were fire;
6 Ses pierres sont des nids de saphirs, et là s’offre au regard la poudre d’or.
The place of sapphires, are the stones thereof, and it hath, nuggets of gold: —
7 On y arrive par un chemin que l’oiseau de proie ne connaît pas, que l’œil du vautour ne distingue point.
A path, the vulture hath not discerned, nor hath the eye of the hawk scanned it;
8 Les fauves altiers ne l’ont pas foulé, le lion ne l’a pas franchi.
Ravenous beasts have not made a track thereof, neither hath the lion marched thereon:
9 Le mineur porte la main sur le granit, et il remue les montagnes jusqu’à leur racine.
Upon the flint, hath he thrust forth his hand, He hath turned up mountains by the roots;
10 Il perce des galeries à travers les roches, et son œil contemple les plus rares richesses.
Among the rocks, hath he cut open streams, and, every precious thing, hath his eye seen:
11 Il aveugle les voies d’eau pour empêcher Ies infiltrations et amène au jour ce qui était caché.
From trickling, he restraineth, rivers, and, some hidden thing, is he bringing out to light.
12 Mais la Sagesse, où la trouver? Où est le siège de la Raison?
Yet where can, Wisdom, be found? And where is the place of understanding?
13 Le mortel n’en connaît pas le prix, elle est introuvable au pays des vivants.
Mortal knoweth not the way thereof, neither can it be found in the land of the living;
14 L’Abîme dit: "Elle n’est pas dans mon sein!" Et la mer dit: "Elle n’est pas chez moi!"
The resounding deep, hath said, It is not in me! And, the sea, hath said, It is not with me!
15 On ne peut l’acquérir pour de l’or de choix, on ne l’achète pas au poids de l’argent.
Pure gold cannot be given in its stead, neither can silver he weighed as the value thereof;
16 L’Or d’Ophir ne correspond pas à sa valeur, ni l’onyx précieux, ni le saphir.
It cannot be put into the scales against the gold of Ophir, with costly onyx, or sapphire;
17 Ni or ni verre ne peuvent rivaliser avec elle; aucun vase d’or fin ne paie son prix.
Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it, nor can, the exchange thereof, be a vessel of pure gold,
18 Ni corail ni cristal n’entrent en compte; la possession de la sagesse vaut mieux que les perles.
Coral or crystal, cannot be mentioned, Yea, a possession, is wisdom, above red coral;
19 La topaze d’Ethiopie ne l’égale point; on ne peut la mettre en balance avec l’or pur.
The topaz of Ethiopia cannot compare with it, Against purest gold, can it not be weighed.
20 Oui, la Sagesse d’où vient-elle? Où est le siège de la Raison?
Whence then cometh, wisdom? And where is the place of understanding?
21 Elle se dérobe aux yeux de tout vivant, elle est inconnue à l’oiseau du ciel.
Seeing it hath been hid from the eyes of every living thing, and, from the bird of the heavens, hath it been concealed?
22 L’Abîme et la mort disent: "De nos oreilles nous avons entendu parler d’elle."
Destruction and death, have said, With our ears, have we heard the report thereof!
23 C’Est Dieu qui en sait le chemin, c’est lui qui en connaît le siège.
GOD, understandeth the way thereof, and, he, discerneth the place thereof;
24 Car ses regards portent jusqu’aux confins de la terre; tout ce qui est sous les cieux, il le voit.
For, he, unto the ends of the earth, directeth his look, under all the heavens, he seeth;
25 Lorsqu’il donna au vent son équilibre et détermina la mesure des eaux,
Making, for the wind, a weight, and, the waters, he proved by measure,
26 lorsqu’il traça sa loi à la pluie et sa voie à l’éclair sonore,
When he made, for the rain, a decree, and a way for the lightning of thunders,
27 c’est alors qu’il l’a vue et appréciée à sa valeur, c’est alors qu’il en a marqué la place et pénétré le fond,
Then, saw he it, and declared it, He settled it, yea also he searched it out;
28 et il a dit à l’homme: "Ah! La crainte du Seigneur, voilà la Sagesse; éviter le mal, voilà la Raison."
And said to the son of earth, Lo! the reverence of the Lord, that, is wisdom, and, to avoid evil, is understanding.
